You have to wonder why Hawke keeps on disappearing.
Of course; maybe the next game has Hawke/Stroud/Nightmare/Cory show up as bad guys or anti-heroes to help stop whatever bad thing is going on.
They can call themselves "The Fade Force Four".

You meet Hawke in DA 4 in his cottage smoking a pibe and the head of the nightmare is mounted above his fireplace.
That cabbage face was literally moving at the speed of staggering one inch per hour, so I believe Hawke definately survived and is now looking for an exit while smoking fade weed.

Mmm fade weed. Sounds...mystifying!
That nightmare didn't even feel scary or strong to be honest. I definitely see Hawke killing it or surviving
Honestly? The whole decision to leave someone behind in the Fade was so contrived and felt so paltry that I hope they find a way to bring whoever was left there back. The individual in question was physically transported to the Fade (a very unusual occurrence), we don't see a corpse, and the guy in question is either the Champion of Kirkwall or a senior member of the Grey Wardens. Yeah, they've survived. Here's hoping Merrill or Morrigan or someone manages to free them eventually.

I can see it now.
Questgiver: There is an agent who you may find of interest. The Inquisitor crossed paths with her before, and may be able to help with your predicament.
PC: I'll give it a look. [travels to Hawke Manor outside Tantervale]
[knocks on door. Door opens and the PC is greeted by an elven servant]
Orana: Welcome to the Hawke estate.
PC: Hawke, as in the Hawke? The Champion of Kirkwall? But...reports of the battle of Adamant indicated that she was left in the Fade for dead.
[Hawke comes to the door]
Hawke: Oh, no doubt Varric added that little blurb in.
Did you see the body? No way they are killing a predominate hero in a cutaway. The Gods of Prose would smite them down for such shoddy storytelling.

I'm in my third playthrough and my second time leaving Hawke in the Fade. He really seems to want to stay behind so I chose him. The first playthrough I left him behind and I watched him fight the nightmare demon and then I left the fade. This time however, I saw Hawke take a fatal blow. The nightmare demon struck Hawke and Hawke went limp, arms falling to his sides and fell to his knees before I left the Fade. Looks like he does indeed die there. Varric was so heartbroken, kept asking me where is Hawke.
They didn't even had to say "likely dead" to make us doubt, because Gaider will spin his magic wand and bring characters back to life on his whim anyway.
I hope they let me save my Hawke or I will be most annoyed! I couldn't leave Alistair there, I just couldn't. My Hawke wasn't romanced but Alistair has my HoF out searching for a cure for them, he needs to be there when she gets back.
I just know one thing and that is that spider run miles away from Stroud's finest mustache!

Yeah i can understand that. If it had been Alistair instead of Stroud i wouldn't have been able to leave him either.
But i am(almost completely) sure that we'll get to see hawke again!
No one can really die in Dragon Age.
Corypheus, Leliana, Flemeth (Mythal)...There'll be more of that, I think.
Eh, I'm not too worried about Hawke. Knowing Hawke, s/he will try and romance the Nightmare demon, and it will end up throwing Hawke out of the Fade.
Play to your strengths.

It is interesting that if you leave either character, their death is not a certainty. A probability, but necessarily.
If you have Hawke survive, they go off to Weishaupt and once again disappear. Weisshaupt goes silent. So, nobody knows what's going on up there.

Yup, no matter where they end up something bad seems to happen to them, which is why i think either both will die(very unlikely) or both will survive.
Surviving might be worse though, might end up being possessed by the nightmare!
I remember in Awakening, there was a Pride Demon who was able to go to Thedas from the Fedas because it sacrificed a darkspawn. If this fear demon was as strong, Hawke would make a great sacrifice
My Hawke isn't dead. Nobody 'that' badass can be taken down by a nightmare. Get real.
Even Strouds mustache laughs at such a possibility.
I think we might end up having to fight whoever remains in the fade, possessed by the Nightmare, andwe'll have to put them down!

It would have made more sense to leave Hawke behind to fight such a thing, but I didn't want to take the risk.
On the other hand, the magical "mess-you'll-make"-text states, he's probably going to die. Also at least Stroud is last seen struggling, but not on the defense or even falling.
that is an appropriate response. ![]()
there releasing a DLC about Hawke/Stroud and the Grey Wardens later
