Vivienne, predictably. Never use her.

Sera and Blackwall, too. Strangely enough, Dorian - he's a great character, but with Solas and my mage protagonist, there's just no mage spots in the group, since somebody has to bash walls and open chests.

I take Cassandra and Varric all the time, and Iron Bull and/or Cole when I'm out of banter.

I prefer to play as a mage so, my core team is Iron Bull for a body guard, Cassandra for a tank, and alternating Cole and Varric for my rogue.

I take Dorian on dragons weak to spirit since that's what he's speced for in my game. Solas on the firebreathers since he is my ice mage. I'm the fireball tosser so, don't need another mage if fire will do.

Sera and Vivienne are so annoying that I don't recruit them. All I do is bottom out the approval and, end up booting them, or they simply leave anyway. If for some odd reason I want to be a completionist, then I recruit them and, Sera only goes out for that one she's locked into and Viv never goes out. If I want to enjoy the game, I skip them entirely.

Hardly ever take Iron Bull or Cole - and it suits me tbh I just don't like Cole - too weird.

Core team for my current PT is Vivi, Dorian, Cass and my Archer Quizzy.

I tend to use Vivienne....almost not at all. Mostly because I don't like her banter. She carries her condescension around in an all too one-dimensional way. Her banter with Bull is funny - once.

My core team tends to be Cassandra plus (Dorian or Solas) plus Cole respecced as an archer, but on main plot missions, I take those who I think have most to contribute to the occasion, i.e. Solas and Cole to Adamant, Vivienne and Cassandra to the Winter Palace, Solas to the Arbor Wilds.

Even her more playful banter with Dorian at times seemed a bit too biting to be entertaining at times. Dorian takes it like a good sport, though, and I like that you can respond to it at some point.

Solas and Cassandra are my benchwarmers. Cass can come along sometimes, and some of my quizzies like her and consider as best friend, but I find her a bit boring. I prefer her casual side which comes up more often at home after you get to know her better. I also like how deep she can be, but haven't seen that come up in the field - I'm seriously missing out in case I'm mistaken. Actually I appreciate slowly and carefully thinking personality, but more spontaneous reactions of some others are just so fun, and make more balanced motley crew for my (intentionally) "boring" main character. My less "boring" one adores her yet often replaces her with Blackwall since they're friends too.

Solas, I just can't like him. He's the type that ticks me off, and I'm so rarely ticked off by people or characters that this feels bit odd and not completely pleasant. Solas doesn't seem to really care about people, as they are, and when he gets passionate about something it's a topic I'd rather approach coolly.

I haven't even got a chance to punch him yet. My Cadash is trying to be friendly with him since he's curious about magical stuff, but I felt distant about that relationship. My initial playthrough Lavellan found Solas kinda suspicious, not to mention seeing him practically as rival (because some comments about elfy issues came off rude, and I wanted to be the winter&spirit mage of the group), and ended up acting just mellow with him to keep certain polite distance, but Solas took that as friendship (for the first time being diplomatic in a game felt like a weight to me). Don't know about my Adaar yet at this point, she should fall for Sera and overall not overlap with previous Heralds too much... Maybe she'll take Solas always along to keep an eye on him?

Excellent character but bit distressing to handle for me. :D  Maybe we get a chance to treat him as a villain in future, hopefully. (Or become a villain for him due some dark character developement - I'm apparently not at my best when dealing with him.)

I recruited and kept everyone happy in the first playthrough, because I thought we'd need them at the end  ;)

Second playthrough, I've benched Varric and put Sera in and I'm actually enjoying having her come along.  For some reason I really like it when you try a lock and she says 'just let me do it',  I can just imagine her shoving my Inquisitor out of the way!  In general, my party consists of Cassandra, Solas and Sera/Varric, although I'll drag a party member along if I think the story requires it.  Except Vivienne.

I don't take Cassandra with me much. My Lavellan is a warrior, and I usually bring Iron Bull with me so I don't need any more warriors, sorry Cass.

I don't use Varric or Dorian much either, which is weird because I do like them as characters.

However, I feel like I'm missing out on some good banter, so I might try and bring these less used companions more often!

I'm still trying to use all of them, to hear all possible banter (it's working again, yay!).

But in the future, I see Vivienne, Sera and (sadly) Bull benched pretty much permanently. With Varric and Blackwall often keeping them company.

In my canon Cole.

But I have already planned 2 other playtroughs in order to rotate them

Normally Vivienne is the one I leave behind (don't hate her but I don't like her either) (but for my nightmare playthrough she was a constant member of my group)

Otherwise I'm trying to switch companions as much as I can.

