I've only taken Vivienne somewhere (besides her personal quest which I randomly got in my first playthrough through absolutely no 'intentional effort' on my part) twice through all my playthroughs. Once in one PT to Halamshiral because it seemed like her speed but that's probably never happening again because why take her when I have Dorian (or Solas, but that super-clipping helmet! I don't understand why they let that go) and once in my first playthrough to the Western Approach because I thought to myself 'Hey! You've never taken Vivienne with you anywhere!' Then, of course, party banter finally fired and it was her sniping at Blackwall over nothing. I fast-traveled back to the camp and rotated her back out for Dorian immediately.

I also hardly ever take Cole anywhere. Not because I don't like Cole, but because someone sneezes in his general direction and he's down for the count. Perhaps if I tried a ranged spec I would have better luck? I think he's darling--though I will admit the fact that he almost always has something to say about everything is a little trying at times. If only because there are moments where I wish that someone would have an opinion about whatever is going on, but either no one has anything to say or I brought Cole and he has something to say about everything. I think it's great Cole has so many opinions, but why can't other people develop some to share? xD

Yes the LEAST

For me. I used companions in regards to the storyline rather then how effective they would be in combat. For example. I keep Sera while doing big story missions because I like her banter. I played the game three times now. Considering a 4th one where I simply complete every side mission out there.

The one person I use the least out of all of them is...

vivivine

While she's a great enchanter and effective in combat. I can't really get into her story.

Who do you often leave out in the cold when picking companions.

Yeah, same here. I tried to use her, give her the benefit of the doubt, but she was exactly the type of personality I can't stand in real life. If I ever play DAI again I won't even bother to recruit her.

Cole and Cassandra are permanent members of my party...

I got the game on Nov 18, and I haven't used Vivienne once. I just don't like her :/ So... I decided I just wouldn't recruit her anymore. After that, I tend to just rotate whoever in as my fourth, depending on the class I play. Everyone except Vivienne gets a fair shot :P

Depends on the character I'm playing as, but my personal preferences goes like this

Warriors: Cassandra > Blackwall > Iron Bull

Mages: Solas > Dorian > Vivienne

Rogues: Varric > Cole > Sera

It's not that I don't like some characters more than others, I actually like every companion (except Sera). It's just when I'm out in the field, I like to choose characters who have insightful things to say. Something intriguing. That's usually not in the expertise of ol' Iron Bull, Vivienne, or Sera.

Though almost everyone gets a fair amount of time. I try not to play favorites. Although I admit I use Sera considerably less than most.. -.-

I barely use Cole.

should try to use him more.

I rotate the mages/warriors around pretty often.

It was the same for me, so I decided to give him a chance.

Then, he made a comment as I was collecting some Summer stone.

"Leeches take as much as they only need."

Back to the tavern attic he goes!

Least used, huh? Mine would be Iron Bull and Blackwall. I tend to use everyone else with some regularity, though the time through t was almost impossible to get me away from Cassandra, Solas, and Cole.

Poor Sera and Blackwall are sitting on my bench, sometimes with Cole and Solas. I only take Blackwall out for his Grey Warden stuff, and Solas for his artifacts (after I explored the region). Sera and Cole are allowed to come out sometimes, but only when I have the heart to leave Varric at Skyhold.

My go to party is: Dorian, Varric and Iron Bull, with Cass and Viv replacing a member when I feel like it. My dragon killing party consists of Viv, Cass and Iron Bull (I exchange Viv's staff).

Vivienne and Dorian are the two that I haven't really had a long for more than a mission or two.

Come to think of it. I didn't even use Blackwall. Or Cole for that matter. Verric most likely the second least picked person I used. He already had his run in DA2. Just seems very odd we can have him as a companion but we can't have morrgian.

Cole never came on any quests at all. I didn't use Vivienne much, but even she went out a little. Blackwall was benched a lot, but he was there for all the darkspawn stuff. Iron Bull didn't go out a lot either. I thought he was an inferior warrior.

My go-to's were Sera, Cassandra, Varric and Dorian in the end.

Didn't use Cole once in my first PT. Him and Iron Bull are my least favourite. They both seem very squishy.

Dorian was often benched. I never take him on any story missions, he usually just does a few sidequests when I'm levelling up characters, then I never take him back until another level up. Can't stand that little brat.

Probably Vivienne. Although I try to mix up my companions as much as possible, she definitely gets chosen the least.

Mine would be Cassandra, dorian and varric and sera. The rest get equal attention from me. I can't understand why most prefer Cass over Blackwall. He's my main tank and a real badass is he on the field. Cass is the most clumsiest warrior I ever encountered in most of my playthroughs. She must get hurt first when running around pinging map and not actually in combat. I can't understand why! And the first to use one of my precious health potions without me directing her. Second is Varric. He is also the clumsiest rogue in most of my playthroughs. They get to stay and bench warm. Dorian gets put on the shelf too cos I just don't get his banter and whinny voice.

Cole

It amused me to pretend the Inquisitor literally forgot about him.

Blackwall, I bought him along for Here Lies the Abyss and if I was heading somewhere with his quest items but that's about it. He fills basically the same role as Cassandra and I like her better. Also Sera because I just don't like her and Dorian because the other Mages are better to me. He can cause panic like nobody business but that just makes the fights take longer and if you use the ability where a dead enemy becomes and ally for a short time you have to wait for it die to close rifts or get it's loot.

Sera, Iron Bull and Cole. Sera's way of speaking and just her presence in general irks me. I love the option of telling her to get her treacherous face out of skyhold. I like the Iron Bull but I never need three warriors in my party. And I never recruit Cole.

I almost never talk to Viv past the haven portion of the game, but I still like bringing her along for fights. Everyone else is okay in my book.

Cole, because the AI is awful with daggers and I already have Varric as my archer.

Blackwall, because I already have Cassandra who is more than adequate for tanking, plus she's way better at dealing out damage while still tank spec'd.

Vivienne, because I already have Solas who I've outfitted a ton before I even recruit her (plus I don't much care for her attitude).

Sera and Blackwall because I don't like them, and already have Varric and Cassandra for a ranged rogue and tank.

Not incredibly fond of Vivienne either, but I do use her for dragon fights sometimes.

I can't understand why most prefer Cass over Blackwall.

First and foremost, I prefer Cassandra over Blackwall because Blackwall is boring. He doesn't actually become a fascinating character until he's chatting with the Inquisitor from behind bars, and he generally does not contribute nearly as much to the story. As I apparently do not suffer from the banter bug, I actually get a good amount of chatter between companions, and I prefer Cassandra's input over his. I've tried to base this all on companion stats/talents in the past, but it just doesn't work. I'm just not very utilitarian when it comes to followers.
