Let's look at what Caltrops actually does:

 

Duration: 30 Seconds
Radius: 3 Meters
Damage: 10% Weapon Damage per Second
Speed Reduction: 25%

 

The upgrade (Tread Lightly) increases the Radius to 5 meters and Speed Reduction to 50%.

 

So a decent sized AOE that slows enemies by half, lasts a long time (30 seconds)... but only does 10% Weapon Damage per Second. If the enemy were to stand in the Caltrops for the full 30 seconds, and if the damage over time (DOT) actually processed every second [see below] that would be 300% Weapon Damage (10% / sec * 30 sec).

 

However, there is also some evidence that abilities that are supposed to do damage over time (DOT) like Caltrops do not actually deal their damage every second, but rather every tick, which is 2 (?) seconds.

 

Also enemies are not going to stand in the Caltrops for the full 30 seconds.

 

So instead of 300% Weapon Damage, we're looking at maybe 150% Weapon Damage, best case if the enemy spends the full 30 seconds in the Caltrops. Realistically probably much less than that. Probably 50%-100% Weapon Damage at best.

 

Now the Archer has a variety of great damage dealing powers, so maybe you don't NEED a 4th and you can take Caltrops for the Slowing effect.

 

Bottom line, if you like Caltrops for its slowing effect, take it. Don't take it for the damage.

I kind of like that caltrops just fall down at your feet like a cow taking a crap. Such an uninspired animation, suits the move well.

I use Caltrops and I like them just fine. I always use them in chokepoints, and to slow down melee attackers charging at me. With Strafing Shots (moving backwards) and Leaping Shots it becomes much easier to keep distance from melee enemies.

They have utility but lack damage. They're fine for helping to keep enemies at bay. But to be frank, if alot of enemies are getting close enough to warrant using them you're probably already dead or doing something seriously wrong with your positioning anyway.

You can troll way better by standing next to a guy when you've pulled the DC's aggro.


Just for that, I'm running a Mage with fade step and pulling Agro until glyph appears near teammates feet in a pug until all are dead and then finish it solo

this is me when I am in full AW jerkbag one-man army mode.

aggro dc > stand next to dummies you've been carrying all match>fade cloak when cloud appears>walk away laughing.

How to use caltrops

1. Stand on statue

2. Throw caltrops on DCs head

3. DC gets butthurt and goes away crying

4. Shoot DC in back as he is killing all the pugs

I think the point is that there are better skills and caltrops never saved me once
