Well I don't know if people are trolling about caltrops but I do know that
you can troll people with caltrops in an excellent way!
There are so many people who become aggressive/frustrated because someone uses those "useless caltrops"
Which is why I enjoy using them all the more ![]()
I m using Caltrops alot when run away as archer at Perilous from angry mobs and charging op animals. I feel more in control than when using something like Evade.

Maybe it´s a trope from California?
Grimr~
answering my question with a question doesn't really help?
Maybe it does, or maybe it doesn't ?
Caltrops are generally considered useless, yeah. All they do is slightly slow down enemies. Even if that alone may not be entirely useless, with only four possible skills to map, I'd say it's only viable if you're soloing and REALLY mean it.
There's always a better way to avoid enemies, like Fallback Plan or Evade.
I recommend upgrading the latter to Shadow Step though, because 300% weapon damage (possibly critical too) every time an enemy hits your decoy, turns this into another combat skill if you play it right. Even if you insist on using only damage skills, you're not "wasting" a button entirely.
Does not caltrops. Would not bang or call back. 0/10

Evade works decently if you're hosting. If you're not host, though, even if everyone has a good connection, it won't help much. I think I've managed to do damage to enemies with the upgrade maybe three times ever.

Yeah, I imagine Druffalo and that ugly bear-mole-pig thing is even more frustrating on Perilous. My favorite way with them is to TTD them and not do anything, just watch how it murders the team with it's increased damage.
It's Bearmolepig! -Half Bear, half mole and half pig. I'm off- Excelsior!
They stink imo. But then again I need to L2P.

enemies always seem to ignore the decoy with shadow step and either keep pursuing me or immediately switch to someone else. I don't think I've ever seen them attack it. it might be that you have to use it at the very last second before being hit but that obviously opens you up to getting on the wrong side of lag. I rather hit evade a a little bit before than I really need to and spend the point on something else.
caltrops are so great though, despite being situational. wish I could put keep them on my hunters and such instead of being forced to drop it for the huge dps skills that work in pretty much everywhere.

fade cloaking into them feels so great, especially when you watch everyone else get knocked down.

It doesn't work any differently in the SP either, so it's either inheritly broken, or working as intended. To dodge AND get the damage part, you gotta jump at the right moment, so they will swing at the decoy - I never said it's a failsafe. But the dodge itself keeps one alive long enough to justify the investment imo. I'd feel terribly immobile without it.
