Hello everyone,
There was an issue over the past weekend that was challenging for me to address in real time as I was not in Edmonton at the time and doing things remotely over a phone wasn’t something I was able to do. I authorized the mod team to suspend some accounts over the weekend until I could get an opportunity to review the situation and be able to discuss what had happened. I apologize for the delay in addressing this and some of the quick responses I gave to people that sent me PMs.
There’s two issues that I can see:
- First is that some are getting increasingly frustrated with the amount of interaction they are receiving from BioWare with respect to multiplayer, which is exacerbated when a patch comes out and it isn’t clear on whether something was fixed or there are balance changes that weren’t stated. On some level people want to hear more from the development team about patch updates simply as a degree of acknowledgement.
- This frustration has started to spill over in a way that started to galvanize into direct attacks against EA/BioWare and even to individual employees. To the point where some people were using BioWare’s boards to rally a call for reprimand and even firing against an employee of BioWare.
To the first point I understand. I think we can look to improve communication and as someone that tries to interact more with the fanbase would love to encourage more devs to speak candidly with the fanbase. From now on we are going to make sure we are providing updates on balance changes. Nobody likes stealth nerfs and we want to be more transparent in our adjustments to DAI. We can also make this information easier to find on our forum.
To the second point, this sort of thing complicates the first point because if we want to encourage discussion with our fanbase it’s our responsibility to ensure that our devs feel safe in this space. The way the thread started, and especially evolved, was concerning not only to several developers but also for many fans. This type of behavior will not be tolerated.
To some this will skirt the line of “silencing criticism” but it’s not. Pointing out issues and discussing what you think does and does not work well is valuable. I have heard this right from the dev team themselves. People suggesting that we only seek to shakedown our customer base for money and don’t care about anything beyond that agitate the forum and help foster an unsafe environment by rabblerousing. This sort of stuff is also going to be something we do not tolerate on the forums. This also extends to using our forums to galvanize legal action against our studio. I view all of these things exclusively from the standpoint of undermining developer interaction.
As a result I will be continuing to follow up on that thread and discussions that have spawned from it. Some people will receive further moderation actions.
If you have comments/feedback regarding this you are free to PM me with them.
