Literally, over Solas. Has never happened to me with a game before. It is too much like real life, too close; I have heard those words and have fallen to my knees pleading. All regrets and sacrifice and things not said. It is so real and so sad but can you let me change it please? Just a patch where I can follow and find him and things can be different; I will pay anything you ask. I can't change my actions and choices in real life but in that imaginary place I can. You are such a good writer and all your choices are beautiful, but please. I go there to pretend.

I have yet to finish his romance, but from what I saw on YouTube, I basically had to ditch Cullen, despite this being my female mage Warden who shares striking similarities to her mage cousin, Hawke, world-state. And I was sure I'd romance Cullen in full, 'cause he deserves it. Solas' romance is quiet possibly the best one ever written by BioWare. A romance that genuinely works as one that ultimately fails, no matter what you do.

I'm a straight male, and I can't help but replay the conversation and kiss in the Fade. And I love the scene after his personal quest in the Exalted Plains, which is similar. And because you have to go through those scenes, or else, are very likely to, makes me think that this is BioWare's canon romance. I know that there is no "official" canon, I'm referring to the books. And a female elf mage and his romance seem to fit perfectly.

I have yet to cry at his romance, or anyone's for that matter. Dragon Age or otherwise.

Hopefully we'll get DLC or an expansion that expands on his story - and we very likely will.

Bioware LOVES this stuff. Morrigan and Alistair for instance both had bitter endings, although in the latter it could be some what avoided.

I was broken up over it and I didn't even romance him. Definitely my favorite Bioware character of all time. Thought his character was awesome ever since the character reveal... "Solas hates people who look at him and just see an elf. He considers that kind of attitude part of the black-and-white dichotomy that has led to so much tragedy in the Dragon Age world. Templars versus mages, demons versus spirits, elves versus humans… it’s more complicated than that. Come to think of it, 'It’s more complicated than that,' may actually be Solas’s battle cry."

This damned quote and I was already planning on having him as a mainstay in my party.

Solas, we didn't always agree on anything, but I'll be damned if I don't respect you as well.

EDIT: A nice little snippet from the same interview: "[Solas is] pretty straightforward, honestly. Just your average elven apostate who voluntarily joins the Inquisition in the middle of the mage rebellion to lend his expertise with the Fade." Patrick Weekes.

Bioware's writers do this stuff too well.

I feel like it's some sort of emotional roller coaster that doesn't end sometimes.

Look I like his character and I had my Inquisitor romance him. What I don't get is people "literally crying" because the romance didn't end with a white picket fence and being overly attached like it was a real boyfriend. What should be just a bit of extra flavour and drama to the story seems to have turned into a huge deal for a whole lot of people. Just recently I saw someone claiming they got jealous because a friend romance the same character as them and it's their romance. Just...what the hell.

I'm probably going to offend a lot of people but god damn is this sort of thing making me want to just slap some sense into someone.

You have to hand it to BW... they are actually great with romance plots. I joked that they should just make dating sims.

I considered visiting a mental institution after I fell in love with a blonde, pixelated elf named Sera. There was a point there where I thought about her all of the time, couldn't wait to come home from work just so I could go into her room at the pub, angle the camera just right so I could stare at her as she stood there, deep in thought.

What little heart I have actually broke on the first PT where I failed to romance her. On the second PT I went against the grain of my beliefs and looked for a wiki romance dating guide for tips on how to get with her. Oh.... the shame. I swear I put more effort into her than I ever have with girls in real life... looking for every opportunity for approval gain. Reloading to earlier saves if I ever got one slight disapproval... basing every decision around her and what she would want.

Now... if the Sera romance was like Solas's aka tragic ending... I probably would have gotten depressed too. I completely understand the girls on here and their attachment to Solas.

In all BW games I've played I had never actually "felt" anything for my romance options...

Don't be so callous.
Her post was CLEARLY about the memory and pain of a real life broken heart. Her in-game romance just brought those memories and feelings rushing to the surface.

You can't just slap "sense" into matters of the heart.

I mean seriously dude. Have you never had your heart broken?

Went with and succeeded with Sera on the first runthrough, with a Dalish elf no less.

If Sera had a tragic end like Solas', I'd pretty much balk and babble "But But Why though?" Wouldn't feel sad or depressed, just... "Why?"

And then I'd spend about an hour looking into it and seeing if there is any way to avoid it, and when there isn't, just kind of sit and think it through.

I dunno, I think it's pretty great that fiction makes us think about things, but I'd rather we learn from it than dwell on what could be.

You're going to worry yourself into an early grave if you take whatever other people think about romances seriously. Tumblr leaks every once and a while and these here parts are right in the middle of the flood plains.

We've really gotten our share of tragic romances in this game. And I thought all my fan tears ended when Mordin and Legion died.

Solas leaves for the Crossroads, Dorian leaves for Tevinter, Sera dumps you if your elven PC believes Mythal's temple was real, Cassandra leaves to be Divine, Blackwall turns to be... not Blackwall, Iron Bull shuts off if Chargers get killed, and Cullen's a lyrium addict who's going to fight it for the rest of his life.

Maybe I should have romanced Josephine... Ah, heck, I love Solas anyway.

I loved Morrigan's romance and how it turned out, even before Witch Hunt and DAI.

I'm probably going to offend a lot of people but god damn is this sort of thing making me want to just slap some sense into someone.

Most stories are created to trigger emotional reactions in people (among other things). Sometimes they're very successful in that, and sometimes a story romance hits all the buttons in a player to make them connect strongly to their characters in some way. This can be unhealthy, but it can also be cathartic. I have no way to judge which one it is in every single case, so I usually refrain from commenting.

In the end, people have been crying, laughing and raging about things happening in stories probably ever since people started telling each other stories. It's natural. As one of the developers once said, the one thing they don't want, the thing that makes them feel they failed as storytellers, is indifference.

Solas romance is a success exactly because it makes people feel like that, never mind that some people react a little more strongly than they probably should.

If not bawling and offering to throw money at people to 'fix' the ending of a romance is read as even trying to be "badass" this fandom needs a hell of lot more than a slap.
