MESSAGE POPULAIRE !

Beat the game last night.  It left me feeling vaguely empty and dissatisfied.  I don't think I've ever played a game with so much content that felt so empty.  Here are some of my points:

-Inquisition attempted to replicate what made Origins great, but made a pale, mediocre version of it.

-Scale of conflict was similar, but lacked Origin’s sense of urgency and focus on primary task

-Large amount of open world content was mildly entertaining, but not truly gripping or relevant

-Story should drive gameplay, not the other way around

-Both heroes and villains were mildly interesting, but failed to connect to audience emotionally

-Villain’s powers were explored, but lacked deeper exploration of backstory and motivations.  So much wasted potential there!

-Little to no music in the game.  A wasted opportunity to improve the overall mood of the game.

-Changes to gameplay require INC explanation, or you are undermining the ongoing universe of Dragon Age.  Specifically, the removal of healing magic and other spells which were previously universal and low-level, and the changing of stats such as Attack.

-Ending parallels Origins with calling of army, but lacks corresponding gameplay elements.  Lessens impact of your actions, makes player feel like their actions made no difference

-Final battle with Elder One has unexplained elements that detract from scene.  Where was it happening?  How did they figure out where he was?  Felt rushed.

-Epilogue narration attempts to both close plotlines and set up for future games by implying later conflict.  You can’t do both!  It makes the player feel like their decisions didn’t matter.

-Post-credit teaser scene is interesting, but obnoxious.  DA2 was setup for this game, and the ending of this game is set up for later games- “to be continued syndrome”.  I’m tired of being told the epic story will come next time.  Make THIS game have a good story, and I’ll buy the next one because I expect the same.  Keep teasing me, and I will lose interest.

I’m not going to sit here and say this game was terrible.  I played it for 75 hours and was entertained, and that makes it worth the price of purchase.  However, I will say that it was a mediocre attempt to replicate the success of Dragon Age Origins.  It captures the epic scale of the game, but lacks its spirit.  6/10.

You made some good points about the story line and characters.  I have enjoyed playing the game except for a few things that are difficult (at least for me) to accomplish without help.  First is the video arcade "frogger" action of having to jump over objects and climb(jump) to get to where you need to be or when you are trying to get shards.  Along with this is having to reach just exactly to pick up items from the ground.  How does that enhance gameplay?  I just have a keyboard and while someone else may have something better it makes it frustrating.  It took me 15 minutes to get one shard in the valley where you defeat the dragon in the Hinterlands.  I kept over jumping or landing between the rocks and get stuck.  Secondly the Astriums are hard to solve.  And lastly, no instructions in important areas.  Currently Cassandra is level 19 but cannot advance as a templar because it is locked.  Why?  No explanation anywhere.  I have 4 points that I can't spend in Templar.  This is really annoying.

I had the exact same score.. I removed 2  for technical problems, and an obviously rushed game, and 2 more for enjoyment..

The graphics, obviously, were great(though they didnt stay clean, or smooth constantly, at all).. The main story, followers, and follower missions were what saved this game!  Though, they were too short, or in short supply.. They felt lik ethe Bioware i remember.. Conversations,

90% (guesstimate) of the questing was meaningless, unrewarding, boring, filler, fetch quests... Endless walking only broken up by herb, ore, or the random 3 pack of enemies!

There were so many gltches, bugs, or blatant signs of unfinished coding, and development, that one could not ignore! I cannot forgive this practice of release it now, maybe fix it later.. IF its still lucrative.. Its ruoinging gaming for me, and it is the one hobby i have outside of my family, and work..

Sadly, this is becoming average for Bioware.  They are a shell of what they used to be. Their soul is gone.

Good review, touches on the most evident shortcomings of the game. I'd add the limited and quite terrible UI to that list and give it a 5/10. It's a very skippable game.

so bioware is the collector's [of money] and ea is the reapers [of those benefits]

Regular price    6 out of 10 for me      on sale, 7 out of 10 for me because $45 CAD is what the game is worth.

