Guten Morgen, DrinkQuisitors.  I have a special (and probably boring for most of you) Purple Martin update post.  Since it will be boring for most of you, the rest of it is going in spoilers.

Not sure if any will remember, but I am what is called Purple Martin landlord.  I maintain twelves gourds on a rack for these lovely birdies, who are in the swallow family and related to the barn/tree/cave/etc swallows, and more distantly related to swifts such as chimney swifts.  This year, all twelves gourds (and freakishly a bluebird gourd, which I will explain later) were occupied, but only eleven of the nesting couples (PLUS those weirdos in the bluebird gourd) laid eggs.  Total chick count that survived to hatching and will/should fledge is 57.  Lost a couple of eggs that didn't hatch, and one chick that didn't survive the first few days after hatching, but still a decent year.

 

The bluebird gourd:  The hole for bluebird gourd is too small for martins to use, so imagine my shock when mowing one day and going past the bluebird gourd and two martins dart out of it.  Not to mention that martin gourds are usually 12-16 feet in the air and the bluebird gourd is only about 5 feet off the ground.  What had apparently happened is really strong thunderstorms had recently torn the lid right off the side access port (it was old and cracked, but I thought it would last one more year) allowing the martins access.  Still shocked, though, given they don't nest that low to the ground.  Anyway, custom cut an entrance for them out of another lid to at least provide -some- protection for them from the elements while still giving them a place to perch on the gourd.

 

So anyway, here is some video I shot last night.  I was really hoping to catch some of the first fledgers doing their silly flying they do when they first emerge, but they didn't give me any.  IN fact, most of the Martins were still off flying high catching insects.  In all, including the bluebird gourd, I have 26 adult martins and 57 young in various stages of development, the oldest having fledged just yesterday.  They will -all- be gone by early August, heading back to Brazil for the winter, to return around March of next year.

That's awesome Beren! seems to be a decent hatching count, I used to check on willy wag-tail nests in a local protected area, years ago when i lived in a smaller country outback town. There's a pair of them near my current house. I think they nest down by the creek.

You haven't lived until you've been divebombed by a tiny bird for getting too close to it's nest. These little, tiny, chubby dancing birds are feisty. He got me good on the back of the head with beak and claw, scary things.

The past 4 generations of my family (mother's side) have been bird watchers and bird enthusiasts. There's a family joke about it being genetic. My daughter loves birds but I think that's a kid thing.

"The Idiot" and "Crimes & Punishments" are among my favourite books of all time. I'm not really into Tolstoi and Nabokov as much, if I'm honest, however - of those that I've attempted to read. See my first favourite of Dostojevski for the why.

Way too kind, buddy. It's what I am here for, anyways. I wouldn't be a true gentleman if I would not at least try to charm a true dame (seriously, I have to stop that)

 

I really like that you are as passionate about this as you are. I read through the whole thing, and while I don't understand many of these things, it is also hardly necessary to understand its importance. Also, I draw solar-panel-like joy from someone speaking about their favourite things; and yours is worth pursuing, too.
