Never saw Merrill's mirror in any of my playthroughs.
Can you provide a picture? It would be much appreciated.

And is there confirmation that it is, in fact, Merrill's mirror, and not just a mirror that looks the same (because BioWare never reuses art)?
Because Merrill's goal was to stop the decline of the Elvhen. I don't deny that the Eluvians could be useful to others; Gaspard noted how useful the Eluvians could have been for the Orlesian Empire.
Well, not quite. Marethari says Merrill knows the same healing magic. But that minor bit aside yes, as I've maintained there's a definite link between Dalish magic and the Taint if one was able to suppress the latter for three days in a living person, and when amplified with the power of blood cleanse a tainted fragment of an Eluvian.
Which jives well with Solas' comments on the Elves immortality. It wasn't a result of their magic, but rather due to it. Or something along those lines. Can't remember. Have a migraine now. Going to sleep now.
I don't think it makes her unsuitable. As Dalish she sees them differently than human mages. She's also well aware of risks and takes pre-cautions, trying to only risk her own life to do something that is important for her. In any point I don't think she was too naive when trying to restrore elven history.

It's not there if Merrill destroys her eluvian in the keep. It's easy to miss.
Looks like it needs a little Windex.
Wasn't Merrill literally a blood mage under the influence of a demon manipulating her into constructing the Eluvian in order to release it from an ancient prison? The character flaws she had in DA2 (if not pride, then at least dangerous curiosity and stubbornness) weren't exactly subtle.
It's not about thinking about them differently. She gets they're dangerous. She just can't understand the danger. Like with the Pride demon who she plays with - she has blinders on and thinks the only threat is getting possessed. She doesn't think that it could exploit her choices and prey on Marethari. She also doesn't think Marethari might just refuse to play along with her plan to martyr herself by leaving the clan.
And she wants a Hawke who she may well be in love with to execute her if she gets possessed.
She doesn't get emotions and society.
She's dedicated her life on something that she thinks is worthy: getting back dalish lost history. I think she understand danger, Marethari getting possessed was Marethari's own choice that she did cause she didn't understand Merrill either. Merrill is willing to risk her life in the thing that's her lifes work and that she thinks it's worth for. She wants Hawke to be there if something goes wrong cause she/he is capable of do what's needed if something goes wrong. That's needed precaution.
Wow... thanks for the pictures. I never noticed it in my gameplay. Now if they really drop this plot thread it would be a damn shame. :S
No. Audacity didn't want to use the Eluvian to escape. That was just the smokescreen. It wanted to exploit the tension between Marethari and Merrill and see if one of them was stupid enough to let it ride inside of them. It turned out Marethari gripped the idiot ball tighter.
I think Merrill was always Audacity's target. Marethari just jumped on the grenade. It's Merrill that commits the 'sin' of pride.

Solas gave one of his foci to Corypheus, one of the ancient Magisters of Tevinter turned into a Darkspawn. If that's not an idiotic thing to do I dunno what is.
It was a colossal blunder to be sure, but there is no question that Solas is much more intelligent than Merrill. Merrill comes across as the Forrest Gump of Thedas in conversation.
I think what the game is lacking is less a pro-demon viewpoint and more a pro-blood-magic viewpoint.

Thanks a bunch for the pics.

Depending on how things have shaken up regarding the Eluvians, I might very well change my Keep decision and have Merrill smash it. It's a little alarming to me that there is an actual representation of that particular mirror in the Crossroads, meaning it could very well end badly. I don't think that an open doorway into the Crossroads is a good thing at all.
I give Morrigan a pass on her mirror, cause she seems to at least have some idea of what she's doing.

it might not work since the mirrors in the Crossroads include ones that are inert, broken, damaged, or sealed
Uh it was in my playthrough and Merrill was a corpse.
Maybe it just randomly appears.
Did Merrill smash the mirror before you corpsified her?

True, but Laidlaw said after DA2 that letting Merrill fix the mirror was perhaps not a good idea. I might do just have her smash it, just to be safe.

If I remember right, the scene where Merrill breaks the mirror also locks her into following Hawke no matter what, and not killable.
