You are "writing it" most splendidly as per usual, wonderful.

And yes, I agree with that 100% (see how this thread is different from all the others?!), and very well put, too. There's a difference between standing by your ideals or forcing them onto others - or as in Anders' case, even onto your own.

The thing that gripes me with the community's Anders hatred is, however, that the general air of many tells me they want the character to not exist that way, or be more "good", or less emotionally stressful and whatnot. That's like saying "I hate Saren, cause he works with the Reapers."

Simple people want the good guy and the bad guy. They don't want the complex guy because it requires a level of thought.

See, that's where I adamantly disagree.

Sometimes violence is very necessary for self-defense. It must never be necessary to make a point, any such that isn't "violence".

Sometimes the opressed must oppose their opression with violence, but acutely if ever. What Anders did was making a point by demonstrating violence, and that can never lead to a positive outcome. I am very glad they made it impossible to perfectly resolve the Circle question perfectly peacefully in DAI because of this prerequisite.

I don't think its a nice answer , but when ya have no choice . What others way do you have ? lie down and die?

What Anders did and the way I saw it , was that he made sure the fate of mage must be changed and he started a war that this whole time everyone was tip toeing around . Its nice to have ideals about peace and compromises , but when its the same faction that keep losing peoples over and over..enough is enough .

what I didnt like , is how in DAI..they never revealed what Justinia plan was . I think it wouldve given the game more depth and made that whole herald bullshit easier to swallow....then leaving us in the dark like this .

If I may ,

You have exremist who...have their life separated from their beliefs . And want to controle the world in a certain way cose X and Y should be better and they know better .

And you have 'extremist' who actually have a stake in saying X and Y should be like this . In the case you mentioned *fiona and anders and so on* ...it is very easy to call them extremist when you are not part of the equation they are in . Its easy to say 'But the consequences!!!' ...

Trust me , when it is YOUR rights and YOUR life thats being taken away , the 'extremist' to a certain point can become necessary and the only way out . Cose as you know , neither the chantry or the Templar would let the mage go based on 'fear' and 'Maker doctrine' ...

And I said , it isn't about speaking for others . But if only Anders for exemple wanted a way out..nothing will ever change . He will live a miserable life being Hunted..while many mages won't speak out , for fear and what may happen . Sometimes violence is necessary..and the only things those who opress understand .

Oh, I certainly can't claim that I can be a part of equation concerning Mages vs Templars.
And I do understand people who choosing the "violence is necessary" approach. It's effective.

But I strongly believe that if you don't want to see another way out, you won't see it.
On a different scale, but as example, we can look at scene with Leliana in Haven (DAI) about a traitor. Kill him is consistent decision, but not the only one.

And once again, who decide what necessity is?
And "Its easy to say 'But the consequences!!!'", sorry, I mean no offence, but in my opinion it easier to say "Damn the consequences, I want it!".

All stated above is IMO and not about me been right and everyone with different opinion being wrong.
I just don't want anyone one to speak for me. I'll voice my opinion myself and if I don't have guts to do so then my opinion don't worth anything.

Soon-to-be drinking games like that is the reason we're here for, after all!

As Monty Python said, "Not everything has an upside, but everything has a funny side."

I wish I could buy you a real drink, Dieb.

For whatever it's worth, you have my respect.

And I like Anders as character, I wish there were more like him (not in a matter of blowing Chantry with innocent, of course), I just have "problems" with how he (or maybe, it's more right to say, Vengeance) chose to act.

He was a Grey Warden. Suck it up for one day, use that title as a way to make a statement. Point out how mages are not the monsters people think them to be, and unlike other mages, he can make people listen, because he is a Grey Warden.

He spared a lot of time for the protagonist. It would take an hour to kill the priestess and the templars with daggers.

In general about violence as a mean to solve things, ethical or not, it's not effective, thus shouldn't be used.

Sugar, I'll pay for all your drinks. ;)

Anyway, how was your day?

As a person who do not allow anyone to buy her drinks in RL, I greatly approve :D

My day... monday [disgusted noise]. I'm overreacting a little, but it feels strangely good to grumble about mondays. B)

Simple people want the good guy and the bad guy. They don't want the complex guy because it requires a level of thought.

Don't break my immersion! :D

I'm simple person..

...which is why I'm probably attracted to complex people. Oh, my poor heart.

Right after the Blight it might work, 10 years later .. unlikely. And there were templars with the paranoid commander saying the opposite. And the priestess looking at people dying and doing nothing.

He left by his own choice, but you never stop being a Grey Warden (there was that one exception) so even if he doesn't go by that title anymore, he is still one.

As far as I can try to "lay out" anything concerning game world, I think they already started doing something promising: saving runaway mages, eliminating crazed with power templars.. it would take slower, but, in my opinion, they would've been there eventually.

But Anders chose to kill Elthina to make a statement, to manifest a war for freedom.
I would understand it better if he tried to blow up Gallows with templars.

He was a Grey Warden. Suck it up for one day, use that title as a way to make a statement. Point out how mages are not the monsters people think them to be, and unlike other mages, he can make people listen, because he is a Grey Warden.

Or this.

It's a matter of choices.

I wouldn't tried to kill the priestess. My aim would had been Meredith.

Elthina was Meredith's superior, she let the templars to act without restraints. The one time, when a priest (almost) was brought to justice was when captain of the city guard and an armed squad demanded it.

Edit. Night, Dame.

I finished my third playthrough of DA2. I sided with Orsino, spared Blondie, and Fenris stayed (whew). Then, because apparently one end game wasn't enough, I fought Corypheus again using my OP gear from JoH just for grins.
