Think back to your first playthrough, who did you take during the main quests? Do you wish you took someone else?

It was kinda funny because after almost every mission I'd get a cut scene talking about how I should have brought companion x along because they would have liked to see location x
I just wanted to add that Dorian does have some nice banter for/with Abelas in what pride had wrought if you ever get around to bringing him. I do remember bringing him along on that quest the first time.
And also- this was more a second playthrough and not totally relevant to the quest the way Solas is to here lies the abyss or what pride had wrought but IB is cool to bring on wicked eyes wicked hearts because he can give you his Ben-hasserath read on things. Varric is neat to because apparently orlesians love "Hard in Hightown".

It was Cass, Varric and Solas. Never thought of switching them out.
I've a niggling question and rather than opening a new post, I'll just drop it here. Whose troops was Cass in charge of at the beginning of DAI? She mentioned leaving the Seekers for precipitating the war against the mages so those were not soldiers that belonged to the order. Is it a mix? Would be templars, seekers, ordinary soldiers from which ever nobility that sustained Haven?

Doom Upon the World: BIGTIME regrets, wish I'd brought anybody but Solas
- Blackwall, Varric, Solas
Solas was kitted out in my best gear. Now, and always in the future, I'll bring somebody else and strip him down before we leave.
snip
Towards the end of the game, I pretty much let Solas run around nekked, since he takes off with my stuff. ![]()

I always Take Sera with me everywhere , The only one who was useless was Varric . Hawke act like he isn't even there .
Then Took BW and Cass to meet with the warden , Thinking Cass will go Bonker and ask the champion questions . But nope . dragging BW to hear him spit Lie was a waste as well .

So no. I don't wish to change my combination. Though I have used other characters for later play throughs I did really enjoy that group.

Male human mage who romanced Cassandra, so I took her on all quests except for Cole's personal quests, for the obvious reason that your team is picked for you.
Gull and the Lantern: Vivienne and Solas. (and Dorian at the Chantry, technically)
Champions of the Just: Varric and Solas. (and Cole, technically)
Heartburn: Vivienne and Solas.
Wicked Eyes/Hearts: Vivienne and Blackwall.
Here Lies the Abyss: Varric and Blackwall.
What Pride had Wrought: Viviene and Solas. (Wish I'd taken Sera instead of Vivienne, but I did take Sera to the other elven temples.)
The Final Piece (Morrigan drank, no Kieran): Varric and Solas.
Doom Upon All the World: Dorian and Blackwall.
I also cleared the areas with other companions, and rotated the teams fairly evenly. Same with the dragon fights.
Fereldan Frostback: Vivienne and Blackwall.
Abyssal High Dragon: Solas and The Iron Bull.
Sandy Howler: Sera and Dorian.
Northern Hunter: Vivienne and The Iron Bull.
Kaltenzhan: Varric and Dorian.
Hivernal: Solas and Blackwall.
Highland Ravager: Vivienne and Cole.
Vinsomer: Sera and Cole.
Gamordan Stormrider: Sera and Solas.
Greater Mistral: Varric and Cole.
Red Lyrium Dragon: Dorian and Blackwall.
Personal quests:
Sera's: The Iron Bull.
Dorian's: Did not get letter from Mother Giselle.
Varric's: Dorian. (Maybe wish I'd taken Solas now that I know the ending, though it probably doesn't matter)
Cassandra's: Cole and Solas.
Blackwall's: Varric and Vivienne.
Cole's: Varric and Solas (forced).
Vivienne's: Just her (forced).
Solas': Cole.
The Iron Bull's: Cole.
Also took companions who seemed to match certain themes best. Such as Dorian going to the time frozen temple and the Temple of Dumat. Or Sera and Solas going to the elven temples and ruins. Took Varric and The Iron Bull to track down Calpernia's contact in Val Royeaux. Took Sera and Dorian to the Hissing Wastes to fight Vints, and also the connection between Sera and the mysterious Chantry sister who vanishes and leaves the special bow behind for her. Took Cole through Crestwood to give clues on the Mayor's connection to the past, as well as the spirits that roam Old Crestwood. That kind of stuff.

