Hi All-

So far I have played Reaver, Assassian and Legionaire.

Will save the mage/archer stuff for later. I like bashing and hitting up close.

Anyway Reaver is a lot of fun being in the thick of things and trying to stay alive and not get gimped.

Assassian moves a lot smoother/faster and is a total blast with Stealth and jumping in and out and still can stay alive in the fray with careful positioning. Plus don't have to worry about a shield.

That brings us to Legionaire. First, swinging a much smaller single handed axe even though I have a Unique 23 is a bit underwhelming as well as the damage output that goes with it. Yeah I realize you are suppose to tank but other than the ability to stay alive and resurrect other people, it is slower, less dps, and basically doesn't do much.

What am I missing about how great the Legionaire is and it's playstyle/capabilities?

You can amplify your Legionnaire DPS output, but it requires several Cunning promotions. Once you make them, you can improve your critical hit chance, then spec into Flow of Battle. If you have Caliban, you can also use two superb critical hit chance rings instead of HoK ones. Also To the Death is perfect for increase DPS, just stay alive after using it.

He is a little boring to me, but I don't mind playing the tank that catches all of the aggro.  I think I may try a more offensive build on my next promotion to see if it changes my opinion.

Legionaire is pure tank in my eyes, he is very good at holding aggro so your team can attack freely. I tried to make him more Dps than tank and it didn't work out very well. I won't make that mistake again.
The templar is more of a 1handed Dps character than tank, her Spell purge/Wrath of heaven combo is satisfying.

The Legionnaire is about tanking in all its forms. This boils down to threat management, damage negation, and damage absorption. As the classic "tank" role, your goal is to make sure enemies are focused on you, because you have the skills and passives to withstand or ignore their attacks. Where a Legionnaire shines is in keeping the rest of the team alive and safe, allowing them to focus on pouring out damage. Remember: a dead dps is no dps.

As for direct dps, expect to be at the bottom of the scoreboard most games, especially on higher difficulty settings and when your teammates have similar "tier" gear as you. If seeing huge numbers and 1shotting mobs is your thing, you might not like the Legionnaire. I've thought about having "damage taken" as something that contributes to score, which would make tanking a lot more attractive to some people, but that's an entirely different discussion.

Of course, with the right setup you could spec more into dps, but I would argue that's only a good move if you feel you have the tanking part covered already. Since he's so clearly suited for tanking, the rest of your team will probably assume you can hold the aggro while they pewpew away.

Make sure you grab Walking Fortress and its upgrade, as well as War Cry + upgrade. After that, you're really hard to kill, and I like to go all the way down the other tree for Counterstrike and just drop Shield Wall completely. Shield Wall is a fantastic ability, but given how many amazing abilities he has access to, I tend to drop it once I have enough skill points.

Payback Strike is solid damage, super fast, good aoe, stuns (when upgraded, against taunted enemies), and most importantly, breaks you out of stuns. Right after the Demon Commander screams in your face, just show him some Payback Strike and shake off the fear.

On Threatening level he can do some serious damage.  Weapon of choice certainly makes a difference.  Currently I am useing rare lvl22 Dwarven Crusher mace on this character.  With the explosions perk, he's a wee bit of a walking bomb.  :)

After reading a number of threads regarding Legionairre, setting him up as a tank should in no way diminish your DPS ability; however this game is pretty weaponcentric, so that does indeed make a big difference.  A good weapon + animation reload cancel makes for a good/quick DPS Lego.  Granted, Perilous is another story...

2nd to the Arcane Warrior (whom only dinks seems to play it seems)  the Legionaire is my fav team mate.  He really takes the heat off of the rest of the team and lets the fancy dancers do their thing.  I am finally enjoying playing him now that I have at least a clue about hid defensive abilities.  I do agree about the poor damage out put of one handed weapons.  My hand legit gets tired in a perilous match.

I am also addicted to shield bash and use it with him and Belinda the holy in a serial fashion.

Yeah he is boring, unfortunately I find all of the warriors bar the Katari boring, hopefully they bring back the duellist as another option to the warrior category

A good weapon will do wonders for your Lego. I was lucky and got a Thunderstrike pretty early on. Once his Crit starts to go up, he can do pretty decent DPS on Threatening.

Perelous is a little different in that it's not the best idea to stand in one spot and facetank everything while auto attacking. I can keep WF up a lot of the time, but not all of the time. On perelous, full guard equals an extra couple of hits, that's about it. So when WF isn't up, you need to be moving (especially if you've used CS and have the whole zone aggro'd on you). I use the Lego more to group everything up as tight as possible to maximize the overall group DPS, and to make sure the glass cannons stay alive.

