I know the bulk of Mass Effect 2 takes place over 2 years after the first game, but when does the incident that starts the game take place?

I just find it interesting that the game says that Shepard has been missing for 2 years, and also that the battle on the Citidel was two years ago. That would imply the scene at the beginning of Mass Effect 2 took place literally immediately after Mass Effect 1, but that doesn't really make sense.

If you check the Codex, it tells you the Normandy was destroyed a few weeks after Sovereign was killed.

Is that the incident you mean?

2 months after the end of ME1 is when the intro is supposed to happen. Then Shepard spends 2 years being rebuilt.
