As the title states, who did you take during the main quests of the game? Why did you take them? Knowing the alternatives (either from other playthroughs or seeing them online) do you wish you would've taken another companion?

Here is who I took and knowing what I know post-game, who I would've swapped;

1) In Hushed Whispers

**Dorian's not-optional**

-Cassandra

-Sera

Swap Sera with Iron Bull

Wish I could've swapped Sera for either Solas or Iron Bull. They have the most intriguing dialogue/insight in this quest. But I needed a rogue and figured Sera would be fun for the quest, boy was I wrong. All she did was whine and whimper the whole time...something she does the entire game.

2) In Your Heart Shall Burn

-Cassandra

-Vivienne

-Sera

Another case where I thought Sera, of all people, would be down for rescuing all the workers caught in the chaos of this mission. Also a weird bug with Vivienne, she makes such rude and disgusting comments about leaving the injured workers behind and saving yourselves, then when you do actually rescue them she says "done doing errands?" really bitchy-like. But then you get approval from her...I don't understand. It's a bug, and one that hindered my immersion. Definitely wish I hadn't taken her.

Swap Vivienne with Solas

Swap Sera with either Blackwall or Varric

3) Here Lies the Abyss

-Cassandra

-Blackwall

-Varric

Only gripe I have with this is knowing that Blackwall was bullshitting the whole time, I don't think he deserves to participate in this quest. I took him purely because of his relevancy to the Wardens, but turns out he was irrelevant after all. And to think that Blackwall had the honor of being one of the few to physically go through the Fade and survive...wasted potential.

Swap Blackwall with Solas

4) Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts

-Cassandra

-Vivienne

-Sera

I actually have no complaints, they all had interesting perspectives and things to say. Sera was actually useful for once, having a personal quest that benefits the Inquisitor. Very nice.

5) What Pride Had Wrought

-Cassandra

-Solas

-Cole

No complaints. This was an optimal team combination, especially Solas.

6) Doom Upon All the World

-Cassandra

-Solas

-Varric

Our first team, my favorite team. Excellent characters that have been fighting Corypheus since the start, very fitting. Especially the twist with Solas at the end. For a while I debated between taking Dorian or Varric, as both have personal beef with Corypheus, but figured it'd be more fitting to have Varric slay him AGAIN :)

Overall, I was pretty happy with my original party combinations for my first playthrough. Just Sera and Vivienne annoyed me a lot. And yes, I do have favoritism/bias over Cassandra and Solas. Excellent characters.

I took Cassandra on all quests. I don't recall who went on what quest since I used them all at some point in the playthrough

The reason I kept Cassandra the whole time was for her toughness in combat

I was happy with who I picked the first time although I've taken different folks in my next two games. Funny thing that I rarely use Varric in game 2 and 3 (playing now) and probably won't use him much in the future. For my first game, I wanted it to be with Cass (who got things rolling), Varric (who was in DA2 and knew Hawke) and Solas (who I knew has some mysterious something going on). Now I like to use Blackwall, Cole, and Dorian in a lot of my game and rarely use Viv, Iron Bull, or Varric.

First run was :

Cassandra, Varric, and Solas the entire way through.   Don't regret it one bit.   In fact, I kind of miss them on my later playthroughs where I try to mix up the characters a bit more.

I took Blackwall to Adamant because he was a warden and boy was I disappointed  :(  He doesn't say anything except for the option to convince the wardens that the inquisitor can also do herself. I was really sorry I didn't take Cassandra that was my usual warrior in the party especially when she regrets she hasn't seen the fade later.

I took Vivienne to the masked ball because she was familiar with the court and I thought she would have some insight and really shine in this quest... but she just leaned against a table the whole time. I was really surprised when I found out that the one companion with the extra quest at the ball was Sera  :o  Who in their right mind would take Sera to fancy diplomatic parties

Cassandra, Varric, and Solas remains my absolute favorite party combination in the game.

Any chance I get its always Varric, Solas and Cass for me out on the field and Cullen romanced. I wouldn't have it any other way, other then maybe Blackwall some more but that means leaving Cass at home.

