Rivalry was dumb.

So were gifts.

I'm not really a fan of rivalry. If I do enough for a companion to strongly dislike or hate the protagonist, that companion should simply try to distance him/herself at some point. The only character with which a rivalry system may work is the sibling, since familial ties are a likely factor in that relationship, unlike the gaggle of acquaintances who may be able to just take or leave your very existence.

I thought that gifts got a bit better in DA2, mainly because the dialogue to follow was more entertaining (not to mention that ALL gifts had actual dialogue), like Isabela's ship in a bottle. But DA:I's method was definitely my favorite.

I miss it too. It was a flawed but interesting system (although I would have broken off its gameplay aspect) that could have been improved, rather than discarded wholesale. It certainly had more potential than Inquisition's approval system.
