As the title says, I am wondering if there is a way to customize the default appearance of your journal when you hit J?

 

Such as the background or the interface buttons? If so, how to?

That sounds like an interesting idea. I would speculate that you'll need to override the XML files used to display the Journal. You could look at some of the GUI modifications and see how it was done for other components of the GUI. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

If you open up your nwn2 install directory there's a UI folder, you have to poke around a bit but the file you want is journal.xml. Copy it in to your override folder in My Documents/Neverwinter Nights 2/Override and you can make changes with a text editor. If you want to edit any of the images they can also be found in the UI folder in a different section, just copy them to your override and change them with a program like photoshop.

 

One helpful tip is that if you copy all the relevant files to override, set up an Idle Expire Time so that in game all you have to do is close and reopen the journal to see your changes and whether they worked. If the journal doesn't open you messed up and broke the XML format.

For mine, I used "idesc_paper_bg.tga" as the background for the journal.
