This time I might bring Varric. It feels like its kinda forced as you as a companion.

Usually Blackwall and Iron Bull. Nothing against them, but I usually only have one warrior in the party and that's (almost) always Cassandra.

I switched her out in favour of Bull when romancing him, will do the same with Blackwall. At some point, I'll have the warriors together so I can hear their banters. It's just a lower priority.

Sera, and Iron Bull, and a special shout out to Viv who I tend to forget was even in the game at all.

Varric, Vivienne, and Iron Bull. Varric is way more boring than in DA2. I can't stand Vivienne, and I don't know how to make Iron Bull not a sack of wet tissue paper in fights.

Varric, almost never except for stuff related to his character like Valammar. Vivienne unless I am playing a Chantry upholding, righteous inky. Iron Bull - whom I love. I make the guy the best gear, I set up with the defensive abilities, guard generating abilties/procs and tell him to follow himself, or be definsive on himself and he still chugs potions. I know some people have made him work, I just can't.

Vivienne.  Because even if she wasn't boring and pretentious, her model is still sooooo painful for me to look at.  Her head is so painfully small compared to the size of her torso and just...no. I have tried to bring her along, and let the entire group wear hats so she is more balanced but I can't do it.  If she were a more sincere less self-serving person, her model wouldn't bother me but as she is....I can't do it.

Blackwell stays home.  I try not to use him period, his cutscene walk (aka diaper shuffle) is too ... diaper-shuffly.  And they used it for a cutscene for Cullen too.  (sorry cullen, Just...no.  )

Varric tends to stay home, though he is great for banter sometimes.  I can handle Sera in small doses.

Having your group stand afar from dragons in either Hard or Nightmare is nothing but a death sentence, though. It's impossible to make it into safe "eye of the storm" range from the brief tell you get before they do their wing-flappy-move, which basically says "you do not kite".

Not gonna argue the AI isn't really doing anything but spam skills and follow your main character, I merely felt obnoxious enough to point out the above :]

There was this perfect spot in those ruins where you fight the Crestwood dragon where the ranged characters could shoot but be partially behind a wall and protected from the flap(it worked for my controlled character) but the non controlled party member (Varric) wouldn't stay there or even near there and would run right into the fray and get killed over and over again. If something is getting my characters killed, I should be able to come up with a strategy to avoid that and the AI should freaking do what I tell it to do

Dorian. Every time he opens his mouth he either makes a hilarious sarcastic remark or talks about being gay, gets kind of irritating after a while.

Iron Bull for gameplay reasons, Cole for... being weird and not interesting, I guess?

Vivienne.

I normally use the starting 4 during story missions, and mix-n-match during side quests.

Vivienne, Varric, Blackwall and Sera.

Varric probably gets the least usage, though.  I don't think the DA2--->DAI transition did him any favors; found him a bit boring.

Vivienne, Blackwall, Sera & Bull

I never take Vivienne with me, I actually stopped recruiting her. The only time Blackwall was a permanent member of my team was in my nightmare run. And I only take Sera with me for the banter (if I have any). Same with Bull, even if I love him, but I use Cassandra as my tank.

Usually I switch between Solas/Cassandra/Cole & Varric. Dorian is always with me in the field.

The best advice I have seen if you haven't done it already is to set in the behaviours tab:

Ranged NPC to defend themselves

Tanks to follow themselves.

You may have to frequently trigger "Y" on the keyboard to make the ranged followers attack.

Make sure you also check what spells and abilities they have enabled.

Blackwall and Vivienne, although Vivienne is funny alongside Blackwall because I like her remarks about his intelligence.

Sera, Solas, Blackwall and Iron Bull. Hardly used them after getting to Skyhold. Not a fan of the first three, though I've never really tried out Iron Bull so I can't say.

I don't recall Dorian talking about being gay much at all, except during his personal quest and the follow-up dialogue at Skhold. When does it ever come up again?

"I'm too pretty to die",.....

" I'm so sexy thay I like showing my buttocks to everyone"...

"Haha, I could do that all day"

"What a lovely forest. Kind of makes you want to retch, yes?"

"Reminds me of the public baths in Minrathous... but cooler."

Then you have this with Ironbull

Bull:  Nice work with the magic back there, Dorian. You're pretty good at "blowing up" guys.

Dorian: It's significantly more impressive than hitting them with a "sharp piece"

Bull: Hey, whoa, let's not get crazy.

Those words are too gayly for my ears. You can't think differently when you hear it.  Even in Dorian's thread everything ( love appreciation, photos, art  etc.) is about sex, sex, sex.

I don't play the game anymore, so oh well. (I always made sure they had no short range spells and abilities though)

I never used Iron Bull once the entire game. I think I only talked to him 3 times. Once after I recruited him, the next that cutscene in the tavern when his friends start singing, and finally the one where you hit him with a stick.