So far, through two PTs, it's been Cole. Never took him on a single mission in the first game -- mostly because I was romancing Sera so she had the rogue's job wherever we went. Second game I was playing a rogue inquisitor, so didn't even recruit Cole. This game things will be different. Playing a warrior this time, so will probably use Cassandra the least, since she's been in probably 90% of my total Inquisition experience to this point.

Of course Sera first, then Inky second, also means Varric stayed home alot as well... but I did take him along on quests a number of times in both games, so he's far from the least used.... uhh, that didn't sound quite right, but I doubt he'll mind.  ;)

Everyone else's time has been divided fairly equally.

Blackwall. I just stopped recruiting him, even in completionist pt where I recruit everyone else. Sometimes I skip recruiting Sera, Vivienne and IB too, but less frequently

Cole, Ironbull.

Although they do contribute in making Nightmare difficulty more challenging.

This!

Cole and Solus, just don't find them engaging. Blackwall is similar but having him in your party along with Cass makes you practically invulnerable. So he's actually useful.

Blackwall, Cole and Dorian.  I take Blackwall on Hawke's mission but that's pretty much it.  I rotate Vivienne and Solas, but Vivienne is my go to mage, and I rotate Sera and Varric.  Usually have Vivienne and Sera together because the banter is funny, especially if you're romancing Sera.

Cole, Iron Bull - AI can't do melee unless tanking

Varric - Much prefer Sera's 1000 cuts, plus his rivallry with Cassandra is getting old.

Blackwall - boring

Dorian - my own personal prejudices

Vivienne - as above.

Vivienne, can't stand her or her banter. She stays in her own little world at Skyhold. The only time I'm with her is when she drags me out.

Cole and Sera, sometimes I rotate out Varric to give him a break from the action.

Solas, once I get Dorian, don't need him in the party.

Cassandra, I actually prefer Blackwall's tanking.

My go to group Varric, IB and/or Blackwall, and Dorian.

Iron bull (unless i reset him to be a sword and shield warrior instead of 2h one)... 2 handed warriors really suck in this game, they are way to slow and die too easy... bonus points because they consume every potion in your inventory if not cared with baby hands.

Vivienne: the only character who hated real Anders as inquisitor... even Sera could handle his flirting all the time... not only that but i find out dorian/solas more usefull when not playing a mage (Solas reseted to use fire magic instead of green and blue one, and Dorian to be a multifunctional mage with green-ice-thunder magic plus his natural necromancer traits)

Sera: storywise... only Anders could bear with her, and that was because how she cried when she was going to be kicked out from inquisition, plus she fits in the rule of no penis plus 2 boobs and 2 feet = hot, however for rping issues no other  inquisitor can handle her.

Cole: as Anders never recruited him (Anders hates spirits for obvious reasons), as other inquisitors he is comming in and out so just as Anders he was left behind...

Vivienne, like most people I didn't actually dislike her...but my Quizzy is generally a mage and her competition was Solas and Dorian for a place in the team.  So yeah, she didn't stand much of a chance.  Oh yes and Varric, I mean he was ok...but I much preferred Cole or even Sera.

Blackwall and Bull were a bit, eh in terms of use, but I had them in on and off.

My favourites were generally Dorian, Solas, Cole and Sera.  The rest were rotated around where I could.

Almost never use Vivienne -- only recruit her for the KE spec if I'm playing a mage, usually.  Otherwise I don't even bother recruiting her, or if I do, pretty much leave her alone in her loft.

Cass is pretty much my tank all the time, though I sometimes respec IB as board & sword if I want to shake things up.  Depends on my Quizzy's class, though.

Don't bring Cole much if I'm a rogue or warrior -- I usually rotate him in as a mage, though.

Liked Blackwall on my first play-through, but after seeing his full story, I pretty much only bring him out for his personal missions.

and Dorian because the other Mages are better to me. He can cause panic like nobody business but that just makes the fights take longer and if you use the ability where a dead enemy becomes and ally for a short time you have to wait for it die to close rifts or get it's loot.

Switch to Dorian and use the spirit mark ability again.  It -should- be glowing if there is an active dead enemy lingering around.  Selecting it again will make them croak... a second time... immediately.  It's like walking bomb in that regard.  You don't -have- to wait for them to die to blow up.  Simply select it again while and they take a chunk of damage.

So yeah, if that's the main reason you don't want Dorian, you're missing out on a lot of priceless banter for no reason :)

That depends on which spirit mark - he has two of the same ability in the necro tree. One can be canceled, one cannot.
