I was expecting Skyhold to be a lovely place to have conversations with your companions, each with their own cosy room.

But what do we get?

Cassandra relegated to standing outside with some dummies. Iron Bull on the other side looking lost.

Josephine stuck behind a desk scribbling all the time.

Varric in the main hall guarding a door.

Solas shuffling around an empty space called a room.

Leliana placed in a dark rookery with some sqawking birds.

Cullen mulling over  a map in a halfway point between towers.

Sera in a kind of room filled with junk.

Dorian looking at book titles and can't find anything he likes in a gangway.

Blackwall confined to the stables.

Sighs...even upgrading doesn't change much .

Basically they are all in places where they find themselves cozy. Also you apparently just got into Skyhold if you still have Iron Bull standing close to Cassandra, he moves to the bar later on once it opens up, sitting in his cozy chair.

And the empty room Solas is wandering, check the wall paintings, he's the one doing them.

No, I am well passed being just arrived...but I stopped noticing Iron Bull so ok he is in a bar. As for Solas I didn't know that. But still...

He's got his table with his books and cup of tea.

I'm more disappointed with how utterly meaningless the garden/courtyard/tower upgrades are, and how much of the place still lies in ruins even at the final stage. You'd think all these devout Andrastians would clean up the little chapel by the gardens at some point. Cullen still doesn't have a roof over his head, the hallway leading to the war room is still broken and so are some of the towers, including the main tower right below our fancy rooms. What the hell?

Also, no storage. That is just mind-boggling.

I actually like the way the characters are situated in Skyhold for the most part. The only one that really troubles me is Cullen, because the roofs in the damn towers are never fully repaired. Dude probably sleeps in his armor and feather boa. Other than the Inquisitor, Sera and Vivienne actually have pretty posh looking places to hang out. But this isn't much different from the way companions are set up in the Normandy. Many of them are perpetually at their post. Only a couple would actually have what looks like a place they could really rest.

Agreed, I think it makes more sense for everyone to have a hangout where they can be implied to do something character-appropriate than for them to sit in a bedroom and essentially do nothing.

Yeah, I thought that the book was a pretty nice touch, especially with descriptions of doodles that get added along the way.

Agreed about the upgrades. The only one that makes a bit of a difference is the garden. The Chantry garden opens a war table mission to collect tithes and the herb garden allows you to plant and collect more herbs. Other than that, the rest is purely cosmetic, which would be fine if the rest of the castle got fixed along the way. Those crumbling walls are just an eyesore.

It'd be nice if we could actually use the sparring ring. I heard sparring and wicked grace mini-games were cut or never finished. And companion mounts too.

Companion mounts would have been nice. Banter could have been implemented to account for this, like imagine Iron Bull complaining about whatever he was riding, or was envious that you had something more majestic.

Yeah, Cassandra has 'mounted' dialogue/banter recorded. Apparently she has a mild case of equinophobia.

Yeah, they should make a TV room with a small bar in the corner, where everybody can meet after a long day full of herb collecting and demon slaying. :P

No, but maybe use the tavern for more?

What we actually ask for is more sandboxing. The characters pretending to do 'different important things'?

I'd have loved for them to maybe move around a little, like in ME3 did with the companions on both the Normandy and on the Citadel, just to mix it up a little? And what was the point of having a tavern when no-one ever seems to ever venture inside it? The Hanged Man was one of my favourite locations in DA2, simply because of how great the atmosphere was, the weird patrons and the various shenanigans that happened inside there?

And as I've said before elsewhere, Varric's location seems very telling when you factor in how homesick he seems and much he misses his friends back in Kirkwall, he's permanently got one foot out the door.

They should have just straight up copy/paste the Witcher 2's taverns.

Imagine arm wrestling with Iron Bull, fist fighting with Blackwall, and playing a hand of Wicked Grace with Varric.

She's got the nicest location both in Haven and in Skyhold, the Haven bar is really atmospheric and her alcove in Skyhold is the kinda loot-nest that I could see myself building if I was in that world.

Speaking of which, I wish that Flissa could have kept the bar if she survived. As much as I like dwarves, the bartender who replaces her is a tool.

I have to concur that the lack of fixing up of the castle in general and the corridor to the war room in particular as the game progresses seems very odd. I think that the companions are generally situated in places that suit their character well, though.

Yeah, Sera's arguably got one of the best locations in Skyhold, because the tavern seems like such a chill place to be, and it's a colorful little enclave tucked up on the second floor. It's a lot like Varric's cushy little den in the Hanged Man, only smaller and more colorful.

Aw Cabot's not bad. I like Flissa, but I can't help but smile whenever I approach that guy. Plus, I like the way he says "Inquisitor".

I think that's why Varric avoids the tavern, it reminds him too much of home... except that the Skyhold tavern lacks the familiar friends, ambience, bloodstains, nutters and the general dive bar qualities that Varric is so used to? As he puts it, the Hanged Man isn't a dive, it's The Dive

Sera's is the best. Just the coziest little spot and she can pop down for a pint anytime she pleases. I worry the most about Cassandra and Cullen. Cassandra's pallet on the floor is just so sad. "Don't you want a bed, hun? You've surely earned it!" I worry about the rain falling on Cullen with that unfinished roof of his.

Viv's digs are very nice and it says a lot about where her highness has herself situated. ;)

I too wonder why we can't clear the rubble in the corridor to the war-room? Surely Josephine is showing visiting dignitaries about and what an awful impression we must be making?!

I wonder if Cassie carts around target dummies on her extra horse or something. :D

The inn's the high point for me, but I don't mind the placement of the companions or whatever. I feel like it's a fairly logically-designed castle, you just have to sort of pick up where what doors lead so you can take the closest route. For example Cullen, going by Solas' door is just so much more convenient. I also really like that tower! Am I the only one that's glad the war room corridor doesn't get fixed? The ambience is great!

Also i have to add, the most disappointing feature was constructing the mage tower. I wasn't even sure I'd found it when I did, it was so small. Like... how do they get any work done in there...

Skyhold just felt a little incomplete to me. I second the ruins remaining even at the final stage. That was weird.
