Wow, I think my party members actually tried to avoid damage!

No ****, there I was, fighting the highland ravager. Everytime the glowing circles that are about to burn appeared on the ground, I paused to move each party member out of their circle. But then the unexpected occured: sometimes, my companions were already on the run out of the circle! They actually tried to avoid that damage by themselves!

I could scarcely believe my eyes, compared to how incredibly stupidly the AI behaves in this game. Granted, Bull then actually ran into Sera's circle before stopping, so it wasn't entirely succesful, but still.

Can you believe it? My dumber than dumb party trying to avoid AoE damage by themselves? No need to babysit?

I this is a recent try to improve on the AI, I applaud it.

This has been around for a while. now make it so that archers run away from melee attackers and the AI system might be too strong.

I had Solas use fade step to a bunch of melee people. I never facepalmed harder. The sad thing is he was only near an archer to begin with. But nah let's not go in the opposite direction nope. Too smart. Let's go right in the middle of three melee guys.

I ended up wiping. Stupid fight.

O dear. I hope that can still be counted as fashionably late.

You mean the "O no, I have no line of sight, better run up right next to the baddy" archers? Yes, they are accountable for far too many dents in far too many desks.

I'd say the most annoying thing about Dragon fights for me is my companions suiciding themselves into stationary fire or lightning pits anytime I leave them to their own devices for even a second.  I think my companions are sexually attracted to fire.

Soloing a dragon is easy; the real challenge to dragon fights is keeping an additional 3 mentally challenged companions alive through the whole fight.

Tell me how to contact whoever has been training your companions.  I'll pay him double whatever you're paying to work for me.

My best Solas moment was losing a fight to a Giant and a bunch of Red Templars because Solas decided to chain barrier himself while Cassandra was getting murdered.  Everything we were fighting was melee and Solas couldn't have been more out of harms way, and he cast barrier on himself 3 times in a row.  Poor Cassandra.  Needless to say Solas lost his barrier rights on anything but throaway trash-mob fights.

I might just be tired but I'm finding all of this ai funness is funny lol.

I've learned to use hold position a lot. It does the job and it works.

Varric: Well…****!

Cass: What is it? And more importantly: why can I hear you? Shouldn’t you be over there? I thought Bianca had range.

Varric: We’re out of potions. Which might be related to your other questions. I’ve kind of used up all our potions because I got hit a lot.

Inq: Andraste’s granny panties! Varric, get your sorry ass out of melee range! Right now!

Varric: I had no line of sight from that rock you told me to stand on.

Inq: And running up to the guy with the big axe was the only solution you could come up with? You’re a makerdamn writer, Varric. Think creatively! Move a step sideways!

Varric: Now that you say it, that would have been smarter. Better leave that one out when I write the book.

Cass: (sigh) It is going to be a very thin book.

I usually take Varric as my archer because once he has the ability to set a fallback point, he uses it. He also uses leaping shot quite well. All of mine do try to avoid damage, especially noticeable on the EDL dragons, they run nicely when the dragon takes flight.

Did solas have low health? Because their barrier priorities are based on % health instead of how many enemies are attacking them. At least, that's what I've noticed.

Once you hold position and then try to attack doesn't it break the hold and then it's back to the ridiculousness?

This is why you give your companions Evade and Combat Roll. They will use them to avoid anything but regular non-melee and non-ranged attacks, except maybe if it's from a heavy hitter like a bear or a dragon.

I don't think he did but I don't completely remember.  Either way, from what I've noticed the AI seems to cast barrier on whoever is taking aggro.  Every time I start a fight Solas will immediately barrier whoever takes aggro first, regardless of health.

My theory on what happened in that instance is maybe one of the melee templars was aggroing Solas, but he couldn't get around everyone else to get to Solas.  That plus the AI possibly prioritizing ranged/squishy characters for barrier when multiple characters are taking aggro could explain it.  Either way Solas received a severe beating from the inquisitor for that blunder.