I took Sera and Cassandra on every quest and chose all other characters in turn (one) .
It worked out well.

My first Inquisitor [created on early EA Access day] was a female Dalish rogue (archer). While I spent some time with all nine companions, for the most part my squad consisted of Blackwall, Iron Bull, and Dorian. They were my "go to" guys!
I initially attempted a romance with Solas, but grew weary of how little progress that endeavor evidenced. I shifted my affections over to Sera, and despite her yen for a Qunari, I rather quickly won her over. Sera was a lot of fun!

Cassandra, Varric and Vivienne were my golden trio in the first playthrough.
But to be brutally honest on hindsight...
Should've switched Viv with Dorian, but by the time he joined the feast (pretty late too as I did the Templar quest), Viv was already wearing proper gear/skilled and I was too lazy to switch all of that to Dorian.
Plus for some reason I don't like to make Dorian a barrier/protect/white mage. I think he should be the destruction/power/arcane/red/black mage.
Dorian, IB and Solas for my 2nd playthrough was a pretty fun experience as well tho ;D

My first play through was the one where I was most likely to use all the characters randomly because I didn't really know them that well. But I do not remember who I took where. I'm old. Heh. I will say that once I got Dorian I took him most everywhere and continue to take him most everywhere as my go to mage and BFF fo lyfe because he is awesome.

I like bringing people depending on the amount of dialogue they can offer. So these were my teams during major quests.
In hushed whispers: Blackwall and Varric (the conversation with Blackwall later really moves me "then I was worth something in the end".
In your heart shaw burn: Cassandra, Varric and Vivienne.
Here lies the abyss: Blackwall, Varric and Solas.
Wicked eyes and wicked hearts: Cassandra, Vivienne and Sera
What pride has wrought: Cassandra, Cole and Solas
Doom upon all the world: Varric (round two!), Blackwall and Solas.

I pretty much used Cassandra, Varric and Solas for the most part in the campaign in my first playthrough, with the exception of Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts, where I brought Vivienne along instead of Solas.

Took Varric, Cassandra, and Solas through pretty much ever mission in the first playthrough. Don't regret it one bit. In fact, later playthroughs where I have chosen different companions have been less than stellar without them.

On my first playthrough, honestly, I just used Solas, Varric, and Blackwall the whole time (save for the very beginning with Cass over Blackwall before I recruited him, and Solas got left behind during In Hushed Whispers). In hindsight, this was sort of dumb, as Blackwall is probably my least favorite companion, and Solas in generally gives me violent urges.
Still, at least for Adamant, that was a pretty good party. Blackwall gets to pretend he's a Warden, Solas gets to be dramatic in the fade, and Varric gets to be dramatic about Hawke (though Hawke lived against Stroud, so there wasn't any super drama there). Everywhere else... meh.
Cass and Cole are also good choices for the Fade; she gets some closure, and he gets terrified. I didn't think of them as having much to do with Wardens, though, so I wouldn't have thought to bring them first time.

Solas in generally gives me violent urges.
I'm afraid to ask, but why does he of all people give you violent urges? He's the wise and sage master of the fade who just happens to be the greatest trickster in all of Thedas. Sure he's made some pretty bad mistakes, but he's also been fully committed to helping the Inquisition every way he could.

