Is it just me or is this not the most underrated skill ever?

I have been using the following combo:

(With Party to shift agro)

1 - Traited Fade Step in to the center of the crowd smacking people for 300% weapon damage.

2- Mind Blast to generate a small amount barrier and immediately reset agro so the crowd goes after the other party members.

3 - Barrier depletes rapidly and you combo freeze the whole group from mana surge.

This is almost OP with the synergy with mana surge.

  2. Mind Blast generates a small amount of barrier and resets agro
  3. Mobs go "lol agro reset idgaf" and poke you anyway
  4. Mana Surge decides to not proc cause logic
  5. Dead keeper while everyone laughs at you for trying to create interesting builds

Jokes aside, it sounds like a fun high risk build.

Mana Surge can only be activated by an enemy hitting and breaking your barrier before depletion so the synergy is iffy at best.

I just promoted my Keeper so I'll give it a shot.

Edit: Apparently all hell breaks loose if you take tooltips at face value. I'll attribute it to patch 1.33.7 woes.

For the record I did take the passive once, never noticed anything so I assumed it worked as it said, requiring a mob to strike the barrier.

I love it for Necromancer too. But I currently do not get any Barrier with the Mind Blast Upgrade (on the PS4 version).

One strange thing I notice is the inconsistent detonating effect. Sometimes I use it on chilled enemies around me and 4 enemies get killed with one Mind Blast. Very satisfying to see that.

Other times nothing happens and I'm even standing closer than usual.

I havent really noticed mind blast ever failing to break agro provided there was somebody to shift agro to.

It is also an aoe knockback and eldritch combo finisher, i usually get good team combo rewards by spamming that skill.

throw dispel in there and you've got a nice combo going on as well

I respecced my Necromancer to use it, forgetting that the Xbone doesn't have the barrier fix yet. Big mistake. The knock back and detonation damage don't seem worth it in any way.

A good spell for close combat support keepers. With the barrier upgrade working it should be even better - I guess it can reset the barrier decay timer?

I like Mind Blast on the staff that has it (Mindchill?) but so far I haven't spent an ability point on it.

Of course the staff only has 2% chance (or whatever) so not reliable, but a nice little bonus when it goes off and I'm like, "WTF just happened?! Oh yeah, Mind Blast."

It makes a funny noise too.

I play on PC so I get the proper barrier boost from it, the heart of this combo is the Synergy with Mana Surge to AoE Freeze people.

The aoe KB and Detonator are just gravy to that.

On XB1 and been running with a Barrier/Cloak/Bubble/Mind Blast Keeper to help people do weekly challenges.  Can't wait for the fixed MB for more AoE freeze action.

So I'm not sure if it is just an XB1 thing, but Mind Blast seems like a completely useless ability to me. Ignoring the fact that the upgrade is not working, the knockback itself is more of a stagger than anything. I haven't tried it on horrors yet (they have lulsy reactions to knockbacks) but on anything that gets close to me normally it just interrupts their attack for half a second while they get pushed maybe a foot, and then they get right back to slashing at me. I took it once on my AW for extra barrier generation before I found out that it didn't work like that, and I've been completely underwhelmed by it since. I cannot speak to the combo-ability of it, I was not fortunate enough to have an opportunity to test that in the few games I had it.

It's good for breaking pots though.

Yeah, the knockback stagger does interrupt enemy archers.

I will often use fade step to get right in their grill and pop mind blast to interrupt their full draws etc.

the most important thing about mind blast is you need a friend to be a valid target for the agro shift.  if you pop that skill by yourself or when allies are too far away the mobs will just stick on you.  this is not entirely bad as it can prompt a quick barrier break and aoe freeze... PROVIDED your copy of DAI supports the proper barrier generation fix.

Sorry XBOX/PS guys :(

It says that but it activates whenever your barrier runs out, even if an enemy didn't break it. It even activates if there are no enemies around to freeze. Hell it even activates whenever someone else casts a barrier on you and it runs out.

It's one of the best keeper passives, if not the best.

I'm actually not sure where this misinformation started. It's not like it was that hard to test.

Yeah well since everything else in this game works how Bioware said it should, I can see why you'd trust that.

Mindchill is the best staff hands down if it's a naturally high DPS version (mine is 150) and when used with keepers abilities that strike multiple targets your 2% chance greatly increases

Yeah, since we all have time to test every passive and every ability in every possible scenario, we should just completely ignore the tooltips and find out exactly what they do ourselves

Mindblast could be better - the stagger duration is pretty short and doesn't really last past the casting animation, so if you're soloing you're better off with fade step or fade cloak. But in a party situation I do think it's underrated, especially since the barrier restore is working.

MInd blast (fixed version) in combination with Ice mine and Mana Surge will ensure that no melee mooks (not resistant to freeze) could touch you..... oh wait this is the MP section, but still, Mind blast with either Ice Mine or Mana surge is a potent denfensive combo.

Why not?

Surely you're not suggesting that people recommend or disparage abilities just on the tooltip, even if they've never made any actual effort to find out how they work?

Hey, I've never driven this car, but I feel qualified to to review it all the same. You don't understand, I read one article on it. I'm practically an expert.

Your argument is... hilarious and depressing. People who've never used abilities and have no idea how they work should be the ones giving advice on them simply because "ain't nobody got time for that."

Looooool. Who exactly is doing reviews here?

If you bothered to put some actual thought into your car analogy, it would go something like this...

Someone creates a thread on a car that's advertised as a two wheel drive.

BackdoorPaco: The car won't be useful for me in off road conditions, so I'll pass.

You: It says it's a two wheel drive, but it's actually a 4x4. I'm actually not sure where this misinformation started. It's not like it was that hard to test.

Me: Erm...we were told it's a 2WD.

You: Blah, blah, blah......

Pardon us for assuming it's a 2WD because the manufacturer told us so.

Its really not unreasonable to expect information given to us by the people who created the game to be correct. If someone made a car and advertised it as being automatic and then you found out its a manual, you would blame the advertiser, not the consumer.

You're telling me you don't test drive a car before buying it? That car dealerships don't actually encourage it?

In this case, you haven't even bought the car. You've read an article on it, and decided you know enough about it to endorse or disparage it. Does it anger you when people review a game that they haven't played? This is the exact same s***. People are reviewing abilities they haven't ever used.

It's not that outrageous to expect people giving advice to be somewhat knowledgeable about the advice they are giving. It took me literally 3 minutes to boot up single player and see how mana surge works. And if you haven't taken the ability ever, why the hell are you giving an opinion on it?

Your little dialogue was cute though.

You're right. And people are basically advertising abilities that they've never taken.  And I'm blaming them for doing so. Stop. Stop doing it. People are saying mana surge works one way, when they've never even taken the ability and it's obvious to anyone who has that they're wrong.

What if I told you that the grunsmann's bow isn't actually good, because on kill: Target Explodes for 75% of Weapon Damage works off of the bows weapon damage, not hit in question. Would you correct me? Would you say 'actionhero112 that's wrong, use the bow first before saying stuff like that?'

You really haven't thought this through have you?

If you're in the market for a 4x4, why on Earth would I test drive a car advertised as a 2WD? Using Penguin's analogy, if I'm in the market for a manual car, why on Earth would I be test driving a car advertised as automatic?
