What was Bioware thinking giving the Tier 1 Assassin Focus ability a 3 second time limit?

"Uh oh, I'm down one man and the battle's not going in my favor....better activate my Assassin Focus Power of Ultimate STEA....-and it's gone already."

Spoiler

Bioware needs to listen to Sun Tzu.  He had some words of wisdom on this very subject.

Ninja who can only stay in concealment for three seconds at a time are not very good ninja.

assassin's got gipped hard on the focus ability

now it was Oh let's say

5 seconds

9 seconds

15 seconds

of all attacks are crits and all party members get 50%+ crit damage

then it would be worth using

even so

i'd skip it

assassins already have enough fun toys

Yep, this is why I love playing assassin. I don't need to wait for my focus ability to melt my enemies' faces. I can do it in every fight.

IMO, the focus ability might be worthwhile if it granted stealth that was immune to Perceived. Bring Cole along, and half the party (the half that's responsible for the majority of the dps) has guaranteed crits from stealth. Slap down a Mark of Death, assassinquisitor and Cole chug some Mighty Offense, Cole activates CoS, and go to town.

Unfortunately, most bosses break stealth, and that amount of spike is complete overkill for anything less than a boss. But, if it granted unpoppable stealth...

I never even bothered unlocking in on my Assassin run. Absolutely terrible skill. I don't even give it to Cole unless it's endgame and all the good stuff has already been picked. Thankfully, other skills in the tree more than make up for the gimpy focus ability.

cloak of shadows cole/inq + lightning flask arrow machine gun sera/inq + whirlwind critting blackwall + critting static cage + energy barrage [mage]

energy barrage would proc flashpoint :DD

i remember before flashpoint was patched to have an internal cooldown you could spam energy barrage for entire minutes

actually i had sera with bow of griffon + artificer inqiz + vivenne + cloak do that once

Sera was point blank at a dragon and elt me tell you + might offense + lighning flask + cloak of shadows = all 3 shots hit and inquisitor has no cooldown for 8 seconds for artificer

i spammed spinning blades [yes dual dagger artificer] and twin fangs back and forth with a flanka ttack mixed in after use mark of the rift and viv used dis field to lock the dragon up even further :DD

Focus abilities are generally too niche or too OP to be worth using. Assassins are not missing out.
