Is anyone actually expecting a happy ending here?

 

Not me.

 

I'm expecting a bittersweet ending and Max being forced to make a difficult choice.

I think Max is going to have to choose between saving Chloe, or saving the town from the effects of the storm, which is probably the result of all the time travelling shenanigans.

 

If you have Max sit and ponder on one of those benches, she'll have an internal monologue about a Star Trek episode where Kirk goes back in time, and ends up having to choose between saving the life of a woman he had fallen in love with, or allowing her to die but saving millions of lives.

 

The deal with that story was that the woman historically died in a car crash in the 1930s, and if Kirk saves her life she goes on to found a pacifist movement that ends up delaying the U.S. entry into World War Two. Nazi Germany develops the atom bomb first and the Axis powers win. In the end Kirk ends up standing by and watching in horror as she's struck and killed by the car, rather than rescuing her. He allows the woman he loves to die to prevent the Axis from winning the Second World War.

 

I can't help but think that monologue wasn't casual, and that is foreshadowing where the last episode is going to go. I think Max is going to end up facing a similar dilemma as Captain Kirk in that old Star Trek episode.

If Max chooses to save Arcadia Bay I think it is going to involve rewinding time to the day Chloe was initially killed in the bathroom (Max has a selfie from that day), and allowing Chloe to die as that timeline intended. Allowing time to play out as intended prevents the storm and the other oddities like whales beaching, and Max would by then have knowledge to both bring down Nathan and Jefferson. Nathan gets arrested for Chloe's murder, Max leads the police to Rachel's body and the torture room in the barn, and Jefferson gets arrested.

 

The alternative is probably saving Chloe but the town gets destroyed by the tornado in the alternate timeline.

 

That's my theory on how it is going to play out at least.

I know..was expecting more of a sarcastic remark from you...And to be honest, not much of a hard choice really. If Kate isn't alive who in Arcadia Bay do you have any form of Emotional attachment to? The Place seems pretty run down anyway.

Chloe's mom, perhaps. It's been established that Max cares for her at least.  Allowing the town to be destroyed also lets the Prescotts win. The father develops what he wants over the town's ruin.

In truth, I have no idea how they are going to finalise this all in a single episode. I feel like we haven't covered much of the storm actually, or how we are supposed to resolve it (of course, we have theories, but there hasn't been much in-game). The game has mostly focused on Chloe and her search for Rachel. So there's still a lot to do in the final episode, and I haven't the faintest idea of how they are supposed to wrap it up without rushing it. Hopefully, it's a long episode, but don't get me wrong, I love what they have done so far, I just feel like the series would have benefited from being more than five episodes. I too don't believe that we'll get a happy ending, but in truth, I don't remember the last time I played a game that had a happy ending (other than Dragon Age: Inquisition

Yeah that music was a lot better than I expected. I'm always so used to games having repetitive notes on a continuous loop, so it was great actually having a party sound like a party.

Honestly I grow tired of games that have downer endings. Its been sorta the status quo for some time now. Everyone wants to their game to have some form of deep meaning these days.

I still cling to my theory of "Max needs to allow Chloe to die in oder to fix time".

 

Yeah, without Max's rewind power to save her, Chloe would have always (likely) died from being shot in the first episode.

 

Seems to me that we're dealing with a "Donnie Darko" style tangent universe that is inherently unstable and doomed to collapse. The ever increasing number and size of the animals dying, ending with the tornado wiping out all human life in that town, might be the universe's way of balancing the imbalance caused by Chloe's continued world-line creating every expanding ripples.

 

It could also explain why Chloe has so many near-brushes with death, as the universe is trying to course-correct itself, only to be thwarted by Max when she goes back to prevent Chloe from being killed at that point.

 

Whereas, in a universe where Nathan killed Chloe in the first episode;

Even with his father providing the best lawyers possible and despite supposedly "owning" the police, their subsequent investigation into Nathan would have uncovered his further involvement with the drugging and photographing of the various women.

 

Given that's he's not exactly the most stable individual, having both the torment of Rachel Amber's death on his mind (which his "Rachel in the Dark Room" scribbling suggests haunts him) as well as the death of Chloe at his hands, would likely cause him to eventually break under questioning and confess to everything, as well as revealing Jefferson as both the ring leader and murderer of Rachel.

 

At least, that's the most likely outcome that I can think of?

I must say, I do think that there is no way to save Chloe permanently. I believe that Chloe has to die, sadly. I've been thinking about this in relation to another constant, Allisa seems to be doomed to be accidentally hit by a projectile (which we have the option to keep preventing). This is a popular theme within time travel fiction, anyone seen Steins; Gate? :/ if this is true however, I wonder if Kate is also supposed to die? If this is all true, I expect a really depressing ending

I don't know, the Prescotts own half the town. I don't think they would want to destroy it all.

 

Seems more like a native american curse or something. There's an article you can read in the game that says native american groups are protesting against Pan Estates. 

 

On a sidenote, I'm guessing Max got her powers from the totem.

 All the information is up in Chloe's room, though.  Including Nathan's messages and Frank's notebook.  He just has to walk in.  Max even conveniently winnowed down the data to it's most useful components on the right hand side  .

A question for people that didn't write "Max Was Here" in episode 2,

In my playthrough in the final scene, if you go into the building at the scrapyard, the "Chloe was here. Rachel was here. Max was here" is messed with by somebody. (pretty disturbing actually) Is this also the case if Max didn't add her name to the list?
