I Love Adaar for an inferno mage, According to the Wiki, Adaar is a ship mounted cannon or weapon, specifically it means "Flame Thrower or Flame Shooter" So it's ideal for an Inferno mage.
In my head cannon, the family did not choose a surname until after my Qunari came into his magic and, his parents so admired the adaar on the dreadnaughts that they chose it for the family name because they now had a living version of an adaar in the family.
Unless I am basing them off a Character/ Celebrity I usually just plug names till I find one I like...which then seems to be based off of a Character/ Celebrity. Benjamin Trevelyan, Kara Trevelyan, Cameron Shepard. Etc. Malcolme Cousland.
Aeryn Hawke.
I like the name I use for my main femquisitor. It has a nice ring to it. See my signature
I had a guinea pig named lightning...so my female qunari is Lightning Adaar. Which ofc translates into Lightning Weapon. She's awesome and likes to munch elfy carpet
For a mage, I like to use the name Rjak (from Master of Magic). For other characters I either use Lohengrin (from Wagner) or Memnon (the Greek mercenary who fought Alexander the Great).
First playthrough in a RPG is always 'Ash' or 'Danae'. Don't know when Ash started, Danae was my first Fallout 1 try (and fail
)
Which one it is, I find out the oldschool way: Throwing the dice.
So this time it's:
Ash, Skyssa and Payne Trevelyan
Rúna Cadash
Assan Adaar
Merril "No, not the one with an Eluvian, thank you very much!" Lavellan
My Female Elf Mage with a caregiver personality was named Frelssarinn, which means savior in Icelandic and is a part of a name of a song by Sigur Ros, the fly savior.
My Male Dwarf Warrior with a selfcentered and cranky personality was named Saeglopur, the lost seafarer, even though the lore of the game doesn't really paint a picture of Dwarfs being seamen. Although the Lyrium trafficing could be done by sea, too... right? ![]()
That's actually really awesome. I only have a back story that indepth for like three of my characters. One from each game lol. Usually my first one. The rest I only just have a "what was happening right before this?" Back story
Thanks. I don't always have a really clear backstory. My Oblivion character just stole stuff ya know. I cant even remember what I called her. The Dragon Age series just really sucks me in story wise. That and I have several hours a day at work where my body is busy but my mind is free to wander. (Cook, not Prostitute
)

I wish I had known Lightning the guinea pig. S/He sounds awesome. My guinea pig was named Sam.

Damn Icelandic names are cool. Also, I always assumed that dwarves would sink. Varric looks pretty dense. On the other hand, my qunari cant even wade out a few feet on the Storm Coast without drowning and we know they have a navy. The best thing about rpg's is that each player tells their own story. In your story Dwarves maybe float like corks ![]()
As banal as it sound, I usually pick the names for my characters from the Sindarin dictionary (I usually play elves so...) or from characters I liked in movie/books/games.
my canon Inquisitor is a female Elf I've called Darel (stopping, halting). For my male elf I choose Amrod (nomad) and Gwath (shadow) for a new female mage lavellan.
This time, the only non-sindarin name I've choosen was the one of my lady Qunari. I've called her Zula, from the character in Conan the Barbarian.
What I look more is how the name sound, better if is very short. I don't like long names. I always end up making niknames for the people with long names.
Named my human male Thane because of course.
My Dalish, I named her Xylia, which is Greek for 'from the woods'. Thought it was fitting.
I generally don't care too much about names, however. I've even used default names a couple times.
I don't have a system whereby I make my names. The requirements: they should not carry me out of the world, so RL names are usually out unless they appear in the world. They should sound somewhat nice and/or interesting. They should be somewhat lore-compliant.
My main Warden: Eorlin Amell
My second Warden: Marada Aeducan
My main Hawke: Rowan Hawke
My human Inquisitor: Maelyn Trevelyan
My elven Inquisitor: Lilaeya Lavellan
My dwarven Inquisitor: Rûne Cadash (The "e" is spoken, as a schwa)
My human female rogue Inquisitor right now is named Samantha and my human male mages tend to be named Gareth, but I don't really know why for either of them. I sort of got tired of making up entirely new names so I've been sticking to real world ones for Inquisition.
I always get stuck here. I generally play through at least once with each race, then pick a favorite race and play through again. Sometimes I go with the default name, but I usually don't like the default name. So I'm curious, what are some names you guys have used? And do you have any suggestions for me? I am playing a female human mage, from house Trevelyan obviously. Any suggestions? (I simply do NOT like the name Evelyn..)
Aww Evelyn Trevelyan sounds great! Rolls off the tongue! ![]()
I've collected names over the years and I just cycle through those in various RPGs.
