So I just dusted off my old Sega Saturn and started playing Dragon Force again. Man that was a great game.

Yup. Linked to a few tracks from it in the video game music thread on occasion. Played the hell out of it back in the day. Finished it more times than I can count with everyone except Gongos. Junon, Reinhart, and Goldark remain my favorite arcs. I liked Teiris the least. Felt too much like easy mode. Great story, with great characters, and lovely music. One of the best games Working Designs translated. Their trademark silliness enhanced it too, instead of taking away from it.

A shame the sequel never made it over here. By the time I realized there was one, I couldn't find an import copy. Ah well, I heard it wasn't nearly as good as the original anyway.

Man I miss Working Designs.  Albert Odyssey, both Lunar games, Dragon Force, Growlancer Generations.  They were the best.  But Dragon Force was the best of their stuff I agree.

Lunar and Lunar: Eternal Blue had a big impact on me back then. First time I met people online with similar interests was among folks at LunarNET in the late 90s. For awhile I also wrote for RPGFan, but I won't reveal in what capacity since I think all traces of my time there are gone now and I rather keep that chapter of my life closed. Point is, Working Designs had a huge impact on my interests in RPGs. If Final Fantasy was what was got me into the genre, the games Working Designs translated are what made it a passion. Except Vay. I *despised* Vay. It's right up there with Beyond the Beyond on my list of most hated RPGs ever. :P

Albert Odyssey was great game. A bit too short, but I really enjoyed it. Very cute too. :) Sadly missed out on Growlancer and Arc the Lad. Although I played through the original Japanese version of the latter.

Alongside Dragon Force on Saturn, I also loved Magic Knight Rayearth. That game was one of the reasons I bought a Saturn. Took *forever* for it to release. >.< Totally worth it though. By far the best manga to game translation I ever played. Lots of nice little touches in it too.

Man, now I'm feeling wistful. At this rate I may break out my Sega Saturn too. XD

From what I've seen/experienced, pretty cool, the Saturn had a lot of interesting games. Dragon Force, Radiant Silvergun, Guardian Heroes, etc.

Haha, I couldn't stand Beyond the Beyond either, whenever I think of JRPGs gone wrong that's the game that comes to mind. Lunar was plenty fun although I only played Silver Star Story instead of Eternal Blue.

I thought this was pretty cool to hear about all them.

I keenly remember how frustrating it was to deal with Samson in BtB. :/ First time he appears he's this awesome warrior. Then he gets cursed and you need to carry him for an eternity. Once you break his curse, everyone else has caught up and he's no longer awesome. >.<

I don't even remember the story of BtB anymore. All I can recall are vague bits of recruiting Tont and fighting Shutat at the end. And then an ending that in no way made up for everything before it. Horrible. -_- I'm trying to block out how horrible its combat was and utterly failing. Le sigh.

Eternal Blue wasn't as good as Silver Star Story in some ways, but in others it was so much better. I'm hesitant to go into spoilers, but it had some nice surprises for fans of the first game. Despite being set long after SSS it felt like a more direct sequel than some actual sequels do today.
