My character was Maxwell "default" Trevelyan, but now I think that Amatus sounds like a good name  :D .

Lugh Adaar - from the Celtic god of light, Lugh.

Gale Trevelyan, mage, cause my Gale is as dangerous as the storm

Tristan Adaar, cause of Tristan and Isolde.

Mine was a Qunari Mage female romancing Sera . And I stuck with the name of : Horny Adaar  :P

This is awesome. :D

Like many other folks here, I pull from a list of names I've always liked. I used to be really into name generators as well, but most of the ones I favored have lost their appeal.

I've only played elven Inquisitors, actually.  And I've taken effort at naming them appropriately.

Falin is named for the elven god of the dead, of course.  Her mother died in birth, and her father was hoping to honor the god to better his wife's chances in the afterlife.

Dayn'yel is a play on the old Hebrew name Daniel.  I read a writer once that likened the elves to those ancient tribes, and I thought that was a fascinating allusion.

And Dalin is a cutesy name that plays off the elven word of Dahlen, of course.

The choice for my default Rogue Artificer inquisitor, Angelique, was just a matter of enjoying that name, especially in concert with the Trevelyan surname.

Basically, it's the same in the case of Celestine (Human Knight Enchanter), Mhirissa (Dwarven Artificer), and Ninaeve (Elven Rift Mage).

But my others tend to have more personal significance.

Agravain is an extremely pragmatic and rather vain pro-circle mage.

(a good contrast, and concord with Cassandra)

Daedryon is a reaver whose name came to me thanks to the Daedric princes of Elder scrolls. He's aggressive and ruthless.

(a contrast for Josephine)

The name for my Templar, Alaric means ruler, basically. but it sounds particularly heroic to me.

(again, a good contrast and concord for his LI, Dorian)

My first playthroughs of DA games are always female rogues, their names have all been the same (same name for my FemShep too). It's a nude model's fake name from years ago, she doesn't use it anymore. I'm the only person who plays these games so not one ntocies, it's for me only really. Won't say the name, that would give it away and people might google NSFW images. :P

Other then than:

Human male, no matter what role, Nathaniel.

Non-human - Kaden (made up)

Other female - Keeta (usually evil/renegade) or Peeta, both made up.

When I name my male characters I just use whatever comes to my mind. When it comes to naming my chicks my general rule is the shorter the better.

When in doubt, name them Sprinkles. If it's good enough for a hamster, it's good enough for a mage.

Truth be told, that's what I named my Mabari Hound companion in Origins. Otherwise, I tend to name my characters after herbs for some reason: Vetiver, Sorrel, Marjoram, etc.

Thanks. I don't always have a really clear backstory. My Oblivion character just stole stuff ya know. I cant even remember what I called her. The Dragon Age series just really sucks me in story wise. That and I have several hours a day at work where my body is busy but my mind is free to wander. (Cook, not Prostitute ;) )

Haha xD

Yea, I can't remember half my characters, partly because I make so many. I stop trying to make back stories after several playthroughs. Which is usually a sign to meto put the game down for a little while xD

I don't have a system whereby I make my names. The requirements: they should not carry me out of the world, so RL names are usually out unless they appear in the world. They should sound somewhat nice and/or interesting. They should be somewhat lore-compliant.

My main Warden: Eorlin Amell
My second Warden: Marada Aeducan
My main Hawke: Rowan Hawke
My human Inquisitor: Maelyn Trevelyan
My elven Inquisitor: Lilaeya Lavellan
My dwarven Inquisitor: Rûne Cadash (The "e" is spoken, as a schwa)

I'm the same way. I think that's part of why I have such a hard time making names. I feel like if it seems familiar to me, my mind will wander to something or someone not in my game, and it ruins the immersiveness

As I said, I don't have trouble the first few play through a. Its usually when I've played it through a lot, and am on likely a third play through of a particular race. Its easier with actual RPGs that let you sort of piece out a personality for you character like DA does. Games that let you choose a name but don't give you conversation choices to shape your character, its so much harder >.<

I like that you used a name that another character has in universe. I've considered doing that as well, because realistically most given names wouldn't be unique and would probably be shared by at least thousands of other people.

That is one of the things I like about A Song of Ice and Fire (the book series Game of Thrones is based on). Different characters in the series sometimes share the same first name, and it's the last name that sets them apart.

I prefer it actually, when this happens.  I gave my Shepard the first name 'Abigail' and then was delighted to find out that Ashley's sister shared the same first name, I felt it gave them a connection.

I named my Human Warrior Alexander after Alexander the Great. Makes sense when you think about it. He conquered most of the known world at that point while you are pretty much doing the same thing as the inquisitor. My mage I named Medivh because of Warcraft lore, but if you haven't played it then the name would make no sense haha

I -almost- always draw from Tolkien.  I also frequently tried to keep the same chain of characters named similarly so I can keep track of which one imported to which in my head.  For example, Morwen > Theodwyn > Eowyn  (grandmother > mother > daughter) for DAO > DA2 > DAI

I initially scoffed at this, but now that I think about it, I agree. I wouldn't actually use it in a DA setting, or at least not in DAI, but I think I will add it to my name collection and think of Dorian whenever I use said character in some other game. XD

Without even realising it my character's names were actually chosen according to a pattern. My "good" ones were Adain Surana, Garret Hawke and Elias Trevelyan my Dragon A.G.E characters. My bad characters were Bahlin Aeducan, Marian Hawke and Finnis Adaar, my B.M.F Characters (Bad Mother F***ers). Where as my neutral group was Alora, Tora, Nate and Chase, the AL-TORA-NATE CHAS (alternate characters).

Realised all of this after the fact.

Maker's breath! You should get a verse or two in the Chant.  ;D

I just tinker with other appropriate names or words and personalise them into names. If I already know who the family members are and what roles they play that kinda helps. Cousland was Franne because of the /f/ in Fergus and the /br/ in Bryce and — yeah. Hawke was Bryne because it seemed like a clever (?) play on brine and Brian.

I've spent my entire RPG-playing life gritting my teeth over never getting class spec, eyebrows, names the way I want them though. WTB in-game recustomisation option? WTB list of popular names in Ostwick 9:40 Dragon or Space 2150 at character creation? Because I change my mind so much, alternatively I must know the baby naming trends so I can break them!? But I really like the pre-established names in Inquisition, so I've started to just roll with 'em. The whole Hawke/Shepard/LADY TREVELYAN thing they've got going on now pleases me. Surnames rock.

Inquisitor: Marika Trevelyan (nicknamed Trev  ;) ) - mage
