When i mean roleplay, I mean play a different role. Not yourself in the inquistor's shoes, so with different morals and different choices.

For example, My first playthrough he was an selfish human noble who just exploited his mark and "blessing" for his own gain trying to get as rich as possible and every judgement was for personal gain (sided with ishmael for virgins for example)

My current playthrough is an elf/mage fanatic, who truely believes he is blessed by the maker and believes every decision he makes is from andraste's will, smiting foes down and purging all evil without really putting much thought into it. (even kicked out sera for being unworthy)

I'd like to hear what kind of characters you play as your inquistor! I know the majority just play themselves and do nice/logical decisions, but hey! being roleplay or creating a fictional protaganist is fun for some of us, so I'd like to hear your creations :)

I rarely play as myself in RPGs.

Uhh.. I always roleplay. The game does not allow me to insert myself, to make choices that I would personally agree with, or to have reasonable in my opinion goals.

Me. Self-inserts bore me. And with the different protagonist every game formula Dragon Age uses, I'd be playing the exact same character every single game. Would be awfully dull, IMO.

So far, across the series, I've had a steely, hotheaded female Dalish rogue with a heart of gold somewhere, a snarky, borderline-sociopathic male mage Hawke who laughed at all his problems rather than take them seriously, and a logical weirdo female elf mage who's probably the only one of the bunch with a moral compass that functions all the time. My Warden had a tendency to get really angry and stab people, and my Hawke...lol.

Trying to differentiate my protagonists across the games has actually been one of my favourite things about the series so far. I'd like to see them all share a drink. :S

I suppose I'm boring in this regard because I never play straight up dubious characters. I can't say I play characters that are too much like me, though. I'm a nice enough person and generous whenever possible. But I wouldn't be schlepping across the continent to bring back two elfroot for some random to make healing toothpaste or what have you. And in particularly nasty judgements I'd take a lot more heads.

I like to RP as the honorable leader that seems ideal but probably wouldn't be---someone a bit like that* big dummy Ned Stark. While personally I would be a bit more hardline and petty with those who wronged me/others. My Inquisitor isn't a softy, but is still turning out to be a bit more forgiving and trusting than I would have liked.

That said, after getting burned a few times I think that's going to change. My fingers are crossed for an expansion for me to have fun with my jaded/hardened inquisitor.

Always. If I was roleplaying myself, I would have to die at the first battle so to not break immersion.

Meh, not really no.. I was able to do so in DA2 but inquisition: no matter what I do, it's always a goodie two-shoes. Give me the DAO or DA2 system anyday..

I enjoy roleplaying as different characters in all the RPG games I play; in Fallout, it was fun to play as contrasting characters, as a Christian Lone Wanderer who turns the other cheek and an atheist Courier (of New Khan origin) who seeks vengeance upon those who wronged him (but has a soft spot for his Great Khan counterparts).

In Dragon Age, I played as an atheist Surana Warden who simply didn't believe in any gods or in a higher power, and recognized the severe threat posed by the darkspawn, causing him to encourage Avernus' research and spare the Anvil of the Void (as the golems beat back the first Archdemon, Dumat, and lead to a century of peace for the dwarves from the darkspawn threat). He also embraced his freedom from the Circle of Ferelden, and saw no reason to return. Despite falling in love with Morrigan and wanting to find her right after she disappeared, he dedicated himself after the Fifth Blight to rebuilding the order in Ferelden.

My elven Inquisitor believed in the Creators and cared about the Elvhen. The Inquisition was simply a means to an end for him; he longed to return to his clan and reunite with his family. Revas tried to adhere to the Vir Atish'an, the Way of Peace, as much as he could, despite being forced into a combative role because of the crisis with the Breach. He felt like a perpetual outsider among the Andrastians, and only found solace in the few friendships he forged with his companions, like Solas.

I feel exactly the same. I always roleplay. It wouldn't work for me if I'd play as myself because of the choices I have to make. Frankly, I would probably flee as soon as the first demon shows up so it doesn't make any sense to have a character that is based on myself ;). My characters are better and braver and the fun part is to act upon it through the roleplaying.

Edited to add:

My first Inquisitor was a very pragmatic human female mage. She didn't believe she was chosen, she said so many times to her companions and advisors and yet she decided the play this part to give people hope. Because sticking together was important and if it helped that people saw her as "blessed" than so be it. She had to focus on closing the rift/ fighting the villain and that with as little casualties as possible. And she would do whatever it takes to keep as many of her people alive and well as possible.

Yeah, not really like me ;).

