0.46 is out, so I'm using that.  I'm also using those drivers.  Alas, I have no way of hooking up my HDMI cable to a TV from here in the office.

Thanks for the heads up.  recompiling mods using 0.46.  :)

Hold on a sec, that was the major improvement promised in december? One added button that console players had since launch? I hope you are joking or just jokingly assuming that this is it :D

It both wasn't the improvement promised, and was the only one provided.  It's a case of "wall of silence" EA policy making things worse.

A number of posts, blogs, and so forth, all spoke a fair bit about improving the PC controls, and that those improvements would be in an "upcoming patch."  Well, Patch 3 was sent out as a rush job to fix a few game-breakers... and it, in turn, broke a couple of things, which resulted in Patch 4 a few weeks later.  None of the improvements or changes that were mentioned were included there.

One infers that the As Yet To Be Announced Patch 5 is targeted for the major work.  But with no communication, we have "patches coming with major improvements," then "here's a patch with a walk toggle," and then "here's a patch to fix the shields that the walk toggle patch broke."

There were other fixes, some of them progression blockers.  But for everyone following the news for PC control scheme improvements, the above sequence was... somewhat baffling.

All of this would have been easily clarified, and many customers greatly satisfied, if they'd simply said, "Hey folks, PC controls are still being worked on and will feature prominently in a patch or two, but right now we need to get these progression blockers fixes; while we were at it, Fred added a walk toggle because it was easy for him to do quickly."

Without that basic level of communication, you get rampant speculation, customers who feel like they aren't getting communication for some reason  , and much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I have noticed that if I use hdmi to hook it up to an external tv, there is less sound stuttering. Unsure why but I've confirmed it by switching back and forth.

Okay, THAT's weird.  My primary monitor is my HDTV (couch, high tables, wireless keyboard and multi-button gaming mouse, profit).  I never experienced sound stutters outside of loading scenes; maybe this is why?  o.O

I have noticed that if I use Mantle, loading screen music is perfectly smooth.  If I use DirectX, loading screen music skips, repeats, stutters, and generally has a hissy fit.  It's very strange.  Unfortunately Mantle is a mess and unusable in my experience, so I gave up fiddling with it.  Dual HD 7970s in Crossfire here, latest Omega driver.

Er - let me check - yes.  Oh well.  Sadly, looks like Omega (14.12) from 12/9 is still the latest AMD driver.  Beta is older, from November, and should not be used unless you need to roll back from the Omega.

Edit: AMD's driver release schedule seems to be pretty consistently in the 3-4 month range.  It's now been a little over 2 months since Omega.  Hopefully, the next Beta driver will become available some time in the next 4-6 weeks; and the "whatever comes after Omega" driver will be along in March or April.

This is only going by general trends of past releases.  If AMD (and Nvidia for that matter) have some major improvements as a result of working with Bioware all this time, it's possible they might release something sooner.  Usually, though, they wait until a number of fixes are ready together.  Only rarely does a new driver get pushed out just to address a single game or issue, unless it's a truly heinous one.

Yeah, I have trouble using Mantle as well (my old card was a Sapphire Radeon R9 2XX.)  It looks sharper, but there is this tiny microstutter.  It's hard to describe, but it's like I'll turn my character's head and there is a second where it stutters.  Or as I'm moving along, there will be a slight and quick stutter.  When the graphics are fairly cranked like mine are, this became very noticeable and irritating quick.  Rather like a hangnail, I couldn't get rid of it.  This was constant and while DirectX doesn't look quite as good (nor can get the overall steadier FPS that Mantle can,) it became way too much of a hassle to mess with.

Has Mantle gotten any better since the latest game patch, or should I continue to patiently wait for the next driver update?  I have a new video card (XFX Radeon R9 280X) so I've been debating about trying it again.  I don't want that mircostutter again.  In any case, I don't mind waiting, I'm only curious to see if anyone has any thoughts and/or ideas about it.