I found it hard to choose. I really liked the idea of having the four races of Thedas in the party, which is easier to manage as a Qunari-PC. I adore Cassandra and Sera, plus I love the idea that Varric is just cataloguing everything first hand for another book.

Here's what I did on my first playthrough (Female Elf mage):

1) In Hushed Whispers

**Dorian's not-optional**

-Cassandra

-Varric

2) In Your Heart Shall Burn

-Cassandra

-Varric

-Solas

3) Here Lies the Abyss

-Blackwall

-Varric

-Solas

Switch Blackwall with Cassandra.

Cassandra's dialogue in Skyhold after the quest makes me wish I brought her. Learning the truth about Blackwall's identity made me regret bringing him even more.

4) Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts

-Cassandra

-Vivienne

-Varric

Switch Vivienne with Dorian.

I thought bringing Vivienne would be best because it's Orlais and we're playing The Game.

Additionally, I did not know my entire party would be forced to wear you-know-what. It looks much better on Dorian than Vivienne.

5) What Pride Had Wrought

-Cassandra

-Varric

-Solas

6) Doom Upon All the World

-Cassandra

-Varric

-Solas

Well... there's not much variety here. :P

I used Cass because she's the most interesting warrior, Varric because he's Varric, and Solas because romance :crying:.

(I used the other companions on side quests)

I think I did well enough for my first. My party was usually Dorian, Solas, and Cole (I was a warrior) so between them I got a lot of interesting information about Tevinter, magic history, elves, the Fade, spirits... and emotions tied to everything to boot.

Subsequent playthrough feels empty and like stumbling around in comparison.

My first PT was as a mage and I had Blackwall, Solas and Cole.

The first time having Cole in my party, I didn't care to have him. It had nothing to do with his character. It was the fact that -- as I found out with all melee classes unless they are tanks -- he was squishy.

Blackwall is always my tank. I think only once did I ever do a PT where he wasn't (Turned Bull into a tank for one PT when I was romancing for party banter). I prefer his tank spec over Cassandra's.

And Solas was just a nice edition for a second mage and elven lore. Only once did I replace him with Dorian and like Bull becoming tank it was because I was romancing him.

Other than Cole being squishy, over all I was happy with my party. I learned a lot of elven lore and history, about spirits and learned more about areas and people I visited. Another reason I liked having Cole in the party was because I have been interested in his character ever since reading Asunder. When I found out he was supposed to be a companion for DAI, I was excited. So I got to learn more about him and the way he thinks.

This is my group make-up whenever I play a mage, I just turn Cole into an assassin archer.

Whenever I play as a rogue my party is always Blackwall, Solas and Dorian

Not often do I change my party for quests.

I inadvertently brought the 3 most relevant companions to Adamant in Here Lies The Abyss, the first time: Blackwall, Varric and Solas. Blackwall and Varric were obvious choices, but I never expected to go to the Fade, and that Solas would have information regarding the place. Cassandra is another option, but I've yet to bring her.

I also brought the 3 most appropriate companions to Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts. Cassandra, Vivienne and Sera. Cass and Vivi are the only ones that get an introduction when you enter the Grand Hall, and Sera is the only companion that gets you an extra quest.

I had Varric, Dorian and Solas for What Pride Had Wrought. Solas because that's what the guide book suggested, Varric because well, I don't know, and Dorian because of Calpernia being from Tevinter.

Had Cassandra, Varric and someone else, possibly Solas for Doom Upon All The World. All I know for sure is I brought Cassandra, and I'm pretty sure I brought Varric. Whoever it was, the party wasn't because it's my main party, or some tripe like that.

Had Bull, Cole and Solas or somebody in From The Ashes, because I wanted to use Cole and I hadn't used Iron bull much.

This was my first game. Still doing #2.

