Why bother with anything but mages in a party?

I just started playing multiplayer, been about 3-4 days. I'm new, and i can already see the glaring issues with balance.

So far I got an Archer, Arcane Warrior, Elementalist and Katari to level 20.

As an Arcane Warrior and Elementalist...Perilous was an absolute joke for a team of mages. Groups in zones 1-4 drop in 5-10 seconds. I have some level 18 grey staff with a master spirit rune on it and the same original armor, no rings, no amulet, no belt. All mage party, who needs a warrior? Who needs a rogue really? Mages are masters of AOE and have the best team aoe/utilities (barrier, firestorm, static cage, pull of the abyss, etc) and this game in it's current state is nothing but AoEing over and over. If you can't aoe, pff, don't bother coming in perilous.

Katari...wow, I love the look and style of two-hander, i played single player all the way with 2 different characters as two handed warriors...but man, they're lacking in every department in comparison to the mages.

I even had a technically better weapon on my Katari (blue with % unbowed on hit) than my arcane warrior (grey weapon)

-To the Death is a non-passive activated skill...which is (sort of?) a warrior's version of Fade Shield, except it sucks in comparison because it's on a cooldown and it takes up an ability slot, but it does give a significant damage boost to the zone 5 boss, that's it. Damage bonus is kinda moot otherwise due to things dieing in 5-10 seconds. Fade Shield is much better because it's always on, makes you invulnerable in packs of enemies and doesn't take up an ability slot.

-Shield Wall/Block and Slash - This makes me sad. Another skill to "build" guard that takes up a slot. These skills are useless to me because my damage has to stop while i activate these plus it makes you a sitting duck more or less, the guard gained is usually just negated for being an idiot sitting still in the battle field. Again, Fade Shield...it's passive, doesn't take up a skill slot, this does.

-Barrier is just flat out stronger than guard. To have it passively regenerate when Warriors have no such equivalent skill (they're supposed to be the melee combat masters, they're not)

-Fade Step: LOL. NO MANA COST EVADE on short cooldown, hahaha. Warriors are crying.

There is no reason to take warriors into Perilous. My all mage party was the best Perilous run I ever had, and it was just some PUG.

And also, when there is a perilous run with NO MAGES...LOL. Have fun with that in a PUG...unless you're super organized over voice chat or have super sweet gear/stats. Low geared Mage team > low geared Warriors/Rogues

Strangely, a number of posts lately have attempted to claim that either all classes are balanced, or that balance isn't something that should be a concern. I suspect your experience is a much more common take on the current state of things.

Pffft, Assassin master class FTW! They do have kind of a steep learning curve but, once you know what to do and how to do it they can murder any enemy in 8 seconds or less( this includes bosses on perilous difficulty ).

Fine, Assassin, go AFK for Zones 1-4, then Zone 5, kill the boss. Thanks but i rather have more AoE.

Breaking news: Mages OP!

Wait... not news? Old since day one DAMP? Dang. I sure hope BW fixes that...  3 months later... here's a bunch of bug fixes. I like that... but warriors + rogues QQ @ low gear / level / no coordination.

I promote doing this.

Haha, no! I don't do that at all and 90% of the time I outscore mages.

Perilous is easy mode for me as a mage in white/grey gear with no rings. Everything dies in 5-10 seconds except Zone 5. I've been playing for 3 days now? Don't have any epic gear at all. Promoted my 3 classes once each? What now? LOL

Maybe you got lucky with really strong groups. A well-played, leveled and coordinated group in perilous can make the world of difference, because trust me- all mage groups can still wipe.

That being said, there are only certain classes I'll even bother taking into Perilous- elementalist, keeper, hunter and arcane warrior.  With the others, I feel like I might be a detriment to my group.  Not sure if it's a problem with the classes or I just suck playing them in perilous.

Probably a combination of both.   :)

Lol, all mages, and 1 ranged. No warrior needed. Bioware should of given Barrier to Warriors, it makes more sense. Mages have plenty of utlity/dps.

I have a dream...that one day I'll be in a team with 3 Archers and 1 Keeper. Effectively 0 cooldown Long Shots detonating Static Cage. It will be the most glorious pewpew the world has ever witnessed.

We should make this dream happen! Everyone sync their chrono units for maximum pew!

Mages have the lowest requirement for gear, and generally suit new players better. However, as you get better gear, some rogue or warrior classes can bring far superior DPS.

Stronger DPS becomes irrelevant when all enemies in zone 1-4 die in very short times anyhow in lower gear. The utility and extra survivability from barrier outweigh the marginally superior dps.

Admittedly, if you have a proficient Barrier caster, even if your team isn't perfectly organized, you can roll Archers and Reavers/Assassins for increased damage. Of course, that's a big IF.

Sigh, why does it always come down to me thinking Barrier needs nerf, and Guard needs buff?

Legionnaire is an unkillable wall of taunt, Reaver used to be a damage machine (now she's a damage machine that breaks after 4 seconds), Templar has +35% damage for your whole party and a killer AoE combo.  Katari has issues.

Assassin is pretty good once you get to the point with gear where you can chain stealth kills and can kill the boss hilariously fast, Archer is ridiculous ranged DPS (Long Shot Yo), Hunter is a flippin' ninja with a shotgun.  Alchemist has issues.

But yeah, Keepers, Arcane Warriors, and Elementalists can do a lot of things very well all at the same time.  Their ability to Tank, Crowd Control, and AoE all at the same time makes a lot of other classes extremely envious.  Plus access to the best safety net in the game (Guardian Spirit) and the best evasion talents (Fade Cloak/Fade Step) means they are supremely versatile without sacrificing any power.

Best group compositions:

3X AW, Keeper/Elementalist

2X AW, Elementalist, Keeper

AW, Elementalist, Keeper, Keeper

AW, Elementalist, Elementalist, Keeper

You know what, any of the combination of the above is top notch. Barrier rocks.

I would hardly call five-seven thousand damage in a single strike marginally superior.

Necromancer just called. She sounded very upset. It's true that she often wonders out loud why she comes here, but being the only 1 of 12 to not be mentioned hurts even the coldest spirit. Mark.

Why use anything other than TGI in ME3? Fun maybe? Because you'll never get any better at the game if you only use easy mode classes? Because AW and Ele are kinda boring if played for more than 2-3 matches at a time?

Necromancer doesn't bring the ridiculous safety that the other 3 classes bring.

Sure, she has Death Siphon (which is AMAZING) and Simulacrum, which is a fair amount of safety, but she's the only Mage that doesn't get Guardian Spirit AND the only Mage with no way to reliably generate barrier (Yes, technically Mind Blast. But no.).

So while the Necromancer can tank effectively on Routine and is still pretty safe on Threatening, on Perilous things do so much damage that Death Siphon doesn't even get a chance to heal you.  Plus things taking longer to die really cuts into your healing.  Meanwhile Arcane Warrior is constantly generating barrier, Elementalist get Death Siphon AND Barrier, and Keeper has Barriers for days.  Also they all get a second chance for Heal on Kill/Death Siphon to work via Guardian Spirit.  Meanwhile you go into Ghost form for 10 seconds and then fall over.

Now don't take this the wrong way.  I love my Necromancer and Walking Bomb is one of the funnest/best spells in the game.  But she realistically is not on the same level as the other 3.  Still good, still strong, but not THAT strong.

Same can be said about any class. I understand that every class has mechanics that make them fun but balance is totally different from that. Why have ez mode classes...Every class should feel solid in comparison to others in battle.

I would be happy if they created a new difficulty mode called "MAGE PERILOUS": A higher difficulty designed for OP mages where all enemies are actually challenging for them.
