I like followers romancing each other if you're not in a romance with them but yeah... no cheating. No thanks. I'll take some other kind of drama. That's just way too shitty.

Hey! remember that somewhat likable character from ME2? That guy that was shy and gentle and somewhat well thought out? And how they butchered his character in ME3?

I did, I remembered, and it was brutal. I was wondering why more people weren't up in arms about it and ranting and raving like me on the forums about our options at the moment!

:*( It sucks when they cheat. I will say this however, cheating, but then trying to come back to the character with a sweet gesture or something, I wouldn't be too against that. I will give them credit for trying to bring some realism into it.. Just felt like they sorta just, dropped it all together.

I want characters to turn down my advances. I want random NPCs to flirt with me, where I can flirt back, politely take the compliment, tell them I'm not interested, or admonish them for being inappropriate. I want to be able to flirt with companions and NPCs and have it lead precisely nowhere because after a while we realise to start a relationship would be a really, really bad idea. I want to make rich friendships with characters - friendships that rival romance storylines in terms of content and screen time. I want to have a proper BFF companion who I can go to when I want to discuss what just happened, and pour my heart out to, and get a hug from, and get drunk with, and fall asleep next to after laughing until 3am, without it needing to turn into a romance. I want to be able to create a playthrough where it isn't necessary to romance anyone because there is rich, rewarding friendship content that fulfills my desire for some sort of emotional attachment to the game. I want to overhear my companions talking about who they find attractive, who they don't like, who they had a rather indiscreet liaison with the night before. I want my companions to fall in love with someone not in the party. I want my companions to go through a break up and come to me for consolation.

(these things kind of happen already in DAI, with Cassandra and Dorian, at least).

I like how romance was done in DAI, I really liked how (at least in the case of Cullen's romance) it felt a part of the story instead of being a separate thing, and  how every companion have a different outlook on romance. An option to have a developed friendship thrown into the mix would be great, I mean Dorian already offers you his friendship, it's pity you don't get to know him better after that.

I also would like for a romance to lead to variety of other things. I'm going to repeat myself, but I would love to be able to play chess with Cullen or invite him to hunt dragons, instead of kissing.

As for cheating and dying boyfriends and girlfriends, personally I would not like this kind of drama and avoid it like a plague.

Kaiden and Garrus are my forever ME romance options. Thane was too but... oh,BW.

But, you meant they butchered Kaiden? How? You mean by becoming cynical and harder, instead of staying this sweet and shy guy he was in ME1? It was a major change but in a way I can see where he's coming from. Many times while playing I tried to see things through his eyes... and other times I just wanted to smack him upside the head. But in the end, I finally got the old Kaiden back. Too bad about the ending, though. <_<

It's unfortunate that the idea of unpredictability in romance should automatically be something terribly negative or reducing that character to a "fridge death" or something to make us feel bad. Cynicism gets tiresome. I think it's more than enough that we've been able to kill or leave companions for dead in the past, romanced or not. Having a companion up and cheat or get Gwen Stacey'd isn't exactly engaging material.

There are very few angst free relationships in DA, they are  sort of like unicorns.

DAI and ME3...

Do you feel like they are roughly equal in terms of development for said romance or not so?

I made no such suggestion.

Diversity's great, when it adds something meaningful and engaging to the story. Plot-device death geared specifically for love interests is not something I consider particularly engaging, and cheating even less so, since it's one of the lowest-hanging fruit in terms of romantic drama. What's the point other than to slap on some cheap soap opera-ish drama in a story that should be nothing about that?

I haven't played ME3 only saw it on youtube so I can't comment (all the talks about the ending discouraged me). I do think though that in terms of character interaction and treatment of romance DAI did better than the previous installments in this series, at least to the extend that I saw.

In any case I don't find overboard drama very appealing. You can write realistic engaging and functional romance without making it a harlequin novel.

ME3 isn't exactly the best in terms of romantic development, but then I consider ME in general to be a bit inferior to the entirety of the DA franchise at this.

There was drama with Josephine? She cheated, wallowed in misery, lied and dumped the IQ? I was not aware of this.

Oddly enough almost all of those things happened in DA:I too :P despite that one happening all in ME3 with one character.

I mean, Bull flat out tells you at the start he just wants to be FWB, he changes eventually..

Blackwall just straight up has sex with the inquisitor and then turns himself in right after that.

Solas turns you down right after you say you love him!!

Josephine? Her only crime was that her romantic path was so filled with.. dramatic flare O.o It was a different kind of drama, you didn't have near death or cheating or lying going on.. You dueled some noble in VR in front of many, and did the whole leg up kissy animation..

Depends on who you ask IMO but it seems like you can find almost as much drama with DA:I romance versus ME universe.

I bet you haven't played Mass Effect with female Shepherd. Jacob cheats on you and Thane dies. And no, it's not as nice as you seem to think ^^

Wasn't sure what they were even thinking of when they did that with Jacob. There was no tell.. It was just thrown out there. What the hell was that.. :/

I think that the worst part is that they were both totally forgotten by the writers lol. I wouldn't have been surprised if Jacob just disappeared off the map entirely and was never even mentioned again. What's funny is that his cameo doesn't seem any less substantial than Jack's yet somehow Jack's is more memorable. I guess it's because she's still a fiery personality and makes Jacob look like a plank of wood in a wet suit, but I can feel her presence in the Grissom mission, whereas the only thing I remember about Jacob is "Gravity's one mean mother!"

Jacob was a pretty unpopular character, which I suspect is the big reason for this. Heck Shepard didn't get to respond to this in any meaningful way until the Citadel DLC.

Cheating no. Is something that would ruin even the best character in my eyes. (not that there was much to ruin in Jacob, but now, even if I don't romance him, the tube is his destiny forever.)

I'm more than fine with the companions, when not romanced, getting together. I find them cute, and somehow a little a relief when I'm not romancing them, so I know they can be happy even without my characters romancing them. (but really, Fenris...why with Isabela no problem at all, and with Hawke all the shocks and terrible things? are the Hawke's genitalia poisoned or what???)

if instead of cheating there is a betrayal of some sort, I'd like to have something like Zevran. Where how it end is based on how much was hight the friendship between him and the Warden.

I hate inevitable drama. I like it only if is more based on choices.

But I didn't said that there is no drama in DAI? I actually said that you would be hard pressed to find a character without any drama. I said that I don't like overboard drama and that  to the extend that I saw the romance and character interaction was better written than in the previous installments, there being or not being drama has little to with it being better done.

Lol @ tube destiny.

Anyway, I agree that Zevran's was pretty well done. It was satisfying when he turned on the crows and fought alongside you, but I love that he can be a totally different person if his approval isn't high enough.

I wouldn't mind someone like Servis for a romanceable character there is a potential there to base the romance dynamic on completely unrelated to angst things.

Might as well include it for your party members, like how it is hinted between isabella and fenris in DA2.

Would be even better if you romanced someone and they cheated on you, and you get the choice to kick them out. drama drama.

Relationships have just become very predictable in bioware games now, just pick romance options and be nice to them = done deal.

Have any romanced characters die too as part of plot devices. I want to see tears.

No thanks, I don't want another companion with Isabela's attitude. Sleep with someone else while in the relationship with me...where's my murder knife.