Tracking of "damage absorbed" or "hits taken" would be nice.

I use Payback Strike, Walking Fortress, Warcry and Counterstrike. With the passive "Flow of Battle" you can start to use Payback Strike very often. Same if you time your Walking Fortress correctly, you can use two Paybacks really close together.

I have stared at the ability trees and pondered over making a DPS SnS build...just haven't got around to it.

Run something like Walking Fortress, Shield Bash, Payback Strike, and then either Lunge & Slash or Grappling Chain, and probably upgrade most or all.

Could put Shieldwall in there if that's your thing, I'm not really a fan though (I'm bad with the timing)

For passives I would get Bear Mauls the Wolves, Flow of Battle, Crippling Blows, Unyielding, Turn the Bolt, and Turn the Blade.

Meh, screw it, I'm going to try it out next promotion. Worst case scenario I'll go back to my old build.

To me, it seems the Warrior classes are not as strong as the Rogues and Mages when you first start DAMP, but they get much better as their base stats and gear improve. Improving your base Cun (Crit chance & Ranged Defense!) is one of the best things you can do to improve any warrior class IMO.

I play the kit for the shield bash and payback strike. Yeah, yeah, I know. It's not an optimal play style. Lego's got some great animations for that stuff so that it's fun to play.

Yup, pretty much this. Legionnaire excels at being able to fill the classic Aggro Tank role. He's not about pushing out high DPS. Some specific gear can help of course but, that's true for every class.

I think it is unfair that being a tank is being rewarded as appearing to be the worst at the end.  I always felt that the player should be reward for damage taken as well as damage dished.

Here's a build I had fun with, its a little more DPS, but still very tanky. Mind you, I run on Threatening mostly right now, waiting on a few rings and weapons to drop before going regulary into perilous, I also PUG most of the time. Oh, I also have Caliban so.... yeah, that helps a lot.

But here it is.

Walking Fortress-Invulnerabilty plus guard, win and win

Counterstrike-Full guard in an instant, enemies get hit for hitting you

Payback Strike-Area knockdown/stun plus it lets you recover from cc effects such as DC fears

Lunge and Slash-Gets you from mob to mob pretty fast and does some pretty good damage

For passives you want flow of battle and cutting words and the one just before CS, the rest is up to you.

I've had a blast with this build, and I had some wasted points as I was trying out shield bash, either way, its higher dps and still very tanky. Don't use sheild wall, on routine and threatening its decent, but on perilous everything just hits too hard, they'll go through your stamina in a blink of an eye.

Seriously, lego is so OP for perilous runs! I build him with shield wall, war cry, walking fortress and counter strike! With +guard on hit shield and hp recover on hit sword. Then for accessories i have +50 stamina neclace, superb range defense belt and superb crit chance rings! Virtually unkillable after i get all active skills plus because will never run out of guard and stamina! I'm Plus i can hold all the aggro for my party 24/7! Just face tank the boss too if you want.

If Lego is  boring, what is Archer then?

Spam archer’s lance the whole match for the win.Playing as a archer makes you selfish little CoD kid.

Though I still have to be in a certain mood to truly enjoy Legionnaire, I did find that I started to enjoy him more once I'd gotten some more interesting weapons.

I am really loving Fist of the Magister on him, as the Immolate proc seems to be constantly going off due to hitting large crescents of multiple enemies when combining AOE taunts and Payback Strike. Plus it's a mace that looks like a corn on the cob, so delicious.

Hmm,so many hours played,so many gold spent and yet every day I hear something new.

Interesting items are  popping like shrooms after rain encouraging different strategies, but so little space in inventory :(

Yeah this. Usually he's not my first pick, but if I'm in a lobby filled with glass cannons and no warriors I'm like "okay, I guess I'll go tank then" and switch to Lego. He can be quite fun, you still have to work for it to make sure the enemies just don't ignore you. Plus NOTHING beats the feeling of jumping in front of a squishy mage who's preoccupied casting, raise your shield wall just in time to bounce away that arrow/wraith attack intended for him/her. You feel like a goddamn superhero! Plus a boss battle without a tank can just as well end in a wipe.

It gets boring sometimes, when DPS in party are so great that monsters are not touching you and you are not able to hold aggro since taunts go weird sometimes.

Just think yourself as backup plan, if the 3 DPS in your party dies...

At least i get satisfaction by using TTD on boss at the end..