I played it through once and I'm done with it and forgotten.

All your points I agree with.

They should change the company name to Tranquilware.

Agreed with most of that, OP. I'd give it a 6/10 as well...

Guys let's face it, we are left behind. The need for MMO-type fetch quests conquered the market and Bioware adapted to these circumstances.

Just read the other posts of these forums. People love collecting flowers and stones and adore characters which are nowhere as exciting and detailed as the ones of the old generation.

I have to disagree with that. I don't think this game tried to be like Origins at all. Combat, the tone, the areas, etc. It's all very different.

Yeah. Collect 6 beers from the nearest tavern, then drink it. A DLC for 24$... We are lucky to have a computer/console. What would we do without it?...

Now that's a good "micro-review" if ever I've seen one. Even if I don't agree to the weight of some of these issues on the experience (and would argue that some other issues not mentioned are actually more important), I can't argue that these points exist, are valid and very well expressed. These are the kind of reviews I like to read.

I'd say the overall tone I agree with completely even if some points from my experience may differ: the game has sacrificed a lot of the variety and depth in it's plot, locations and characters in favour of scale.

i dont know how the game got high rating. the game fells apart as soon as u do the last story mission and say is that it. wheres the epic stuff we thought we wud see,  it left bad taste as a bioware game really dissapointed in the game.

the reviewers on ign and other sites didnt play the complete game to see how average the game was so many shortcomings from bioware baffles me.  i cant believe it. but it happened bioware what happened to you guys??

a feedback to bioware - large worlds dosent mean nothing if you dont fill it with epic story at each individual part and npc keep it like mass efect your games are all about epic stories and chracter development and making those chracter feel like family through the whole journey.

leave this mmo mess you want to make you shudnt sacrifice story for bad side quests that fill the large areas it going to make bad impression.

in short - increase the scale only if you have epic content to fill it up. dont make bad sidequests to fill up that space your time cud have been well spent in story then in those stupid sidequeststs grrrrrrr

The spirit from Origins is gone because EA has no soul. A soulless product = no spirit.

It's either....

1. Game was given high rating due to successful marketing tactics.

Or..

2. The masses settle for mediocrity/image over substance.

Or..

3. A bit of both.

@Honourable Bigot

The only thing i personally enjoyed in this game was the companions and the varic card game felt everyone was family and wanted to spend times like that a lot through the whole game where every companion shared laugh and talk with each other from time to time in whole story was needed, the story was okishh as soon as the story ends the game falls apart with left only bad side quests and empty uninteresting land is what this game was

this video is what bioware needed to put more often in game all companions enjying together after each small victory and multiple character enjoyment varic card game as example i personally needed this and was smiling all the way when this happened

as what blackwall says - you need to tell stories more often i always think bioware as more of a story teller then a game creator stories that makes u lost in them and dont want to come out and stay with ur companions

leaving out the companions the game was average with so many other short comings that i dont even feel like typing. average and disappointing game from bioware who likes to tell epic stories and create a love towards companions the game deserved more love from bioware then it got.

I get you, Niel.

Other than killing hordes of people/things I actually enjoy the interaction with companions, romances, etc. And while you get this in DA:I, it's almost shallow and empty. Some characters were done well though... just not as good as in previous games.

I think if they were going with the open world thing, they should have taken a similar approach to that of DA:O. There were side-quests but it was along the way to a major story plot point, so in a way it gives you a purpose to get these side quests done and you were often rewarded for them...

But I dunno, it's like they just spent more time/resources into advertising the game to be this epic mind blowing RPG of the decade rather than actually add some substance to this game... this is evident if you examine how short the main story is as opposed to all of the filler quests + so many bugs and crash issues... Won't even talk about the controls....