Redcliffe Mages: Cassandra / Vivienne / Dorian

Haven: Cassandra / Solas / Varric

Adamant: Blackwall / Varric / Solas

Winter Palace: Cassandra / Vivienne / Varric

Arbor Wilds: Cassandra / Solas / Varric

Final Battle: Cassandra / Solas / Varric

I regret taking Blackwall to Adamant over Cassandra. This is a metagame choice, but Cassandra interacting spirit Justinia > Blackwall  interacting with wardens.

I regret taking Varric to Adamant over anyone else. I think the cutscene of returning from the fade works better without him being in the party, and plus he doesn't freak out nearly as much as I thought a dwarf would in the fade. I started taking Dorian in place of him.

I regret taking Cassandra over Dorian at the Winter Palace. Cassandra is pretty miserable during all of it fi you aren't romancing her, and Dorian seems to enjoy it quite a bit. I just have Vivienne or myself tank with Knight Enchanter.

But other than that I was pretty content with my choices. I wish I could work Cole in somewhere, but I don't have the heart to take him to Adamant. Bull and Sera are my for fun companions. They get all the dragon kills and sidequesting lol.

I played a Qunari, and she was a Knight enchanter.

Redcliffe: Cassandra, Sera, Dorian

Haven: Cassandra, Sera, Varric

Adamant: Blackwall, Sera, Varric

Winter palace: Cassandra, Sera, Varric

Arbor wilds: Cassandra, Sera, Varric

The last battle: Cassandra, Sera, Varric

I don't have many regrets, and I guess it is easy to see who my favourite companions were. Cassandra because I find her adorable and awesome, Sera because she's funny and was my love interest, and Varric because he makes everybody else funnier. The only one might be Blackwall for the Adamant bit. Knowing everything, it was not as exciting a choice as it could have been, but at the time I felt he deserved to come along. Same with Varric; if Hawke's there he should be too.

For main quests it was usually Dorian, Solas and Cassandra.. My character was a rogue archer so no other rogues ever seemed necessary to take along.

For just running about I tried my best to use companions I kept forgetting. .. but still, varric, ghost boy and sera got very little use other than their side quests.

Best party for me seemed to be two mages and a fighter. Didn't really matter which fighter or which two mages... but it seemed in my playthrough that solas, dorian and cassandra had some really fun banter, so I kept using them.

I liked Varric for Adamant. He had cool dialogue with both Hawke and the Nightmare Demon.

Definitely regret taking Blackwall though *sigh* BioWare you deceiving bastards

When playing games I tend to wing it, with a small aside on who may be good for the next part.

I couldn't write an essay on it like.

My first playthrough... yeah, I remember. Maybe.

In Hushed Whispers: no regrets, went exactly the way I wanted

- Dorian, Blackwall, Varric

In Your Heart Shall Burn: no regrets, apart from wishing I'd figured out how to save villagers, but that was my fault, not my followers'

- Blackwall, Varric, Dorian

Here Lies the Abyss: no regrets (notice a pattern?)

- Blackwall, Varric, Dorian (notice a pattern?)

Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts: no regrets

- Blackwall, Varric, Dorian

What Pride Has Wrought: no regrets

- Blackwall, Solas, Dorian (Inquisitor Cadash was a DW rogue)

Doom Upon the World: BIGTIME regrets, wish I'd brought anybody but Solas

- Blackwall, Varric, Solas

Solas was kitted out in my best gear. Now, and always in the future, I'll bring somebody else and strip him down before we leave.

My standard party for running around and doing quests varied a lot more, but I didn't take Cole out much. As a DW assassin herself, Cadash didn't see much point in bringing another.

Um, I mix matched and really had no complaints. I didn't bring either Dorian or Solas to Mythal, which is a thing I try to do in all other playthroughs, they are just the best in that quest both of them.

I also always bring Blackwall in the warden missions, I don't let metaknowledge change that decision. I also always Bring Varric although his interaction with Hawke is much more sparse than I had hoped.

Cassandra was the tank on every mission but Adamant, I was under the mistaken impression that bringing a Warden to that mission would mean something.  I was wrong.

Vivienne was the mage for all the story mission.

The 3rd spot rotated between Sera, Varric and Iron Bull. Once Sera got Thousand Cuts it was pretty much her at the end.
