Although I must admit I find it peculiar. The sign is more or less hidden. Could be because it is old and worn out of course.

Sometimes the simplest possibilities are the most easily overlooked. And keeping with that, that was also my first assumption - that it wasn't deliberately hidden, but just faded with age. At least, in the context of the game. I expect if anyone was deliberately hiding anything it would be the devs. Sneaky bastards.

It's the exact same symbol , and it's not a common one , I guess it was done on purpose.

 

About mind control and such , it seems people ends up leaving the place for unknown reasons, and Morrigan says the place is sacred and grants protection .