Oh lucky you.  Microstutter used to solely be the domain of us mutli-card users, but it sounds like you run a single card.  I wasn't sure whether to attribute the stutter to Crossfire, or Mantle, or the drivers, or DA:I, but I quickly got tired of trying to figure it out.  Currently an engineer in a large enterprise environment, juggling several major projects; coming home and troubleshooting in my spare time does not appeal right now.

Tho to be fair nothing appeals right now except lolling about on the couch and making vague hand-waves over a keyboard.  I recently started running / lifting / yoga again, and my brain is pudding.  Just now, the tea kettle whistled and I got up and turned off my radiator valve.  This really just happened.

I've had that stutter problem with Mantle since the game came out (played and finished the game the first time before patch 2 came out.)  I wish Crossfire had something to do with it, but you're correct in that I only run one card.  While it's gotten better after the December driver update, it was still there as of last month.  I'll take a look after my husband goes to work and let you guys know.  I'll be able to tell very quickly.

@Spacefiddle.    I think you need some sleep at this point.  A hot bath or shower might be a good idea as well.  I am enjoying chatting with you though.

You are definitely not imagining things. That stutter is there with an APU also, and only with mantle. I'll run the game again once my memory upgrade shows up since I think it's just a memory thing on my side but the stutter goes away with directx11.

Sadly, I wouldn't expect it to be your memory.  I'm running with 16G and I still ran into that.   So just to give you a heads up, I don't think the memory upgrade.  I hope it helps.  I do use DirectX as a result of that stupid stutter, but I wish I didn't have to though.  :(

I will have to shower in the morning, as currently I may be in danger of drowning.  Waiting a bit before hitting the sack; I'm in EST, if I'd gone to bed already I'd likely have popped awake at 4 AM.  Which fortunately is not something I normally have to do!

@Peregrinus: i am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I have 16 GB of RAM and I get plenty of stutter :(.  Memory probably won't help.  Game is on a RAID-1 array of 7200 RPM disks, so while it's not as drag-race fast as an SSD, disk access shouldn't really be an issue either.

@ both of y'all: i think Mantle just isn't ready for prime time.  AMD desperately wants to replace DirectX, for some reason, and they pushed too hard, too soon, dug too greedily and too deep... this foe is beyond all of you... RUN!!

yeah sleep soon.  @_@

I just tested Mantle and while the stutter appears to have diminished, it's there enough to be nagging.  I'd recommend sticking with DirectX for the time being.  I'm pretty sure that Spacefiddle is correct and that Mantle isn't ready yet.  I'm hoping that a driver update come March-April will help with that.  I'm not holding my breath, but we'll see.  :)

So after pushing ahead another fifteen hours or so, I've been getting party banter only after a fight when speaking to whoever's around to thank you for handling their issue. Will get one rando exchange. This happens every 5-7 hours, I guess.

Also, one party member is always at half life when we arrive at a camp in a new geographic location??? So. Really no word on any of this, huh? I'm on Xbox One so there's no modding or futzing about I can do, either. Guess I'll go collect some more Elfroot. Effing bullcuss elfroot.

So how many folks here are unable to complete the "Under her Skin" quest given by Leliana?

You know, where you travel to Val Royeaux to enter the house and it loads, then just as the cut-scene is about to kick off, the game crashes back to Home.

I'm playing on XBox1.

I already posted on two different threads of the same issue the following (just gonna copy/paste it here).

It's the latest patch - (Patch 4) - that is causing this; it's the only logical explanation.

I have done the quest before on a different character and before the patch (around xmas time actually) and I did not have any issues.

Now with the new patch and from what I saw on the technical forum, a ton of other folks are reporting the same issue and all the reports were posted this month of February, just  after the release of the latest patch.

There is no quick fix or anything that can be done from what I can see and I have tried all sorts of things: Reboot the Xbox1 and clear persistent storage, changing the resolution (because I thought it was maybe an issue with the cut-scene that tries to kick-off just before the game crashes back to Home), loading a different saved game (and I don't overwrite a game, each saved game is a fresh saved game), going to Val Royeaux alone without any companions.

