I know that you can choose auto leveling for your companions, but do you need to upgrade their armor and weapons?

I just want to focus on my main character and not have to worry about my companions attributes, skills or gear. I'm pretty sure auto leveling will take care of the attributes and skills aspect, but what about their gear (like weapons, armor, potions, etc.)?

 

I have one more question: Is there a way to switch between weapons without having to pause the game and go to the inventory?

You change and upgrade equipment for all manually (there's no automatic leveling of equipment).

 

You can't change weapons outside of the inventory that I've noticed.

Thanks for the answers mate. I have one more question if you would be so kind? 1) Do you have to replenish your companions health potions?

It depends. Some health potions will replenish automatically when you travel to a camp. Others you have to use crafting components at came or at your home base.
