There is nothing that prevents cross-region games, either through invites or through quickmatch.  But, since quickmatch prioritizes low-ping hosts, you will generally not see cross-region matches made through quickmatch for the most part.

Hmmmm...what causes the situation where it dumps me into a lobby on my own when I search for a quickmatch? It only occurs when I play outside "regular" hours.

It could not find anyone with acceptable ping responses, but instead of telling you that no lobby was found, it just creates one.

Which begs the question: How does that work exactly? If cross-region games should be possible, how then are folks playing in off-hours for one regions not seeing matches from another region instead?

This is what has me confused. If it's "prioritising" low ping hosts and none is found, I'd expect it to put me into a lobby with the next best thing no matter what that may be. That isn't happening.

I have also wondered about this. I had a theory that maybe it happens if the previous host leaves while you are loading in. Then, rather than boot you back to the menu and tell you the lobby no longer exists, an unseen host migration takes place.

I used to think so too, but the frequency it occurs during odd hours only changed my view.

I was about to edit my post but as you've already quoted it I'll add it here instead.

This theory is somewhat backed up by the fact that on a couple of occasion I have quick searched only to end up back in the multiplayer menu with the message "Host migration failed" without ever having seen a lobby, It is also complicated by the fact that we load into the lobby of games in progress, not the game itself. So what would happen if a soloing host disconnects while you are loading in?

But yes, it does happen a little too frequently for this to always be the explanation.

Are you kidding me? Please tell me that you are.

rlro has told Amelia and has gotten a reply on how every single game in which there is a high enough ping between the host and the client will invariably result in Black Screen/Eternal Loading for the client. Amelia said it was a condition simple enough to be emulated and it that it would be looked into. I can't put a link here because I am on mobile, though I believe you are aware that this bug exists.

And I must repeat, I can not join any European host nor most East Coast Americans via invitation.

I think ill be fine with my "poor internet speed".. Who would want to immigrate to a country with a second rate education system and third world health system.. Though it is funny.. America has one of the worst mobile communications networks having only converted to digital relatively recently.. meanwhile it has one of the best internet systems.. the reverse however is true for Australia.. one of the slower internet systems due to running off an old copper network, yet one of the best mobile communications networks.

Fair point about our health and public education systems. Our politics have taken a turn for the worse. At least we have lag free internet gaming =)

Also, I know there are other Aussies that play (and kiwis!) its just a matter of finding them. Try the recruitment forums

That wasn't the question that he was answering.

He was asked about a lock included in the design to prevent cross-region play, and he said there wasn't one. What you are talking about is a different issue.

He mentioned that we can play cross-region via invites twice, something that isn't the reality for some players including myself.

Will the option to choose enemy factions be added sometime? It'd be nice to be able to guarantee no encounters with enemies that cause progression glitches. Especially nice incase more are added and any of them cause problems with systems. (Such as Collectors did for PS3s from time to time in ME3MP.)

Well then, I think it's safe to say they intended for users to be able to play across regions by invite, but there is some other issue preventing you from doing so. That could be a matchmaking problem, but it could also be some other kind of connection problem. Even an Origin problem, depending on what happens when you try.

As far as failure to find a match and creating a lobby, it would not surprise me if it does this by design when the only matches found are ones not worth playing.

Then could a couple of other folk who know each other internationally, test/validate this please by inviting each other (by platform)?

It would be interesting and useful to know if SpaceV3gan's experience is common.

Does:

  • international invitation fail in all cases?
  • international invitation fail in many cases?
  • international invitation fail in few cases?

The answer could help the devs understand the extent of the issue.

I'm happy to setup some testing if anyone has the technical knowhow to do some traceroutes, we would need the technical data.

oh, that sounds complex... does it not just involve two friends in different continents trying to invite each other into a private match?

Am I under-complicating this?

We would need sample data to see where the connection breaks, so ideally we would need V3gan, and two-three players across europe to check if there is ANY connection to europe from his origin location, or not.

If not, then we would be able to see where the connection times out from the logs. Prehaps it's simply a threshold issue as Bioware has already noted, but in any case logs would be the way forward.

I just don't know how to trace outgoing connections in real time, but I suppose it's time to test my internet search-fu skillz.

I am technically in awe...  :)

I can plug my Xbox in and use 17 buttons on my controller, but that is far as it goes...

For me, playing from Brazil, it fails in all cases except for most of South America and parts of North America.

This issue has already been reported and promptly answered by a dev on the 'General Dev - Fan MP interactions discussion thread' page 4. Thus Bioware is aware of this issue in addition to have had the opportunity to reproduce it.

PC Player? What difficult level? How do you know they are North Americans? From what part of North America are they? (most likely not from the East Coast).

We have a thread set up for Oceanics. I have a couple dozen mates I have been playing with for weeks so games are not an issue for me. Never said they were.

A minor question:

When I Fade Cloak on my Elementalist or Keeper, if I try to cast Barrier on myself during the invulnerability period it doesn't work, is this intended?

I thought I noticed that on my keeper a few times, but I wasn't 100% sure that was the reason.
