At least 3 dmp files has the same invalid pointer thing. Which is somehow not surprising as they all are the same errors.

What the hell?!
Its working now....
This is what I did
1. Talk to Yeoman -> mentions that I should talk to Joker
2. Talk to Joker -> pick ship is just a copy conversation
3. Check the terminal next to Joker to unlock a codex entry
4. Go back to Galaxy Map and open private terminal and go through all the messages
5. Talk to yeoman again -> choose to ask how she feels
6. Get on the Galaxy Map platform -> turn around and face backwords!
7. Then press "space' to opengalaxy map
8. TADA!!!!!!
So I don't know how it was fixed ;p

I reinstalled the game after I checked to make sure all my drivers were up to date. Even the sound card driver (which I never use because I am deaf!) I used Driver Genius to make sure I got the important drivers updated. I'm running Windows 7 on a dual-core processor with 2 gigs RAM and a NVIDIA card. All newer stuff.
On another board, someone said talking to the yeoman before accessing the map solved the problem. LOL!!! (May as well try it!)

Did you do this with an already existing character? or a new one?

Your fix seem to not be working for me. Still same screen and ntdll.dll has to be closed a report will be sent to MS blah blah blah.

EdwardBlake13: I just disable the sound. Wonder if it helps speed up my game? I am waiting for a good pair of force feedback headphones (or make my own pair?). The headphones I had were trashed after less than a year.

I've been having this same issue, and It was an easy fix. If you have turned your sound off in the configuration menu, turn it back on. I had it off when I was getting crashes, turned it back on and it works fine again.

Anyone have any luck with this? I spent a half hour on live chat with EA support and they bumped me to the next level. Mine crashes at galaxy map as well. I also get those same four icons from xbox.
Also...my download was from direct2drive

Did you tried the standing on the galaxy map facing backward from the galaxy map stevewendy? If not why?

Jeez - I had that problem and turning on the sound back on sure does fix it. I guess the tester does not test it without sounds because 99% of the players are not deaf. *shrugs*

Mine is fixed by removing all USB devices (except keyboard & mouse)
Somehow it interferes with my Belkin f5d8054v3 and a Kingston flash drive.

USB device, sound driver and simple position of camera to fix galaxy map crash bug. The list keep getting longer and more interesting.

After I installed my 5970 I crashed when on the galaxy map. I decided I'd deal with it later and now it works again. The things I did between that time was install the latest DirectX, install a new sound card and did a Windows Update.

Already done most of those but they didn't worked for me. Sound like you had outdate driver/card for sound there.

Just posting to add data on this.
i'm having this problem too. I too did a windows 7 64bit upgrade this morning. This evening I've loaded the game, run around the ship for a bit all fine, although I noticed no sound which was weird, then crash on galaxy map.
Turning around to open the map (180 deg) doesn't work and I can't turn the sound on because it isn't off - well, it's not coming out the speakers, but it's "on" in the menu
.
I'll try a re-install in the morning see if that helps. I can post direcX specs of my system if it'd help but it's nothing odd.

I can confirm that disabling sound in the Mass Effect 2 configuration utility produced the crash to desktop on accessing the Galaxy Map issue.
Also experienced the symptom of XBOX buttons being displayed on a black screen.
Reenabling the sound in the Mass Effect 2 configuration utility fixed both issues.
This is speculation on my part but I'm guessing the XBOX buttons symptom is merely a side effect of the combination of the fact that the devs probably based the game on XBOX controls and found it easy to simply reskin/rewrite the controls that apply to the PC and the fact that the crash prevents the Galaxy Map from displaying.

re-install fixed it.
I couldn't fix it with any of the other suggs here (my sound wasn't disabled, the turning backwards thing didn't work), but re-install did the trick.

bump. As I half suspected, the problem's cropped up again and none of the fixes work. Re-installing every few days is going to get old, this bug needs to be figured out

Did you tried config turning off sound? Turn on software acceleration? *under dxdiag>run>start menu* Erm Checking for sound driver updates? If you already done those then dunno what else to try short of rollback to an older driver or try another sound card *if you have one*. If no sound card no other ideas. For the next week I will be out of town might not check on this topic.

SO.... I have been playing an illegal copy of Me2 for 4-5 months now because my little brother decided it would be funny to mutilate my discs.... I didn't want to rebuy them so i thought i would steal them this time.
Well i have been playing excellently for the past few months (beat it twice in fact), except for the fact that my comp is running well under system requirements AMD x2 1.2GHz, Radeon HD3200, 4gigs ram... blah blah blah. And my only problem was that I had to run it in minimal visual setting, still no major problem. UNTIL
About two or three days ago i decided to surf the internet and i got redirected to a site with a virus embedded into the coding of the page. I spent about 14 hours digging through my system, with various anti-virus software until about 300 something corrupted files were pulled from my computer. In doing all this i did update my windows 7(x64) on one of my restarts. Well prior to all this, I had already landed on the citadel and was clearing through garrus' Loyalty mission. I picked up where i left off and finished it, then Thane's, Then council BS.... I get back to That beautiful Cerberus Normandy and my Map is broken. I have spent a few hours running around the Normandy to see if there is anything that i can do, other than getting shot down by miranda. Well still nothing and i googled this Page. I'm going to try all tht was suggested here and I'll update when i can. I believe its the sound driver cause i have noticed it being slightly wacky.
