This is my first post here, and its to complain.  I am very upset with patch 3 & 4 on the PC.  This is a PC, why am I forced to update?  Why can't I wipe my install and apply just up to Patch 2?

My first playthrough was mostly on patch 2 and for the most part was extremely playable and lots of fun!  Now I am starting a new character but on the forced upgrade.  A few items that worked before are now glitched.  The biggest problems I hit are the banter is very much broken, the crafting item duplicator is broken, and something is off with the mouse controls.  It is a very quiet game now without any banter, to the point its not much fun to play.  The crafter glitch is frustrating, as now I have to grind much more to make the items I want, where as before I was able to bounce around map areas while enjoying some upgrades.  The mouse is now weird, in that its hard to loot items off the ground, the mouse has to be in just the right spot for it to work.  Its also throwing off combat a bit.

This is why I game on PC and not consoles, to play the story as told by the maker and yet to enjoy the world as a bit customized by myself.  I dont understand why on a PC I am forced to upgrade, and why I can't roll back patches.

Its a shame, as I love the DAI story and how it integrated back into DAO and DA2.  I just re-finished the base DAO and DA2 stories and was about to continue my saga with another run through DAI.  Oh well :(

Update: I just did a full download and re-install, hoping that it would install the shipped "patch zero" version then I could stop any updates.  This did not work, a full download brings in the latest version of DAI.  So if you have a stable running game, make a backup of the directory!!

Maybe the banter isn't a priority because there are people that have much larger problems, like white fog they can't see through and texture flickering all over the place in SLI.

Neither of which were addressed in any patches to date either.

Edit: i should add, I would bet that all of the above is slated for Patch 5.  I'd also be fine if that means Patch 5 is a little later, rather than sooner.  I'd also be cool if they end up being able to do some much quicker things and releasing THOSE fixes as patch 5, while continuing to work on the issues you mention.

If the real, solid, stable fixes for fog and flicker would hold up a lot of other fixes they could get out sooner, then by all means release a patch for those solved issues while the team keeps working on the big ones.

Yeah, 'cause those things were fixed instead...  :D

I see that you are following the Creative Assembly model for game releases.  Release a beta and wait for a year of patches before its fixed.  In the future I will treat you like I do CA and not buy the game for a year after release.  Works for me.

Using the player base as beta testers and making them pay for it is now common practice in the gaming industry. I miss the good ole' days when games were in a finished state upon release. Sure they still had bugs, but most of the quality titles were 99% bug free and 100% free of game breaking bugs. The number of problems with this game in it's current state is just downright pitiful. And the latest patch created more problems than it fixed. I had occasional crashes before. Now I'm lucky if I can play for 15 minutes without it crashing to desktop or freezing my computer completely. I even waited until mid-December before buying this game, knowing there would be bugs to fix upon release. Here we are 3 months after release, and the game is still in what I would consider a beta test.

I know I sound like I'm ranting, and I guess I am, but I do want to give credit where due. I'm not trying to hop on the Bioware hate train. In fact, I applaud Bioware for taking a phenomenal genre of games pioneered by Origin Systems to the mainstream public. Wing Commander 3 is one of my all-time favorite games. To see that genre perfected in KOTOR, DAO and ME1 & 2 was a wonderful thing. I understand that it takes a tremendous amount of time and resources to create games on this scale. But a word of advice; a game of this scale borders on MMORPG, do what MMO devs do, and have a 6 month (or longer in some cases) public beta test before releasing the game and get all these silly (yet game breaking in some cases) bugs fixed. You have a tremendous following that would gladly participate in beta test if it means when we finally pay for it, the game is DONE! It's unacceptable to pay $60 for a game that isn't finished. Imagine if Hollywood started releasing screener versions of films in theaters, charged admission, and then waited for fan feedback to release the final version. That's pretty much what this amounts to.

In conclusion, DAI is strike two for Bioware. Strike one was ME3; which is a solid game, but paled in comparison to ME2 for many reasons which you can see on any number of YouTube videos. But after they wow'd me with KOTOR, ME1 & 2 and DAO, ME3 was a let down. I will likely buy ME4 upon release (waiting until after the first patch, of course). But if that game is released in a state like this and/or disappoints me as bad as ME3, that's strike three. I'm tired of developers abusing their fans by releasing games that aren't finished. Even Blizzard did this with Diablo 3, and Blizzard is notorious for not releasing a game until its DONE. Pull this crap with ME4, and you will never see another dime of my money.

