Do yourself a favor and look at the murals in the temples. Red Lyrium is part of a puzzle which we are only just starting to put together.
Who is "we"? Bioware felt meredith needed the insanity excuse for what happened, (in spite of the fanatacism of merediths character throughout the whole of DAII s story, and its not like fanatics need some kind of witchcraft to make them wish for a holocaust to happen) which is where the lyrium came in. Nothing mysterious about it.
