After my first short stint in the game I decided to re-roll my melee rogue (Because of the annoying way melee combat is setup in this game) to a ranged rogue and planned to grab Cole to be my melee rogue instead.
So I added Cole to my party and I set him up to be a melee dagger/dagger stabby poisony spec rogue. I upgraded his armor and weapons to be in line with what I and the rest of my party are wearing except with stats suitable for his spec. My problem is that he dies a lot or uses up a lot of healing potions, whilst the rest of the party barely takes any damage in the area that we are playing in right now.
How can I stop him from getting himself killed or badly hurt so much? Any recommendations/advice? Should I give him more stealth skills? Blackwall is already my tanky taunt guy so my vision for Cole was to do melee damage since I already have Solus (Soon to be replaced by Dorian) to provide the mage/support skills and me to do ranged damage and I'm therefore reluctant to give Cole defensive stats unless it's truly required. I also know that I can just 'pause' combat to set him up but I'd rather only do that if I'm in tough fights and not every time I'm killing some weak trash groups. Thanks ![]()
Cole dies a lot?

Cole tends to work much better as an archer since it keeps his squishy spirit body out of the fray, but if you're set on him being a melee rogue, I recommend knockout powder, evade, and maybe parry to help him mitigate damage. He'll still die pretty often against bosses, but most regular enemies should be okay to deal with.

Ah, so he's inherently frail? I did not realize this, I might just make him an archer then and simply spec him different to me. Thanks for the info! ![]()

Okay so, I didn't like the idea of making him an archer after looking at all the skills again because it would basically mean he's just like my character with perhaps a couple of differences. I don't really want duplicate characters and I really want to keep Cole in my party because he's awesome. So instead I respecced him to have a lot of stealth skills and evades and he takes very little to no damage now. I just gave him Flank Attack with the Skirmisher upgrade and the rest of the points I placed in the stealth category on the right-side of the skill tree (Level 8 at the moment). It's working well!

If you don't want to respec him and want to keep him as a DW rogue, you might want to consider crafting him some armor with Fade-Touched Obsidian in the masterwork slot. That gives any character 3 guard per hit, regardless of class, and with all the DPS Cole does, his guard will make him unkillable.

It's Cole, he is also one of my favourite character. It also depends with who are u pairing him and the specialization for each, he usually manage to survive when Vivienne is around or an ice mage, templar or any other character that can distract the ennemies.
When i have figured out this, he ends up being the last one standing every time. Invisibility can help him a lot.

You do have to manage him more than the other classes and make sure your tank has what ever you are fighting taunted constantly. Also, his biggest weakness is the over abundance of 360 degree aoe attacks. Thankfully most if not all of them have a bit of a wind up. So if you spot a 360 aoe attack coming, use the tac cam to pull Cole back. The good thing about Cole is that of you stick with a duel dagger setup his damage is crazy high once he is around level 13 with damage maximizing gear. I used him as a ranged enemies killer because he can run through them really fast. Pair him with Verric, Solas or Dorian and ranged enemies become a non-issue. Leaving you and your other party member free to take on every other enemy in a fight.

Fade touched Obsidian or Silverite for Guard on hits or Fade-Touched Silk Broche for Fade Cloak(though I'd only recommended if you give him fully upgraded Spinning Blades for guaranteed activation)
Either one of these will definitely keep him alive and keep investing in the Stealth tree which will keep the agro off of him and also further down the tree will get him a boost a huge boost in armor penetration. I wouldn't bother much with poison weapons especially since the Assassin tree combined with stealth will get you guaranteed crits and you get better daggers like nobodies business after Skyhold though giving him one AOE Dagger is what I recommend
Just how I use him now after figuring out the DW Rogue

Sera has Flask of Frost to help her soak up damage and Flask of Lightning to get out of dodge.
For those intent on using Cole as a melee rogue, set Stealth, Evade and Parry to preferred because AI uses them well but turn off all of his other talents as AI will waste them. When an enemy has been CC'd (Sleep, Stun, Frozen etc.) switch to him and use Hidden Blades yourself then slip back into Stealth.
Masterworks aside, if you can get it, the Superb Ring of Life Drain in combination with a Superb Ring of Critical Damage will help as Cole's best means of surviving an encounter is to put enemies down before they get the chance to hurt him.
For those who would prefer to make him an archer, set Stealth to preferred and make sure to use Full Draw yourself instead of leaving it to AI.
Ideally it's best to get to a nice high spot while in Stealth before letting rip for maximum damage.
Just my two cents.

cole dies a lot too but damn man he makes it up later on at higher levels, he kills enemies quicker then I can say attack

Best cure I've found to keep him as a DW is to craft him some heavy armor with fade touched obsidian in that slot, and silverite for the primary (it removes the class restriction) now he has the armor to be in there fighting with his inherent frailty, you've overcome that for him nicely.
With Bull, until you get a guard belt for him, he needs to be set to defend a ranged party member, not follow anyone. He even tells you, he's a "front line body guard." That doesn't mean tank or first attack melee fighter, it means BODY GUARD, his job is to attack them ONLY if they come in and hit the one he's guarding.

Thank you all for your responses. I ended up finishing the entire game using Cole and he rarely died by giving him mainly the stealth and poison skills. Having him fully equipped with healing potions, regeneration potions, and healing grenades. As well as having one warrior companion playing a tanky taunt role.
