Why the heck wasn't Michael Beattie rehired for ME3?

Such a shame. As good as Mordin's ME3 actor was it just wasn't the same.

I agree with you that it is a shame, and I did notice that it wasn't our old Mordin immediately. It was immersion breaking, but the new Mordin VA did a decent job. I didn't like how he turned the old Mordin's singing into cheap rhymes and ditties that required no skill to pull off. Frankly, I saw that as insulting, because the new Mordin VA didn't have the skill of Michael Beattie.
I think BioWare was trying to save money since they used a lesser skilled voice actor. A lot of ME3 felt "Value Engineered" to me. This is what happens when you let the bean counters call the shots instead of skilled people or directors with vision.
I hope Bioware learns from this. In my opinion ME2 had uncompromising quality as far as the polish went - somehting ME3 desperately lacked.

I think the 1.5 year development cycle was a problem and still at the time, ME3 was apparently the most expensive Bioware game ever. I guess it was all the big-scale cinematics and amount of animations they needed as well as accounting for all the choices that sucked stuff out of their budget. A shame yes. I got the feeling Bioware overshot with their idea for ME3 and having less time than ever to make it.
But I guess some of those mistakes are on EA, as it is usually the publisher that demands a development timeline ahead of production.

Yeah, this was a shame. I noticed the change in voice as well as the change in writing. Mordin in ME3 felt more like a caricature of the character established in ME2 than an authentic continuation and progression of that character.
Its not the end of the world because Mordin was still done well in ME3, but based on what we saw in ME2, he could have been even better in ME3.

I can't imagine it was out of a desire to save money, as he is primarily a voice actor. I would imagine he got paid a lot less than Martin Sheen or Yvonne Strahovski, who primarily do movies and television and are much more famous. If you're going to cut corners it's going to be with the most expensive voice talent, right? Hell you could probably find some no-name who could do a passable Martin Sheen impression.
Maybe he was difficult to work with.

Considering that every other major VA from 2 made it into 3, my guess is that Beattie (or, more probably, Beattie's agent) asked for well over the going rate for their work, and refused to come down. The guy who took over did a great job, I thought, and Beattie was pretty good as that robotic wolf in MGS Rising.

Probably disagreement on contract terms. Bioware did get every other voice actor so it's not like one more would've made any difference. Perhaps he demanded a raise or had a conflict with one of the higher-ups or simply didn't like the writing for the ME3 Mordin. William Salyers did quite a good job as his replacement.
P.S. Anyone noticed Javik commenting on the change? ![]()

Please. VAs don't get a script. Maybe he just wasn't available.

I referred to writing of Mordin's dialogue. Perhaps he felt that it was far from his ME2 character.
In reality it's probably some combination of different events that led to the other actor taking the job.

oh that, I thought you meant a comment on the new voice actor. I believe I would comment on someone talking like that, too.

Rumor was he asked for too much money. Someone a while back said that Chris Priestly confirmed it to him. Take it for what you will.
Well, if he did then I suppose he shot himself in the foot, proverbially speaking. ME3 didn't have that much Mordin in it, so expecting more money or a higher rate for less Mordin conversation doesn't make sense to me. Maybe he though he had them by the cojones and it backfired on him.
I seem to remember Mark Meer doing a pretty good Mordin impersonation too. You can't demand a higher rate of pay if you are replaceable.
It is regrettable, regardless. I miss the old Mordin voice. Can you imagine having a voice remarkable enough to be immortalized in a series such as Mass Effect? I'd have jumped on it in a heartbeat.

While you can interpret it either way I'm sure the writer's intent was to comment on the distjointedness and rashness of Mordin's speech, not his change of voice.

It was yet another questionable decision made by Bioware.
They never called Beattie back for ME3, while hired a new voice actor who was costly as Beattie.
Bioware never answered why and most likely never will.

Sure, It was a bummer, but to be honest, I couldn't hear the difference between the voice actors. I really enjoyed Mordin in ME2 and ME3 so it was a win-win for me.

I guess it was just bad planning or something. Perhaps he wasn't available in the timeframe they needed him. After all ME3 was super crunchtime all throughout its development.

Priestly did answer, and this was while he was still working for Bioware. But of course the easy thing to do is pile up on the Bioware hate.