Hi Jerome.  Welcome to the party.  Sorry you have experienced the same frustration that brought a lot of us here.

The best thing that can happen at this point is that consumers withhold their cash from pre-orders and "collector's editions" until we're treated less like cost-recouping lab rats, and more like valued customers.  It's the only thing that's going to make a dent.  As long as the cash flow remains high, why would they change anything?  EA execs don't come read these boards.  They just pocket your money.

Hold the line, don't give in to weakness, and stick to any decisions you make about not buying the New Shiny until you do some reading and confirm, beyond the laughable game industry media, that things are working as advertised.  It'll still be the same game if you wait a few months, or 6 months, or a year.  Or more likely a much better one.

I didn't pre-order, I waited a couple months after release, I didn't get a CE.  All lessons I learned from EA.  But they still got me this time, and so I must take it up another notch and commit to not buying at all until I know for certain that I'm not being used as a beta tester again.

@Jerome, why the hell should there be a beta test for a SP game? Should we pay for the game first in order to beta test it before release? Which btw would sound awfully like another disease that plagues the video game industry these days, i.e. early access. Or the game in its beta state would be available for free, so anyone can finish it and have no incentive to actually buy it after release and play it again? This is something for the QA and paid testers, not for the customers. Open beta tests in MMOs are supposed to test the stability of the servers, stress test the hell out of them, you don't need such a thing in a SP game (unless you are a moron releasing the game with always online DRM). This game needed and still needs more paid testers and more programmers to patch the game.

@spacefiddle, especially if the CE will be such a mess as the one for DAI :D Have you seen it? Things made out of the cheapest materials possible, scattered all over the box, often broken, etc. Tarrot cards, map, notebook were pretty cool though, but the rest was rubbish. The worst thing is, had they sold it in my country, I probably would have bought it, because I had such high expectations for the game and was really looking forward to playing it. But after reading the CE thread here on BSN I am glad I dodged that bullet.

So this thing is called a 'patch'. Still no fix for broken-glued male elf arms. It is 11th week after the game release and it suffers from the same bugs as it suffered day 1.

I had this happen to me very badly for one day and then it went away.  Can't remember if it was before or after Patch 4.  Basically the game window would just close without any warning or error messages.  In the end I think it was an app like Afterburner which I usually had on to monitor my temps and FPS, i turned all of those off and haven't experienced a CTD over the weekend.

I don't have anything like that installed.

It's a brand new PC and is very much bare bones on the Software front

I really don't understand how the banter problem isn't more of a priority...really you say patch 4 is focused on MP key drop issue and not ****** banter which is essential to why 95% of people bought your game? No one gives a **** about multiplayer...fix the singleplayer jesus christ.

I just truly at this point don't understand how it's humanly possible to be this unresponsive to a problem with an essential aspect of your game...the new patch didn't fix anything for most people and i guess that's just fine....let's talk about key drop issues.

It's like after telling us they fixed the banter issues in the new patch they decided to forget they even said that so they don't have to talk about it still not functioning at all. Don't say you solved something and then just throw your hands in the air like "who gives a ****" when your fix doesn't actually do anything and move on to the next problem.

"banter which is essential to why 95% of people bought your game?"

No. No one (except for you maybe) bought the game purely for the banter - that would be incredibly silly. There is MUCH more to the game than party banter.

I admit however, (for those experiencing it) party banter is a nice little touch to the game and it is surely annoying not hearing much of it, but it is not even close to being an actual selling point or a game breaking bug for that matter.

You are trying to manipulate the devs with this silly argument. It aint gonna fly, yo!

According to Bioware, they can't even replicate the bug! So from a technical standpoint, it does not exist. And thus, it is not on their bug list.

And FYI, they did make changes to the banter frequency and they did explain how it works.

I'm not dismissing your claims of missing banter, I am questioning your claim of it being 95% reason for people buying the game. A little too dramatic, I'd say.

The reason you are forced to update your game with the official patches makes complete sense.

Aside from the patches being less than perfect and often introducing new bugs, it is Bioware's intention to resolve game breaking bugs, providing a better gaming experience and reducing support tickets.

It is how the software business works - if you want support for your product, you need to apply the developer's patches.

Bioware is rolling out their patches automatically for your convenience and well as their own.

A much more streamlines process than posting updates on their support site and having to rely on people to download and install it themselves.

You may not agree with this and that is OK. It really makes no difference at the end of the day.

