[Deadly dwarf]

Hi.  This is my first Dragon Age game and first RPG period.   I recently completed the game on Normal and am giving it a second go (this time as mage, I was warrior before) to see if I can improve my performance and catch all that I missed the first time. 

 

One of the big lessons that I learned in the second half of the game (after Corytheus revealed himself) was that runes are very important to give you an edge in boss fights.  Before I go into the second half of the game, I wanted to start adding runes early.  Although I have some schematics, fire essence, etc., I can't find any shop in Haven or Val Royeaux that sells the blank rune stones.  Is that something that becomes available only after you move to Skyhold and Dagna the dwarf joins your side?

 

Also regarding Val Royeux, in my first run through of the game, I found a vendor who sold the recipes to all the potions when I was looking for a Heraldry symbol for Josephine.   This time around, I can't find him in the shop he shared with the vendor who sold all the schematics.  Does this "recipes vendor" only appear later in the game after you do some quest?

Blank runes are only available post-skyhold and Dagna, since you have no way of utilizing them beforehand. Other shops like the one next to the schematics shop also only open after Skyhold (and I think more open up even later into the game).

You can craft runs even pre skyhold, there is a merchant in val royauex that sells blank runestones and the fire and frost rune schematic are in hinterlands. the storm one in storm coast.

Which merchant?  I went through all the shops in Val Royeaux and the ones in the Hinterland for good measure and didn't see any.  I wonder if there's some side quest you have to do first?

No, dagna lets you craft masterworks into gear, she has nothing to do with runes.

I dont think theres a special quest, just check every tab of the merchants. If you still cant find it, ill log in for screen shots.

Then why is the quest "Rune Crafting" triggered upon acquiring Dagna? Why is she the one explaining how rune crafting works to the player if it's something that can be done without her? And, lorewise, is the rune system in Inquisition completely different from Sandal's "Enchantment!" since it apparently doesn't require a dwarf or tranquil to work?

Blank runes can be purchased at one of the shops in Val Royeaux. After getting to Skyhold, they can be purchased in Skyhold near the barn. Rune crafting happens only after getting to Skyhold

I double checked the shops at Val Royeaux, the Hinterlands, and Haven with no luck.  Oh well.....I've leveled up enough from doing Hinterlands, Fallow Mire, and the Storm Coast that I should still have an edge going into the Mage/Redcliffe boss fight.

The runestone is in havels shop in VR, one of the 2 merchants spaced near each.

Why would you use a Cold Rune-enchanted weapon to kill a druffalo? They're cold-resistant.

Ah, okay. I figured it out. I think Havel's shop only opens up after completing either "Champions of the Just" or "In Hushed Whispers." I have a save right before doing those with no Havel and a save after doing those with Havel.

Why would you use a Cold Rune-enchanted weapon to kill a druffalo? They're cold-resistant.

Because the druffalo is man's only natural predator.