My Trevelayn mage girl is Anthea, which I first heard on the show Ripper Street.
My guy Trevelyan is Judah, after Judah Ben-Hur from Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (the novel, although the movie is OK too). I really like using Jewish names for my guys for some reason. I've also gone with Aaron and Ithamar (Judah's father). I thought this convention worked really well when I had a male non-mage Hawke + sister Bethany, which is a biblical name.
My Warden is Chrys (short for Chrysanthemum).
I do like using flower or plant names for female characters and I've got a bunch of those: Carnation, Camellia, Gerbera, Dahlia, Ivy, Fern, and some others.
My fem Hawke is Eleni after Eleni Zinovia. I've got a bunch of different kind of names to go along with this one. Thuria is the name of one of the moons of Mars in Edgar Rice Burroughs's John Carter novels. K'Ehleyr (I normally omit the vocal glyphs so it's Kehleyr) is Worf's mate from Star Trek: The Next Generation. When I was trying to create a name for my fem warrior in Skyrim I developed Verja (Ver-ya, the way Jarl is pronounced) while looking at some Nordic naming conventions.
I also have two names that are modifications of my own real name.
My advice is to come up with an influence that you like, whether that be a culture or just some sounds, and then go from there. Even if I didn't create many of these myself, it has taken me a long time to select those that I'm happy to use over and over again in the various games I play. A good source for names are movie credits. If you want a different type of name you can try a foreign movie. Also, just putting "<country> baby names" in Google gives great results.
I have difficulty with names as well. I want a name that I like but that also fits the character's culture (an elven name has to feel elven, a dwarven name has to feel dwarven, and so on) however I am absolutely terrible at thinking up one. Often I go with the default name but that only works for one playthrough of that race...
Human names are probably the easiest though - not that I'm not horribly indecisive about those, too.
I've always had a somewhat tradition on naming my characters four letter long names. It just stuck after my Hawke. Usually I just see what sounds good with their last name, what seems to fit name wise. In order (all female)-
Dalish Warden- Ziva Mahariel
Hawke- Luna Hawke
Mage Elf Waden- Sage Surana
City Elf Warden- Aria Tabis
Elfquistor- Lyra Lavellan
Dwarf Quistor- Cora Cadash
Jex
Aurora
Aurore
Aeri
Europeia
Eurora
Eurys
Eryso
Eurys
Euthea
Eothea
Eumeda
Euphne
Eumeter
Euloru
Eureya
Eugaia
Eumione
Eux
Euxis
Eullis
Euriya
Eurhea
Eulene
Eunith
Eunthe
Euva
Isa
Iza
Tian
Yaria
Yashia
Usually, I plan ahead and use meaningful names depending on the personality I want my character to have. Like when I name characters, I literally go to babynames or some other site with foreign names and look up names that means something that fits my character. The name-searching takes more time than the actual character creation, mostly. ;;
Inquisition is kind of an exception, though. When I got the game, I got so excited that I played it right away and I named my elf Inquisitor Mithiin -- it's a word in our local language meaning "wish" or "desire". It doesn't really express my Inquisitor, but it's more about me, 'cause I've been wanting to get Inquisition and my friends gave it to me, and they kind of fulfilled my birthday wish.
Corny, I know. But when I thought about it, it's a good name, and I won't replace it if given the chance. My decisions for her started to fit her name and it just seem pretty amazing.
But since Inquisition's a birthday gift that I wouldn't get if it weren't for my friends, my next few Inquisitors are a mash-up of their initials, cause you know, I got to credit them that I was even able to play, right? So my next female and male Inquisitor whose races I haven't really decided on would be named Myrka and Jarde, respectively.
While my brother just goes and names everyone Viktor, all because he thinks it's going to be a plot point, not for consistency's sake.
Human names are easier to come up with since ... well, I usually use websites that generate names and humans in DA uses just common tongue aka English/current rl language.
Kind of hard to find a good name for Dalish/Qunari/Dwarf since one has to take into account of the established history behind a particular race. Good thing there was a page on DA elvish on the wiki. I used those to piece together a name for my Dalish Inquisitor.
But usually when I pick a name for a character, I try to pick a theme from mythology or something rather from ancient times.
I dunno, I've always liked the name "Kazmius" for elves. I thought it'd make a good fit for an Elven Mage.
Mine was a Qunari Mage female romancing Sera . And I stuck with the name of : Horny Adaar ![]()
Names come easily to me, so I generally have little trouble coming up with a first name that "flows" well with the provided surname, e.g. Luther Trevelyan.