The 95% comment may have been an exaggeration, but it is true that banter is an integral part of the franchise. It is just as big a way of telling stories( in a story driven game) as regular quest giving and turning in. And when it's missing, you  feel incredibly detached from the most important characters in the game. And yes, while it may not be ruining the game mechanically, as in functioning combat or crashes, it does in it's own way. For all it's criticism DA2 was brilliant when it came to interactions. You could ignore the repetitive maps because everything was dripping with character. Inquisition is much the same, but to the other extreme, the world is so big and open that exploring it is a treat on its own. But you do so in complete silence. And that sours the experience to no end. I am more inclined to agree with DAOnut here. :|

Use the F button instead for looting and object interaction, it will make it less frustrating

I thought I made it very clear why there needs to be a beta test, but I will attempt to clarify. Given the state that so many SP games are released in these days, there's obviously a need for something to change. The scope of the game coupled with their apparent lack of interest in doing enough in-house testing to fix all these major issues. Also, I said public beta, not open. There's a difference. That being use of the public, not just anyone who wants to play. There are ways to implement beta tests to ensure a wide variety of system configurations for PC as well as testing for consoles. You are correct, an open beta is primarily to test server stability. But that's not what I'm talking about. A closed beta whereby you must signup and are selected to participate is implemented to test much more than just server stability on MMOs. That is the type of beta that is needed here if developers are unwilling to invest into in-house testing and continue to release games with these types of problems. I hope I have adequately clarified myself.

Better don't word it this way or Mister Schumacher will appear and say 'we won't have patch notes discussion' and from that moment, every moderator will repeat it as closing words.

It would be quite funny if they were going to release elvhen focused DLC while the male elvhes have broken-glued arms.

So how is the banter doing these days? Still 'fixed' in a hitman sense?

I know, it was more of an 'inside joke'. Still, we should at least write 'woah, crafted shields patched, good job BioWare'. I wonder, do they have 3 weeks long valentines in Canada too? Because extended winter holidays were rather great. Totally deserved!

Maybe one day I will be able to enjoy this game, after someone set elvhen arms properly. For now 'yay, Varric boots patched'

For something like a patch, a more verbose explanation is needed. Patch notes are vital. I don't know why you changed the system cause I do not think I heard anyone say they were intimidated.

What is happening to you guys?

Bye bye my beloved Duplication-glitch.. T^T My enthusiasm for crafting armors and weapons will die with you... I'll put off installing the next patches for consoles, for as long as possible because of this. : P I've had no major issues with the game, so I'll happily not download them just to keep this tiny joy of mine alive. :D

Anyone else finding the music to be really loud post Patch 4? I have it set to 50% and dialogue set to 100% and it still seems to drown out the dialogue a lot of the time. Didn't have an issue with Patch 2.

Well, after reading the seven pages of this thread, I've reached a conclusion: I miss the good old days when patches were downloadable separated files that you downloaded and executed yourself, applying only the ones that you wanted.

I also miss the days when we used to name "patch" only a file that would improve or fix your game.

And, last but not least, I miss the days when games used to be released more carefully.

I mean, we now have a multi-billionaire industry of gaming and the state of newly released games are getting worse and worse. It makes no sense at all.

People need to learn what a game is suposed to be. Lots of gamers here on this forum that have not the slightest common sense about consumer rights or what a RPG is and why people likes them. Banter not important? What do you play then, a button smashing game? I'm here for the story bro, and I would love to have the story along with a good gameplay mechanism. DA:O had that, why are BW reinventing the wheels with those crappy changes in DA:2 and now this pathetic excuse of a tactical cam in DA:I? I really can't understand what the problem with the developers messing up a perfect gameplay just to change it and say they created something new. You have created something WORSE. Waaaaay WORSE. That's what you did.

@Jay C

Well, it is quite easy, Skyrim sold like a gazillion of copies and way way more than DAO+DA2 combined, why make an expensive RPG game for a certain audience when you can make a game for much bigger audience? However it is a question if BW themselves wanted to go that route or if it was ordered to them by EA.

Also it makes perfect sense why these megacorporations are acting this way. More money for less effort. Just look at CoD for example, Activision can just copy paste their game mechanics and assets as long as they want and fanboys will still buy that piece of crap by millions each year.

Nevertheless, it is quite sad and in the case of DAI it has pissed me off the most so far. I'd like to believe some AAA developers still care at least a bit (I hope BW still care), but they have to obey their corporate leadership.
