The part where he is still waving a tiny stick seemingly without rhyme or reason like a dink. Oh, i know the importance of the conductors role. It takes skill, a profound understanding of the music played and a heapload of stamina. Just not the kind of "grrr manly man" bulldrek strenght the original quote implies.
It may seem that way to you. And I never got the 'grrr manly man' vibe from the original quote. Certainly we live in a day where the role of Conductor is not as prestigious as it once was.

"The position of the conductor has long been the bastion of manly power with mental images of physical and mental strenght attatched to it along with insurmountable masculinity."

Considering that the entire quote is about perception and image, I'd say how it seems to me is kinda important. The point here being that somewhere out there are people that think that being a male conductor makes them some kind of hot-shot alpha males.
I'm pointing out the ridiculousness of the notion. Anyone coming to the male wang-waving contest armed with just a conductors baton is going to find out he's woefully inadequate. That's all I really have to say about that.
Oh, and the original article was about how classical orchestras in Europe have become bastions of Neanderthal level sexism using the treatment of female conductors as an example.

That sentence was directed at the part I bolded in your quote: 'The part where he is still waving a tiny stick seemingly without rhyme or reason like a dink'
To you it maybe without rhyme or reason, but not to someone who is musically trained. Can't help it I've been in the orchestra and choir that had a conductor so we didn't just create sound and fury. I don't give a **** about the rest.

I think that at the end would depend of the context, possibly if you compare a Male Conductor (of classical music) to a male harp (the strings instrument, not the harmonica) player (a role that seem to be held more commonly by women for some odd reasons) then yes, the violent movements and expressions that a passionate conductor uses to ask the orchestra to carry a specific emphasis on a classical piece can be seen as "manly", however if you toss the same male conductor in a US country (the music, not the region) setting, he would not look that "manly" to the rest of the crowd there.
In some testosterone fueled settings, sophistication is likened to lack of physical strength. I have the perception that in Europe, it is different than the US (or other countries for that matter).
