Ever since KOTOR 2: The Sith Lords was released I have kept KOTOR 3 at the very top of my wish list for new games being developed. I understood the number of things that had to line up for it to ever happen made it all but impossible so until recently I've never really talked about it or made any sort of fuss or deal over the issue. SWTOR was a fun MMO but it paled in comparison to what a proper new KOTOR sequel could be (which is why I've never maintained a subscription for more than a month). HOWEVER, the past few years all of the necessary stars required to make KOTOR 3 a real possibility have aligned one by one. Allow me to lay them out.
1) Bioware was purchased by EA. At the time a horrendous thought to me but now a stroke of pure fortune.
2) Disney bought LucasFilm, licenses, LucasArts, and all. While this led to the saddening closure of LucasArts it cleared away any number of potential licensing issues for future Star Wars media.
3) Disney signed an exclusivity deal with EA for all Star Wars related video game titles for the next decade.
4) Bioware finished development of their largest console project ever, Dragon Age: Inquisition, freeing up major development resources for new projects.
Basically, with Disney now holding all of the licenses and EA owning Bioware and all of it's studios (with one of their best coming off a major project) there is nothing standing in the way of Bioware making a new and proper sequel for the KOTOR franchise. Nothing save the related companies will to make one. And honestly, why wouldn't they? With a new movie on the way next year and a new Battlefront game to compliment it popularity for the franchise across multiple mediums is about to be reinvigorated. KOTOR has always been a massively popular gaming franchise (even with only two games). People still buy it via sites like GOG and replay it today, both via the old medium and the updated one. I think anyone trying to find an argument why a new entry in the series wouldn't sell like hotcakes would be extremely hard pressed to produce any.
Also consider how far Bioware has come in the gameplay arena while still maintaining their nack for narrative flair. Imagine a new KOTOR game with both Mass Effect style gunplay and power mechanics combined with Dragon Age style swordplay and power mechanics. Admittedly, to meet the gold standard they would have to up their game for environmental physics to make force powers as awesome and versatile as they should be. With the newer game engines like Frostbite 3 they have at their command that shouldn't be too much of a challenge over a proper development cycle. Especially if they throw in the optional tactical camera from DA:I. Imagine targeting environmental objects like crates and small trees and even wildlife in outdoors environments and interacting with them with your force powers, causing random objects to explode into shrapnel or fly across the area at an enemy or any number of other combined effects.
With all of those stars aligning, please tell me I'm not the only one who sees the possibilities. That I'm not the only one who wants this more than any other game the entire industry might come up with next. For the love of all of gaming, please make this happen. You actually can now!
