To some extent, it's important to remember that math is surprisingly flexible.

For example, a year after Titanic came out, it was touted as the movie that had made the most money in all of history.

The catch was, that if you accounted for inflation, it didn't even make the top 10. In fact, the number one money-making movie at that time, accounting for inflation? Gone With the Wind... a movie that had been made 70 years earlier!

Just food for thought.

"An EA representative told GameSpot that the "most successful launch" milestone is "based on units sold"

It's a good idea to read an article before commenting on it.

One thing that's bothered me is the assumption that the number of dragons killed and hours played mean anything about the games success. It might be because I am Let's Playing DAI, but I'm roughly 40 ish hours into the game and have yet to kill a single dragon (just finished the Grey Warden stuff and haven't gone to Orlais yet). However, if that Gamespot article is correct and the 'most successful launch' moniker is based on units sold, then we have literally nothing to worry about. Bioware doesn't seem to be slowing down at all, at least from what I could see when I talked to some of the devs at PAX South.

I guess they use the origin to count the playing hours. But it happened many times that I played without logging in my account due to my poor internet. So the number 113m could be an underestimate.

It's not clear that you need to log in for Origin to collect data about your usage. DAO apparently collected data unless you explicitly opted out, even if you never logged in, and there's nothing in the EULAs that says EA won't do this. I suppose this could be checked by setting Origin offline and seeing if the program still calls home.

I've never seen Valve release sales figures for any of it's games  (most I could find are from 2008 and even then they are estimates) so by your logic they are not really preforming as expected either.

No that's all your own logic there. Comparing two different companies, one who has never released sale figures and is under zero obligation to release any sort of financial information.

That works backward for games because they've actually gotten progressively cheaper. Each unit sold of a VG today is actually cheaper. So I assume they're using unit #s.

I don't know if they've gotten cheaper on the sticker, but price inflation hasn't been a huge factor in the cost of playing games. Relative to inflation the real cost has probably gone down though, so in that sense they are cheaper.

If DAI is now BioWares "most succesful launch title" then do we know what was the previous one and on that note does anyone have any sales numbers for previous BioWare games?

"Best launch ever" could mean very good day one sales (including preorders) or something completely else. We don't know because EA didn't disclose what that means. That said, sales could have plummeted after launch or many people got refunds. I preordered DA:I and got a refund after playing it for 10 hours, because I couldn't stand what is in my opinion absolutely abysmal gameplay.

Truth is, when you have a slam dunk you don't pussyfoot around. You shout it out as loud as you can so investors buy your stock, stock increases, and your bonuses go up. I didn't see any of that in this earnings report regarding DA:I, it felt more like damage control TBH.
If I had to guess I would say that EA is refusing to release sales numbers because they aren't very good, which would reflect upon the lackluster chart data in North America and Europe. Bad news like that would spread like wildfire through the internet hurting sales even further.

Anyway, as long as EA doesn't release any sales numbers we will not know how well the game truly sold or not for quite a while. I guess we just have to wait and see if heads start to roll at Bioware Edmonton or not.

I think it was Mass Effect 3. I'm not positive on that, though.

Yep, Mass Effect 3 was Bioware's most succesful launch title.

But sales plummeted after the word got out that the game isn't any good.

Congrats Bioware, and EA.

Long may it continue and let's hope there's much more DA to come!

Very well deserved.

Also:

This thread is so much nicer now that I have loads of people on ignore. :D

That record is really broken, huh?

On topic: Good news, hoping to see some good singleplayer dlc in the future for this game!

Or because sales plummet after 1.5 million people already bought it the previous year. Kinda tends to happen a lot with games.

I remember when people said that there was no way ME3 would get a year of single player and multiplayer DLC support because the game was supposedly such a flop.

Yep. ME3 sold about 1.2 million copies in its first month according to NPD, no info on how much it sold during launch though.

Of course that was just for the USA, and PC sales not counted.

According to this article on Joystiq, ME3 sold 890k in North America on launch day alone, and shipped 3.5 million copies worldwide in its first week.

They plummeted at about the same rate as ME2's sales plummeted. ME2 wasn't any good confirmed.

On this line of conversation, do we know which Bioware game has the most in lifetime sales?

Yep, only for NA. I forgot to add that.

Anyway, shipped does not equate to sales.

I would imagine it's Origins or Mass Effect 2. No more than guesswork, however.

Ordinarily I wouldn't take this seriously, but I suppose you're an expert on this topic.
