Oh great. Another thread where everything is Merrill's fault even though she didn't actually do anything and not because Marethari was the one stupid enough to release the demon and the clan was stupid enough to blame Merrill for that and everything else.

Yup. That sums it up pretty nicely...

I can't decide if I love Merrill more than I hate threads about her.  Curious.

Anyway, she's really not as pro-demon as you think. I mean, she's not stupid enough to release a demon perfectly sealed in a prison for eons, unlike a certain other Keeper.....

No, she's stupid enough to expect me to trust every demon we come across. And saying Merrill is stupid isn't hate or blaming her for anything. It's an observation, one I think is more accurate than anything since.

Hate= hold a contrary opinion to mine about a person, place, or thing.

Well she does seem a little stupid in some areas but does she actually DO anything really stupid?

Merrill isn't pro-demon whatsoever. In fact, because of her Dalish tutelage she universal finds all denizens of the Fade to be dangerous creatures that need to be treated with a measure of caution. The same thing goes for Morrigan.

Solas is possibly the only mage, or even person, in the Dragon Age universe that regularly talks to demons on an equal footing with little fear, and that's most likely because he's not even mortal and thus probably can't even be possessed.

She did encourage Hawke to do the ritual for Dumat, invoking sorcery she had no idea of what it would do out of basically curiosity.

o.o sure do the ancient blood ritual at a magical Tevinter altar that can't possibly go wrong.

Merrill does deal with culture shock in a human city, and as "The Stolen Throne" explicitly mentions, the Dalish speak the Common Tongue as a second language; elvish is their first, and the one they use to speak with one another.

Which is no excuse for her actions beforehand.

It's all a downward snowball.

In Origins we had Morrigan. In DA2 we had Merrill. In Inquisition everyone hates demons. Always gonna garner disapproval if you do stuff like make a deal with Imshael. Anyone else think there should be a pro-demon-loving companion?

...........Did you just compare Morrigan to Merrill?!

Intelligent? Merrill?

What

Lulz. I don't think I remember Merrill doing a single intelligent thing.

She's intelligent but just not clever, two different things. I think she has lot of scholarly intelligence but like mad scientist or something is bit "dumb" at times.

She doesn't have scholarly intelligence. And Intelligence has nothing to do with knowledge. Those are two different things. Not what you said.

In DnD terms; She has high Intelligence but really low Wisdom.

Seriously though after more then ten years working on that eluvian she manages to accomplish...

Nothing.

The mirror remains inert no matter what and in exchange Merrill gets her mentor killed and her entire clan to permanently reject her. I like Merrill for her voice actress and her awkward humor but her goals leave me cold. Then again, I blame that more on Dragon Age 2's overall writing then anything else. Besides Varric everyone of the companions made me want to bang my head against the wall.

What she lacks is common sense. Well I don't know what definition of intelligence of you use but intelligence to me is having knowledge and using it pretty much. She does have lot of elven knowledge and also is intelligent enough to know how to use it to restore eluvian etc. To me she's really intelligent but lacks people skills and common sense, and when excited can be careless.

She does try to kill all her friends after accepting the Pride demon's offer in the Fade. That was pretty stupid, especially in light of how she supposedly took every precaution in dealing with demons. I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt until then. I still think her views were interesting, and the knowledge she was seeking was worth it, but in the end I felt like she was the wrong person to be messing around with such potentially dangerous things. I do like her character, and even agree with the idea that blood magic can be a useful tool, but I also think she's far too stubborn and irresponsible to be using it herself.

It's incredibly ridiculous. Merrill can ascertain the nature of the Profane Abomination and Torpor, can determine if Keran is possessed, and is constructing an Eluvian based on lore she gathered and information she extrapolated from the shard, but because Merrill - a Dalish elf speaking a second language - has culture shock about a foreign culture, some people simply belittle her.

If your city was stolen, why didn't you just call the guards?

Yup, it is unfortunate. She simply lacks social experience and has trouble fitting in. She's stubborn about her beliefs, but that's not a result of ignorance. She cares deeply about her people and the Elves' history. Her clan could have handled the whole situation better. Besides, Merrill was hardly oblivious to the possibility of danger when interacting with the demon: she simply chose to risk it for her purpose. She's an idealist, and that's rare and admirable.

So what if she's a bit naive? Merrill hate sucks >.<

Everyone but Anders is railroaded into trying to kill Hawke in the Fade after a few seconds of dialogue.

I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt until then.

You must have a low opinion of every companion who attacks Hawke, too.

I still think her views were interesting, and the knowledge she was seeking was worth it, but in the end I felt like she was the wrong person to be messing around with such potentially dangerous things. I respectfully disagree. I don't think the railroading in "Night Terrors" is sufficient enough to condemn all of the companions who attacked Hawke because the Plot Dictates.

That's as silly as using examples of Merrill's dry humor and being ignorant enough to think that she's being serious.