Champions of the Just
Cassandra
Varric
Solas
I think Vivienne might have been a better choice
In Your Heart Shall Burn
Blackwall
Vivienne
Varric
I like these choices
Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts
Cassandra
Vivienne
Sera
I can never find all of the Red Jenny stashes, so Sera might not be the best choice
Here Lies the Abyss
Blackwall
Solas
Cole
I might not take Cole next time, but the other rogues don't make sense
What Pride Had Wrought
Iron Bull
Solas
Varric
IB wasn't very useful, and I might want to take Sera to see how she reacts to "elfy"
Doom Upon the World
Cassandra
Vivienne
Varric

I tend to stick with two mages, warrior, and a rogue in my party. So usually Cassandra, Dorian/Solas/Inquisitor, Cole/Sera/Inquisitor. Sometimes I'll cycle someone in, or I'm forced to take someone else

In Hushed Whispers
Dorian
Varric
Iron Bull
It was an ok group, don't have a warrior/rogue that feels more important to bring. Only character I would want to bring as well was Solas, but then I'd have 3 mages...
In Your Heart Shall Burn
I don't remember. Didn't really matter anyways, don't think there was any special dialog...
Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts
Iron Bull
Vivienne
Varric
Should have left Viv at home - I thought she'd be more useful/interesting here than she was, and bringing her cost me my dance with Solas. I also never found Varric to talk to him....so I'd say I would have swapped Viv and Varric for Solas and Cole.
Here Lies the Abyss
Blackwall
Dorian
Cole
Would have swapped Dorian for Solas
What Pride Had Wrought
Solas
Dorian
Cassandra
Was generally happy, by this point I realized '**** it, I'm going with 3 mages cos I want both Solas and Dorian around." If anything, I've heard Cole was interesting, so maybe I would swap Dorian with Cole...
Doom Upon the World
Cassandra
Dorian
Solas
Maybe wouldn't bring Solas in the future so he can't run off with my stuff....but then again he wears my elf mage's hand-me-downs and its not like anyone else can use that...

I played a male human rift mage my first time. Playing a female dwarf rogue second time, no spec yet, debating assassin or artificer. I don't have any regrets. I'll run different groups every pt. I honestly don't have perfect memory of who I took, but this is best I remember. A lot of it kinda got drowned in all the sidequests. I don't remember Cass (or anybody other than Quizzy really) having more to say with Justinia than anybody else, for instance. This is also out of order for my playthrough. ><
Redcliffe Castle: Dorian, Blackwall, Varric
Picked Blackwall and Varric as the "I smell an ambush" team. I was wary of bringing Sera because of the trailer. Thought they worked well.
Orlais first time: Cassandra, Varric, Solas
Traded out for Sera, Vivienne, Varric as I recruited the ladies. I took Cole to Orlais a lot with Sera and either Vivi, Cass, or Varric.
Haven: Cassandra, Sera, Varric
Didn't need another mage, so I brought my boss warrior plus archers for flexibility. Varric and Sera were also my Inquisitor's best buds at the time, along with Solas. edit: Wait, think I brought Blackwall instead of Cass, and then Cole? Don't remember if I got control of him before or after. I didn't rely on warriors all the time.
Adamant: Blackwall, Cassandra, Varric
My all-diplomacy team, since I'd already recruited half the wardens as mission prep. And I wanted Varric running with Hawke as much as possible.
Winter Palace: Cassandra, Vivienne, Sera
The people most used to Orlesian noble society. Yes, that includes Sera. The highlights were Morrigan and Josephine, continuing her romance.
Arbor Wilds: Solas, Sera, and I think it was Cole
This was really all about the elves and Morrigan. I didn't take a tank, which made the boss fight.. Well honestly, Samson just dragged out. I wouldn't say it was tougher. I used Dagna's advantage to handicap his armor, and it still took forever to bring him down.
Final Battle: Blackwall, Solas, Sera
All-bad*ss team. The group that became my most effective foursome over the course of the game. Dorian might've upgraded Solas, but I wanted Solas for story reasons. I didn't know the ending yet.
Dragon battles: (more than not) Iron Bull, Sera, Dorian or Vivienne
Iron Bull probably got the least run; he was just my least favorite character to have tagging along. I took him on four or five dragon battles though, out of six or seven I found.
