I don't play self-inserts so I always roleplay my character.

Yep, always!

The person you are is defined by your life up to that point, so it wouldn't make sense for a character with a totally different life than me to act anything like me.

Plus its fun trying to get into another persons head to make decisions as them. Helps to understand different points of view too!

I really have no choice in the matter but to roleplay rather than do a self-insert due to the assumptions Bioware makes on how your character is.

I always roleplay my characters, though I still prefer to play the same gender as myself. My warrior warden was a brash, athletic city elf, a faithful Andrastian (I'm an atheist), resented/distrusted humans at first, and romanced Leliana (I'm mostly straight IRL). My Hawke was much more sarcastic and rebellious than me. And my Inquisitor is an intellectual who's more stoic and unemotional. A little variety makes the games more interesting. I never end up playing a truly immoral or vicious character though. I can't seem to do it.

Yes...I've never been a fan of the self-insert.

I absolutely do OP. it is the most fun for me that way. I also play many characters and it is more fun to try and make them different from each other. I will however play one that is more of a self insert than others but that is also part of the fun for me. I will probably have at least 8 characters that I play through the entirety of DA:I before I'm done. I like to play male characters, female characters, hetero dudes, hetero chicks, gay guys, lesbian gals, and characters that just can't be bothered with relationships when there is a world to save.

For the fist play I always play as myself. Sometimes I'll try and make the character look like me.
For the rest I like to create unique looking characters and let their own personalities come through as the game progresses. I've found that with DA:I, each of my IQs looks completely different and I can kinda tease a personality out of them over time.

Always lol

What is point of playing RPG game if I don't mean to RP in first place ? I seriously never got that logic with most players who play RPG games but hate RP.

My first playthrough has a lot of me, or I guess, the character does. Subsequent ones I definitely come up with new backgrounds, play them their own way etc. I find it really fun but then I come from an extensive rpg background so it sort of comes natural to any game where I form attachment or can create my own character.

I play myself as I romance through all those I wish to romance. Then, I branch out and begin role-playing. What makes it interesting is to be myself in the body of a gay elf so that I can romance Dorian. That was fun. .

Always try to, though sometimes I make decisions that aren't "in-character". The people I meet influence those choices quite a bit. For example, my first inquisitor started out as a very earnest and serious dalish mage who was falling under Solas' spell, taking to heart everything he said about the Fade and ancient history and artifacts. Then she met Sera and fell madly in love. She learned that things would be just fine if she wasn't so elfy all the time, and that sometimes you just have to go sit on a rooftop and eat cookies, and that if you're lucky you might have a laugh along the way.

Second inquisitor was a firm believer in the Maker and the chantry, and that being The Herald of Andraste  was a good thing. He tried very hard to make the world a better place for everyone, and didn't let the woman he loved back down from doing the same.

My current inquisitor hasn't got much use for magic, and wants nothing to do with the chantry or of being a heroic figure. She's butting heads with her advisors already, heh. Just beginning this adventure, though, so I haven't met everyone yet. I'm interested to see how far that viewpoint takes me.

1st PT is usually a lot of me and how I'd handle things. I don't make the characters look like me but they'll react like I would mostly.
Subsequent PTs I develop other personas for them.

I do a self-insert PT but it is an RPG...so lol, I do roleplay my characters differently than myself.

I have to roleplay. If Dragon Age ever introduced options that allowed me to play myself, it would result in a very, very broken game as I go around smacking people in the face with a giant DON'T sign.

Typically, I play neutral/lawful good type characters who are very strong in what they believe; that's pretty much as far as our similiarities go. My Warden was more a realist, My Hawke a sarcastic *******, and My Inquisitor a softy.

I suck at making look-a-likes, so I always play a character that differs from me by their looks if nothing else. Also I don't think I'd be so goody-two-shoes as some of my quizzys/wardens/hawkes/shepards are. "Hey devilstrap I need ya help" "Ffs Vivienne you're like the ninth person to ask me that can't any of you people fix your own messes".

Considering I am not a demon, dragon slaying, bear hunting kind of person its ALL role play for me. I do like my characters to have good morals. In saying that though if someone crosses one of their friends my characters aren't above slaying them either. I might yell at people IRL if they ****** off me or my friends but im not likely to kill them.

I do in most games, though it's a lot harder for me in inquisition since a great many of the dialogue options are basically the same, you can't be racist, you can't be evil, etc...the "big" choices are lateral with neither better or more beneficial than the other, etc...

My characters' archtypes tends to be similar that of Blackwall and Duncan in the sense of older men with experience. If the protagonist is open for interpretation and his age not being refered to that much then I tend to make them of the age 40. It surprisingly worked with the human Inquisitor even though he is the youngest of the Noble house, I just roleplayed his siblings as being in their 40's and 50's and him being youngest by age 40.

My main playthrough is always as myself, but I do other runs with characters I create that aren't as close to "me."

Always, I've not a big fan of the self-insert, although it's a mixed of roleplay and little bit of self-insert on my Warden.

Define roleplaying.

In this case, I think the thread is defining it as considering your Inquisitor to have a distinct personality that is separate from your own and staying true to that personality, regardless if doing so may end up clashing with both your own personal views and/or narrative benefits.

Yep. First Quizzy was a Dalish skeptic and Rogue. Second was a Tal-Vashoth who hated the Qun but liked Bull. One I just finished was one that would've joined the Qun if possible, but spared the Chargers. Also firmly believed and promoted the Herald of Andraste thing. My latest one is a lady - will have pics soon.

cRPGs are very constrained by nature. some of them manage to give the ilusion of choice. in this case i feel like i'm being shoehorned into one of two roles, depending on the topic of conversation/decision: andrastian or atheist, ruthless ruler or pacifist. the alignment spectrum of the Inquisitor isn't very wide especially if you know those choices won't matter in the long run, technically adding another dialogue option would increase the replayability, gave the PC some personality, some flavour, without impacting the story much, right? i cannot be a drunk dwarf like Oghren, solving his problems with axe. i cannot RP neutral elf who believes deeply in balance, i cannot create madman like Xzar, i cannot have drooling idiot PC, who can comunnicate with others by growling at them.

if I do completionist run - i don't care about RP much, it's about learning the mechanics, being everywhere and doing everything. canon PT is entirely different thing.

best i could do so far is dalish who hates her clan and a dwarf who wants to go back to being murderer and thief. i need only a human zealot to have full set. playing qunari saarebas is not an option, so i don't even want to create Adar

all of them seem so bland in comparison to BW chars :/
