He wanted war.
It may just be a different flavour of stupidity (or a worse one), but he solely did that so Templars had a definite reason to openly attack Mages, so they would be forced to respond in kind. Kirkwall was the best possible place for his plan.
The most terrible crime Anders commited -besides the murders of a bunch of assumingly innocent members of the Chantry- was to force his fellow mages into a deadly struggle, because he himself declared it certain that change couldn't come any other way.

Very much this.
He was just a random comic relief dandy in DAA; like we've had them to the dozens in RPGs. In DA2, they at least kinda turned him into the Thedosian Che Guevara (of whom many also don't understand the numerous violent war crimes he commited).

Anders I feel was the spark that makes a leaky gaspipe explode. There were npc's in the ferelden circle talking about how a circle politics group wanted circles to split from the Chantry, so it didn't start with Anders directly. He just shoved everyone over the fine line in the sand, rather forcefully.

I like discussions. I feel like we can discuss almost anything in DQ without feeling besieged by nasty internet trolls.
Maybe this will lighten the mood. I was totally thinking about this when I watched that John Legend video from earlier in the thread. ![]()

So can I clumsily raise a topic?
It hit me today, how it is incredbile what BioWare has done with Anders....<snip>...
I (the player) liked how Anders was wrote a lot, and other that the voiceover, DAII Anders had way more depth than Anders in Awakening. I've said it in other threads, the only character in DA2 that I found "weak" in her motivations was Merrill (from a character's writing standpoint). Now from my character's perspective, as the story progresses my Hawke perceived that Anders was less and less "himself" and more and more "Justice/Vengeance". When Anders blown Kirkwall's Chantry, regardless of what Anders said, according to my Hawke's understanding, it wasn't really Anders, but "Justice/Vengeance" the culprit. What my Hawke wanted was NO war (without metagaming) to begin with, and Hawke believed that he had enough leverage to prevent it (he loves deeply Bethany, so he also had personal reasons at stake). If he allowed Anders to live, any leverage he could have to mediate on an eventually peaceful resolution of the conflict could have been lost.

I love DA2's ending, the entire fight. One of my favourite stories is if Hawke is a mage, Carver a Templar and Hawke sides with the Templars. Both Carver and Cullen stand between Meredith and the Champion in that case, makes me get all warm and fuzzy inside haha. I always play a female Hawke, never played a male Hawke, and often pick mage. I also do not think i've even once let Anders walk away alive after he blows the Chantry up.

- DW rogue femHawke, Bethany a Circle mage, Hawke sides with mages, Anders romanced and spared
- DW rogue femHawke, Bethany dies in the Deep Roads, Hawke sides with mages, Anders romanced and spared
- DW rogue femHawke, Bethany a Circle mage, side with _?_, Anders _?_ (Fenris romanced)
The suspense is killing me.

Someone likes to romance Anders
, I only had one lady hawke mage romance him, and he wasn't spared in the end.. I always felt bad about that playthrough.
All my others romanced Fenris, with a nice mix between siding with Templars or mages and Carver either dead, grey warden or Templar. Since I usually play mages Carver was the sibling who survived Lothering, I think one playthrough had Bethany and she died in the deep roads, I played a DW rogue that time.

Is it possible to side with mages without killing Fenris in the end? I ended up enjoying the friendmance a lot more than I anticipated. ![]()
And I suppose I'm missing out on a whole character (Carver) because I've never played a mage Hawke. Hmm.

Yes it is possible to have fenris remain with you when choosing to side with Mages. Just have his friendship high and finish his personal quests. If your romanced and/or a close friend then he follows you.
I personally found playing a mage Hawke led to some interesting stuff, mainly in dialogue because of the whole mage vs templar thing. I recommend trying a mage playthrough once to experience it.

Well, I am relieved to hear that about Fenris. As far as doing a mage playthrough, any excuse to play more DA2 sounds good to me.

Anders. I was so sick of that kid in Awakening. "Oh poor mages, woe is me. I think I'm so funny!" Annoying twerp.
I don't want to Monday. Let me stay home and sleep!

my Hawke looks weird! Meaning not the sort of look I'm used to creating. Might try and make an Inquisitor like her later too.

Let me guess, you're happy to kill him in DA2?
It's Monday? .. it is monday, where did the weekend go?

More than a little. It was the blowing up a chantry bit that brought out Mr Murder Knife. I was content to be annoyed with his stupid ass and then he did that.
Not enough sleep. Cabot, drink.