Sometimes yeah, but never my first character in each DA game. The first one always self-insert. After that I'll tell a story, write a few paragraph maybe about what story I want this character to tell.

At least you would make it to the first battle.  I'd need an option like this if I were roleplaying as myself:

I try to. Sometimes the real me comes out and its difficult to make certain choices in regard to my own personal beliefs but then I'm relatively new to roleplaying games. The more I play the easier it is.

The real me plays well in a naive playthrough it seems and thats enjoyable on a first run.

Yes. Can't really play as myself. It'd be severely limiting to only create a character that is based off you.

Thats interesting :) Reason i brought this question up because of the hawke + inquistor interaction, it would be funny if the import system worked and face codes stayed the same, I could imagine for some gamers out there, if hawke, inquistor, warden walked into the same room they would look and act like the same person :D

Yes and no. First time is usually just me if I was in the situation. Later play throughs I'll play as character who are a different gender, or sexuality, or different beliefs than I do, but I still tend to think of it as me if I was female or me if I was pro Templar, ect. They never really take on a life of their own.

To some extent, yes.

I don't pretend I can shape the character any way I want. S/He already has an established backstory in the game.

In DA and ME games you trade freedom for the possibility of playing a character that doesn't feel like a ghost in that universe. (I'm looking at you, TES franchise)

On the other hand, we're offered the choice of what kind of personality and beliefs the Inquisitor has, as well as minor details of his/her past.

A self-insert would involve me just doing whatever is most interesting--that happens in Skyrim a lot where the NPCs are barely developed--I don't care so I just do whatever.

For games where NPCs are more than 2 dimensional mission triggers, I RP.

I have an "evil" (as close as you can get to evil in this game) lady Trevelyan. She's an awful, power-hungry snake. She romanced no one but herself. Chained Cullen to lyrium, Cass is a drunk, she let Blackwall rot, Cole left the inquisition, Solas got punched out, Sera ran away with her tail between her legs, etc.

I always play my humans like this in the DA series--perhaps that alone is a self-insert. I despise human PCs in fantasy games, and so they become despicable.

No, I don't think anyone does that. How is it even possible to make choices that aren't how you live or think. I mean think about it, how can you think it, if you don't think that way. Just nonsense. How can anyone think of another way of life? I'm so confused right now.

Yup, always roleplay.  My Warden's a naive idealist who almost fell apart but somehow managed to get a happy ending.  Hawke's a blithe mage whose mouth always gets her in trouble and who wished Anders would have told her what he was up to so she could've helped.  And the Inquisitor? She's a Qunari two handed fighter who's a raging tornado on the battlefield, and likes to take her time and ponder every fact and facet and gather information and is never sure about anything until the fists start flying.

I also usually have all sorts of head canon going on for what my characters are doing while I'm not playing ("And then she asked about who Blackwall was making that rocking horse for, and then they went around to the villagers being terrorized by dragons and handed out these rings of fire-resistance, and then Sera stole Iron Bull's eyepatch and he bellowed around until Cole finally found it and gave it back to him....")

I sure do. Thats why I get attached to my main canon heroes. All 3 of them have different motivies ambitions personalities even hair and eye color. My Inquisitor was the more aggressive of them. More direct and not afraid to be rude if he feels like its for the greater good. More religious then my warden and hawke to. But I also liked how this helped him grow with my companions cause varric and sera brought him back down to earth sometimes. Or how is LI Cassandra's faith in him helped him when his faith was shaken by events in the game. Being hard on Leliana made it seem they had a slight mutual respect for each other because of his nature to be aggressive and do what needs to be done. Once he start to see more and more ppl have faith in him the more confident he grew into his Herald and Inquisitor role.

For sure. It would be so boring otherwise. I've got 6 playthroughs and they're all radically different from one another.

A part of me is a seed by which my character grows. My canon Warden (an Amell) grew out of my desire to explore the power of will. My canon Hawke started out as a self insert but grew into her own person as the story developed.

That said, so far, my characters and I have shared some basic characteristics; agnostic white women with dark brown hair and eyes (with the occasional blonde, because I am a natural blonde, hehe). I branched out by playing a faithful Andrastian for my first DAI playthrough (which was very interesting), and I'll be doing so again with a faithful Dalish.

And let's be real, if I were to play a true self insert, I'd be freaking out on the battle field, lol.

Yes or at least I try. What you are describing OP is self insertion. I do one self insert playthrough and then the rest is roleplay.

The problem is Bioware restrictive auto-dialogue and simplistic morality and combat system makes roleplaying very difficult.
