What she lacks is common sense. Well I don't know what definition of intelligence of you use but intelligence to me is having knowledge and using it pretty much. She does have lot of elven knowledge and also is intelligent enough to know how to use it to restore eluvian etc. To me she's really intelligent but lacks people skills and common sense, and when excited can be careless.
Incredible -- my first post in the story boards since the DA2 days, and there's an active thread full of Merrill-debating. It's like I never left. But there are more defenders this time, which is gratifying.
At any rate, I'll make two observations: first, she knowingly and willingly accepts the deal in the Fade and even apologizes to Hawke about it because she judges the potential benefit to her people as more important and second, she's not the one who gets possessed, her worrisome (and less knowledgeable) Keeper was.

i love merill, some may say shes stupid or unintelligent but that passion and belief makes me like her even more, and like anyone she can learn from her mistakes. She is just adorable and pure until some shitheads come and kick her like a puppy. Damn you haters! Leave merrill alone!
And you keep ignoring Merrill's faults and simply can't deal that she isn't as perfect as you believe her to be.
She was supposed to one day become Keeper of her clan. Someone who can't function properly in a society dominated by humans isn't really fit to be a Keeper. Just because you know old stuff doesn't make you one. Unless you're one of those elves who's first reaction to meeting an outsider is filling them with arrows.
Only you find Merrill funny.
Her intellect?
"Dude, the docks are on fire."
"No they're not. Oh, that was a trick, right?"
Someone that daft is meant to one day get possessed.

I've never claimed Merrill was perfect, but the condemnation of her by people like you is beyond ridiculous.

Because Merrill is adjusting to a foreign culture of humans, that means she would be bad as a Keeper of Dalish elves? That line of thinking doesn't make any sense. You also seem to forget that Merrill is actually serving as a de facto 'Keeper' of the Andrastian elves who were left homeless because of the Mage-Templar War.
Only you find Merrill funny.
I pointed out that Merrill uses dry humor; that's all. Like in her exchange with Anders:
Anders: Do the Dalish ever have fancy parties? I always imagined they celebrated most big occasions by eating mushrooms and acorns. And maybe dancing naked around a campfire.
Merrill: You know, I was wondering when the naked dancing was going to start. And the human sacrifice. I mean, you just can't throw a decent party without kidnapping a human child and offering her entrails to the sky gods.
Anders: Really?
Merrill: No.
Her intellect?

It's almost like the Common Tongue is a second language for her, as "The Stolen Throne" mentions the Dalish speak elvish with one another, and only use the Common Tongue to speak with non-Dalish. ![]()
But I was thinking more along the lines of building a piece of two-thousand year old elven technology that baffled even the Magisters of the Imperium; the Eluvian she constructed that only shows up in the Crossroads if Merrill didn't destroy her elven mirror. Merrill grappling with the human language pales in comparison to the intellect she demonstrates time and again.

If its this Merrill then I approve

Yes, because that is exactly what the Dalish do: integrate into human society and learn how to live in their metropoleis.
Oh wait.
Honestly I think someone with extensive knowledge of the Dalish like Merrill was needed in the game especially during the Mythal quest. Morrigan was out of her depth there and It would be fitting if Merrill found out the truth about her people.

You mean besides the incognito elven god?
The most intelligent thing Merrill ever did was finally smashing the mirror. Something everyone else in the party could have told her to do long ago.
Even Mr. pro-mage Anders was calling her daft for her obsession with the mirror and blood mage. One of the few times I really welcomed his rants.
And I am someone who loved Merrill. She was my LI and I found her mostly adorable but someone who needed a lot of guidance.

I think Merrill could have fit in the storyline. Rather than having the quests in the Dales focus almost exclusively on humans, it could have featured Merrill and the elves she was taking care of - since humans were supposed to be fleeing en mass because of the civil war, and the region is predominantly elven. Given her expertise in studying the lore behind the Eluvians, she could have interacted with Briala and her elven network.
For Inquisitor Lavellan, she could have served as a confidant and a friend. She would have provided a pro-Dalish point of view - in contrast to the anti-Dalish views held by Minaeve, Vivienne, and the merc Dalish.
You mean besides the incognito elven god?
Wait what? I'm not finished with the game yet. Though I'm almost done.
The most intelligent thing Merrill ever did was finally smashing the mirror. Something everyone else in the party could have told her to do long ago.
Considering that everyone else knows next to nothing about Dalish culture and the plight of the People, I'm not certain why their word would be more important than Merrill's informed view, given that she knows the hardships the Dalish face, and has actually studied the lore about the Eluvian, as well as gathered additional information directly from the shard she cleansed.
Even Mr. pro-mage Anders was calling her daft for her obsession with the mirror and blood mage. One of the few times I really welcomed his rants.
Anders was focused on the mage rebellion and the autonomy of the Circles from Chantry control, so I don't see where he has any room to criticize Merrill's efforts to help her people. Anders also had a problem with her having her own religious and cultural views, and kept arguing that she should adopt an Andrastian view. He was hardly impartial.
And I am someone who loved Merrill. She was my LI and I found her mostly adorable but someone who needed a lot of guidance.
I don't think Merrill needed 'guidance' from someone who was ignorant about her culture and the Eluvians.
Wait what? I'm not finished with the game yet. Though I'm almost done.
You should finish the game then. I highly recommend waiting through the credits, in fact.
I don't think Merrill needed 'guidance' from someone who was ignorant about her culture and the Eluvians.
Even when Merrill ignores the first and knows next to nothing about the latter? Okay. Just let her run wild then.
Honestly I think someone with extensive knowledge of the Dalish like Merrill was needed in the game especially during the Mythal quest. Morrigan was out of her depth there and It would be fitting if Merrill found out the truth about her people.
Morrigan is vastly more qualified to be the caretaker of that knowledge
Only because Morrigan took the time out to research what eluvians are (something Merrill tried to do, and gets hate for doing).
It's almost like the Common Tongue is a second language for her, as "The Stolen Throne" mentions the Dalish speak elvish with one another, and only use the Common Tongue to speak with non-Dalish.
Well is she clever enough to use dry humor and sarcasm in her second language, or is she not familiar enough with it to understand double meanings?
What the hell has happened to this thread? Don't be mistaken, I find it awesome, but where the hell did all of this come from? XD
There are a group of dedicated elf haters who flock to every elven thread on the board and circle around it throwing out pithy hate bombs. The chuckleheads. You'll get used to them.
Only because Morrigan took the time out to research what eluvians are (something Merrill tried to do, and gets hate for doing).
Morrigan also has been educated, both by Flemeth and herself, in the oldest magical lore and is capable of manipulating even the magic surrounding an Old God.
Merrill doesn't really stack up to that
