Kate Mulgrew only had a few lines in DA:2 and DA:I maybe she wanted to be done with it. That, to me, would explain what happened more than 'what happened' . I couldn't see anyone excepting a different person to voice her. Just like Claudia Black being Morrigan. That is beyond the control of the company. Either that or she isn't dead and will join the hero to go after that Bald Son of a Goat. (I romanced him and he didn't even say goodbye) That's almost as bad as a text msg breakup.

She's Red in Orange Is the New Black and she's captain Janeway in Star Trek Voyager.

How hard is it to be a VA? I don't think it's as demanding as acting in a tv series but then I'm just guessing. I'm also thinking that Flemeth has been deliberately kept low key, there could be more about her further down the line.

she will be missed in DA if what we've seen is... final. as well as the character she brought to life with her amazing voice. Flemeth is one of the most interesting creations i've seen in games, neutral (to a point she seems insane) and powerful, i don't think anyone can replace her. as much as i like Solas, he's not even close

Although I like Kate Mulgrew as an actress and Felemeth is one of my favourtie charcters, I admit that, the first time I heard her, all I could think was "Hey that's Janeway".  I've managed to put that out of my mind now (somewhat) but every once in a while it comes creeping back in.  It does break the immersion for me sometimes, that's the danger of using someone with a very distinct voice as a VA.  That being said, I hope this isn't the end for Flemeth, but my gut says it is.

On another thought, if Flemeth didn't have another part of her physical self in existence, then yeah, that's the end of her.  :(  But if her essence still exists somewhere, they could bring her back except that it would be in a different body, different voice. I'm actually all for Morrigan to inherit Flemeth's armor and feathers.  :P

The big roles like the protagonist and companions can be pretty demanding, I think. A different challenge to most acting roles, because you need to perform reading out your lines in a booth for hours on end, rather than having other actors to play off.

But a "cameo" like Flemeth would be relatively easy I think, and unlike a TV role can probably more or less fit in around the actor's schedule.

OITNB is a success, perhaps she wanted more dosh and BW/EA wasn't willing.

I don't think it will end/die because of this. DAI had such a huge cliffhanger that I already want the next game and this one just came out.  I think the franchise is moving and the first 2 games (and even this one) were a set up for what comes next.  I think now it will move to a cohesive narrative, like in the ME games, that goes through the next 2 or 3 games.

Maybe it's the actor, sure, but if this is where the writers intended to go with the story by the end of DAI then it's a bit silly to suggest the only reason Flemeth became a statue is because her actor wanted more money or is too busy.

Yeah? I can't say I ever considered her to be that important. Without the ending-cutscene I would not have missed her the slightest in DAI, and I also considered her appeareance in DA2 mostly uninteresting to Hawkes story...

The only thing Dragon Age can't do without is Thedas ...

It's interesting how her lack of lines in DAI is taken as an indicator that Kate is moving on, but almost the same amount of lines in DA2 DIDN'T make people think that. Did she say something?

I don't know a lot about the voice acting industry, but everything I *do* know points at VAs not having control over where their characters are going... leaving, staying, or otherwise. Unless she's said something, I wouldn't get caught up in worrying that she's leaving the franchise or, worst yet, this could be the end of Dragon Age as we know it or whatnot. Both would be horrible!

Chin up, friends! We're probably just fine.

Maybe Kate Mulgrew wasn't available for a larger role such as they were contemplating in DA4? Or would simply have cost too much.

It definitely seems like they're going somewhere with this plot, and a major role is quite a different commitment from a quick cameo.

edit: I don't think it's her lack of lines that make people think she's gone, but her dying. Admittedly not totally conclusive for Flemeth, but the circumstances make it look like it'll stick. Or at least, if Mythal returns it seems like it'd be in a new body, which would make a new voice actor expected.

I really hope she comes back. Growing up watching ST voyager it was awesome to hear her as morrigan's mother and then latter, lost elven god and tuvok as the elven keeper in DAO.

The thing about VA isn't that its hard for her. Its going to the location/studio that would be the problem. Think of how often you order a pizza because you don't want to cook or go out and get something. She can't be paid that much for just a few lines. To be honest I thought she was going to be the antagonist in DA 3 but we got Corypheus instead. Not that I mind I think he is a good bad guy. David Sterne makes him great. But DA 2 made me think it was going to be Flemeth.

If they are going to make a story about what happened I hope it is an expansion and not just a DLC.

Kate Mulgrew = One of the most distinctive voices in Hollywood.  Some find it grating, but I think it is cool.

I remember thinking, "WTF?" when Star Trek: Voyager launched years ago.  A female captain of a Federation Starship??  I was raised on Captain James T. Kirk and Captain Jean-Luc Picard, for crying out loud!  How can this... this... WOMAN ever measure up to those two cultural icons??

I don't know if Captain Katherine Janeway ever achieved the status of Captains Kirk and Picard, but I grew to really enjoy Ms. Mulgrew's portrayal of her, and, as a former military member, I can honestly say that I would have been honored to have served under Captain Janeway!

I do expect more from her, or at least something in the future. Even though her role as Flemeth was small aside from saving the Warden and Hawke which spawned DAO and DA2, she will be missed. Her voice is awesome for the role. Combined with her mysterious intentions, it was nice. It would be a shame not to expand her role somehow.. Killing her off would be a waste.. Too bad the mark was not because of Flemeth, I'd be proud to VA a character that "made" three games possible. Lol

Yeah, this is how I see it as well. Flemeth in that form is likely gone, but I definitely feel the character will live on in some state. My guess is most likely through Morrigan because she definitely sent something into that eluvian at the end, and they wouldn't have shown her doing that if it wasn't an important action that's going to pop up again later. That said, I really like Solas, but I also like Flemeth, so I'd like both of them to reappear in the future.

Doubtful. Voice acting work isn't like television where it's so demanding.

And Flemeth is hardly done...it's weird that people think that a character who has a history of jumping bodies and cheating death is gone for good.

Yeah, that's why I was asking if everyone was assuming that Kate was gone because of something SHE said. We know Flemeth can jump from body to body. There are assumptions here that her voice would change if it did, though... no reason to assume that. We don't know that Flemeth from DAO and Flemeth from DA2 weren't two different bodies.

I think sometimes we have to be careful with broad assumptions; our worry can become the unnecessary panic-driving rumor in two seconds flat.

That said, I really do hope we get more Flemeth. She's a favorite character of mine. And she's crafty as anything, so I've got faith! :)

How hard is it to be a VA? I don't think it's as demanding as acting in a tv series but then I'm just guessing.

Contrary to tv, your physical appearance won't matter at all.  You could be old and play a young girl, or the opposite.  You could be ugly and play the most beautiful women of the earth in a game, or you could really be a top model and play an ugly witch.  So, obviously, that part is easier for the actors&actresses.

Then, there's absolutely no makeup.  So no one sits on a chair for 6hrs before shooting for 20 minutes.  That is also easier.

When it comes to performance though, it's got to be harder becauseyou only have your voice to carry your emotions.  You can't rely on your body expression, you can't rely on your eyes, you can't rely on any makeup/special effect to carry the tension of the moment, it's all in your voice.  So no, I don't think it's easier than acting in a tv series.  But it probably pays less too, wich is why lesser known actors&actresses usually tend to do voice work on animes&video games.  Why do it when you can earn 20M$ for a single movie?

Captain Janeway. Also Flemeth. But they are basically the same character.

And for the record I thought Janeway was a fantastic captain. Actually Voyager was the very first Star Trek series I ever watched, so unlike many other people who were introduced to Star Trek through TNE or ToS, it was Voyager that set the bar for me.