It has its upsides, though. I enjoyed judgments... dragon battles (when it didn't turn my game into Matrix-style slow-motion) a certain character/romance, the banter when it was working (made playing fetch less tedious).. some of the environments were pleasing on the eye, notably the Hinterlands and the Emerald Graves.. also, being able to biff Solas was pretty cool too.

OR:

MONEY is involved !?!?!?!?!?!? ;)

When big companies hit a wall, they just throw money at it until it breaks and crumbles under the sheer weight of all the sacks of money - PROBLEM SOLVED!

That's the power of money!

Of course PR is a big part of everything these big companies do these days. They don't want to show any weakness there. They want to blind the idle consumers as much as possible!

And the bigger this industry gets the less these power-people wanna lose a single "race to the top"! The money-people took over and now the original business of making games is gone. This whole industry has completely shifted its focus from making games to making money and to "winning at all cost".

And that's why these big companies will stop at NOTHING!

Agreed.

So.. wanna make a bet they'll introduce "Freemium" concepts to the mix?

Somebody on the BSN actually suggested and supports it so...

But it's genius, though.

Step one: Market game and pretend it's going to be so epically amazingly orgasmic RPG of the decade. Ensure that GOTY title follows.

Step two: Simultaneously, create concepts in-game that will annoy the sh*t out of people. Such as, ugly hairstyles/eyebrows, unattractive armour, long war table missions, pointless fetch quests, etc.

Step three: Following the rules of "Problem/Reaction/Solution", offer to give devoted players and fans the option of extra hairstyles, avoiding war table missions and fetch quests, all the while receiving all (or what little) benefits of such.

Step four: Sit back, have an expensive glass of wine, laugh at the minions below you... and watch the $$$$$$$$$$ come rolling in.

Also releasing the game mere weeks before the GOTY awards started to be given out was a brilliant strategy, lots of people on here that I've been watching that have been expressing their disappointment with Inquisition were actually defending it at first or at the very least agreeing with those that defended it, it took them time to see the flaws. People would have voted for GOTY awards before they had even put much time into the game simply because it was new and good to look at.

Also Freemium concepts can **** off. Though sadly i can see that **** happening.

oh the decisions were good but was all lies and false. none mattered in the end as the epilogue pretty much single handed destroyed the game for me.

you get pictures of things that happened with little variations is this how bioware is planning to do all their epilogue , we didnt get to see visually what is going on cudnt they give different cinematic to all those epilogues that single handed wud have made people mind change in a good way to actually see what your decision had impacted in the game how people lives are changed but we get this

wtffffffffffffffffffff is this when ever i see this i get so angry on this game ruined the ending and all in game decisions. single handed ruined the game for me.

where is that mass effect type of cinematics and endings leaving me3 one but where are those cinematics i wont post more abt this game its average and my mind is made up i wont buy another bio ware game unless it really is epic.

-1 bioware reputation with this tittle

That's the thing... nothing really changes, except faces or in the epilogue's case.. words.

Even during the game, example; you either side with Mages or Templars. Your options, after dealing with their sh*t storm?

Conscript, or partner up.

Do you see any difference about this choice, though?

Nope, save for some slightly differing dialogue afterwards...

And who is made divine?

Either Cass, Lel or Viv. So if we go by what usually happens with these games, we have to wait until the next instalment to see what difference this choice actually makes...

Since it'll be too hard to actually implement the differences between the three, you will get a brief two minute cameo appearance at most, and all efforts will be made to avoid the subject of Divine Victoria and whoever it may be.

Every choice in the game is purely for show, and it works, some people actually believe it matters.

For example, i gave the wardens a chance and let them join me since it said they might be vulnerable to corruption or something along those lines, but it didn't make a damn difference.

Same for Orlais, who leads? who gives a toss! either way you get your army that you never use and it makes no difference other than a couple of lines of dialogue.

Some will claim theres a limit to how much they can do and that's true there is, but maybe they should focus on quality over quantity and spend their resources on making a great game with REAL choices and consequences rather than focusing purely on size.

Quality>>>>Quantity.