The only suggestion I have at the moment is not to side with the Templars, but with the mages instead, in order to get Cullen's quest.

That sucks for those who would like to side with the Templars, but what else can you do?

"Under her Skin" is tied in with the main quest-line from what I read (I haven't beaten the game yet lol) and without completing it, well...your stuck I suppose.

Here is to hoping that Bioware is going to address this issue in their next patch, whenever that may be (hopefully in a few weeks).

I ask that people try to not make this a general discussion thread.  Reading past discussions over things like Duke Nukem Forever and game development time and whatnot makes the thread unnecessarily larger and slows down my ability to read and collate the actual issues.

Thank you.

Hi Allan,

Thanks for trying to keep things on track.  It's hard to keep folks focused when they come to check for official replies or updates, and there aren't any.  The conversation tends to meander a bit; it's probably unavoidable.  You have a bunch of people in one place hoping for news, and then they're all standing around together and naturally start chatting about things.

I think it might help if someone came in with an update every few days, or even just to say "Hi!  Thanks for being patient!"  I'm sure that would keep (most) folks on track, and reinforce the idea that posting useful info here will help everyone.  Help more than Duke Nukem ;).

Even once a week would make a difference; an update, or just the "Hi!".  It gets disheartening when it seems like we only see reminders about the tone of posts, and staying on-topic.  I know everyone's busy - believe me, I know, I'm up to my ears at work with a couple of large projects - but I still try to find the time to reach out to clients and touch base, even if I have no new information on our status.  Minimally, once a week, for long-term projects.  It doesn't take up much of my time, even on busy days, to send an email to a few clients and reassure them that they haven't fallen off the radar.  What do you think?  Would every few days be doable?  Maybe midweek and end of week, where you might have a better idea of how things are going?

Thanks!

You know Allan... What you consider "Not an Actual Issue" seems to be a big issue the the buyers of your game. Maybe you should start listening to the people that buy the games that allow you to work on actual issues. Bring back the dupe.

Well, to be quite honest, I don't expect them to bring back the dupe "exploit".

I'd rather see a vendor in Skyhold that sells materials if you ever run out of them. And perhaps make it scale by level. Meaning people don't have overpowered gear, and can still play the game as BioWare intended.

That won't happen either given that you can't sell mats now.

I am on PC, patch 4, and I can sell crafting mats just fine, even the ones I duped.

I'm on the ps4 and I can also sell mats. Been playing some since I realized I got banter in the Western approach, even if it was an hour between banter.

I'm not sure if this stuff was happening before the patch, but I've never encountered it. I'm getting slow down/slow motion in fights. I'm also getting people disappearing from time to time, though reloading seems to help. Also getting delayed sound when zoning. I know people have reported these issues, but wasn't certain if it was pc people who had patch 3. I've never had these issues and it only started after the patch, but maybe I just got lucky.

EDIT: On the bright side, Solas' quest (What Lies Dormant) is triggering for me.

Never used the exploit and don't care that it's gone, but there are some real problems that need to be fixed and that's where their effort should be directed.

Killing the dupe glitch was quite clearly a big "FU now STFU!" from EAware.

(edit) It was petty and spiteful.

And I don't care how they "intended" it to be played, I paid my money and I expect to play an Rpg the way I intend to play it.

That's what the "role" in role-playing is all about.

So you think it was a type of punishment?
Man I sure hope not but with the level of discontent they seem to have for their fans of late I wouldn't put it past them.
It's an epic troll on their behalf and I'm starting to wonder if they pull the best posts over the removal and put them in a weekly comic relief newsletter

So I made a new character the other day and I chose Rogue (archer) as class. However, the tarot card on my loading screen shows a dual wielding rogue. Is this a recent bug introduced by this patch, or has this been going on longer and I never noticed until now? :P

It's not a super big deal though, because I still start as an archer in the game itself, but I was just wondering. ;)

For those who don't know, Allan had jaw surgery earlier this week and is taking six weeks off work while he recovers. With him out of the office, I wouldn't expect any significant communication from Bioware outside of patch notes.
