This is the reason why Bioware took out the blood mage specialty in Inquisition. Plus, there's extra dialogue now from companions about the specializations you choose. They didn't want to try to write something in that required them to justify the Inquisitor being a blood mage, and everybody accepting that. I think it's good that they finally did that. Given that they've never given any reason for us to think that there is anything good about blood magic, aside from Solas who is every bit the contrarian anyway, it was silly for us to be able to use that as a specialization in the first 2 games. Every time blood magic is used in the DA universe, something very bad happens. Solas' attempt to justify it as a valid form of magic looks ridiculous in comparison.

Alistair has a lower intelligence than a Mabari so you shouldn't be surprised he's suddenly behaving differently.
