I think they call it brown nosing and I wonder why is there no mention of it it on any tropes sites under this term. Especially Bioware games with their approval mechanics are like staple example of it.

In RL I never do that since I hate it even more than jRPGs  :P. But telling people the truth straight in the face won't make you popular. I guess people would rather listen to sweet lies than a harsh truth ... oh well

If I had to pick any rolemodel for social interactions from a BioWare game, then it would be sarcastic Hawke. I could stand being more funny.

Snarky Shepard is so much better. Aria? Totally awesome.

This thread makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, much in the same way a swig of Ketel One does.

To the person who asked me how it works...

It's hard to explain. But basically, somebody will unload their personal issues onto me (in typical BioWare game fashion) and a list of potential responses pop into my head simultaneously.

Now, depending on how I feel about said person, I will respond accordingly.

The worst part?

Having the hots for somebody and not knowing what to say. Literally, a million possible responses pop into my head and I have no idea what to say, so all that comes out is something really short, bland and stupid. Followed by an involuntary nervous laugh which makes me want to die inside because I don't seem to have any control over it!

In this instance, I wish it was like in BW games where you choose between the very least, three responses that sound good. (Most of the time, no way I'd use the pickup lines available to me when trying to pull the moves on Sera. How embarrassing.)

Shepard isn't that snarky outside of ME1.

I'd settle for ME1 Shepard's bank account. The things I could do with 9 million credits.

I'd even give up the bank account if sometimes I could get away with some of Shep's paragon interrupts.

I mean... what? I never said that... I would never...

Oh, but life does have an approval meter...

I mean, this is how you make friends and enemies. If they hate what you do, they "disapprove" and you make enemies. If they like it, you get "approval" and make a friend... possibly laid, if sexual attraction plays into it.

The difference is...

In real life, people can still respect and tolerate you regardless of any decision you make, depending on their personality. When it comes to Inquisition... not so much. Although I found Cassandra to be pretty open minded and tolerant.

I too ask billions of investigate questions on the spot and force other people to answer them no matter how rude or personal they are.

That's actually very sad. Didn't you have any social contacts prior to playing Dragon Age? Are you a hermit?

It's not that I had bad social skills before, but I noticed that sometimes I can be a bit insensative in my responses. If my usual remarks or responses were in dragonage I would probably get a lot of dissaprovals, and where does that really get me?  There is no benefit for me in responding to people in such a way that they will ultimately get defensive or think negative of me.   I have more to gain in the long run if more people approved of their interaction with me.

Now when I talk to someone at work or wherever, I think of what I can say to them that will gain approval. Try it, you will be surprised of how much it works.

Thank you Bioware for teaching me great socializing techniques!

That kind of search for approval builds up expectations over time. Expectations on things that you at the end might not be able to deliver. I would be quite careful going down that road.   ;)

It's better than missing out on a job promotion or other social opportunity.  I see windows of opportunity open up all the time for the politically correct, and kiss ups. It's time to put my pride and ego aside and be more strategic in my approach to social interactions.  It's just like a video game if you build up the approval, then certain abilities and perks are unlocked for you.

Whenever you don't know what to say, just go for the investigate option. Or the more neutral, "well, what do yooouuuu think about it?" option.

*warning: you cannot reload and try again if you frack it up.

Asking what someone thinks about something always works. It gives them the opportunity to be heard on a subject, and the illusion that you give a crap what they think, which wins you more brownie points. Then as they are yapping, it gives you more time to figure them out and what to say next.  Females in particular love to be asked what they think.

It won't work for me. I would freeze for a seconds analyzing the best reponse and what consequences it could/would have until finally choosing an answer.

Plus everyone can speak what others wanna hear any time. You do that all the time to make someone feel better with themselves.
