In regards to cleaning up my Keep -and to start actually using it- I whipped up this summary of Kelevra's life. Thoughts? (And yes, it's very bulletin like, because of the limit)

Kelevra is a seasoned adventurer and reknown relic hunter.

Born into Free Marches nobility, he was sent to the university of Val Royeaux as a young man. He briefly studied history and archaeology there, until he cut ties with his family for unknown reasons, and swiftly left Orlais joining an excavation team led by his former professor. He went on to spend years at dig sites all over northern Thedas, retrieving ancient artifcats for various academic institutions; including both the Circle of Magi and the Magistrate of Minrathous.

Having made a reputation as a reliable adventurer rather than a mere scholar of history, his excursions became increasingly profitable, yet also dangerous & often illegal. Accordingly, Kelevra found himself working primarily for a rather dubious pool of clients, whose disinterest to handle the objects he recovered responsibly, soon started to wear on him.

 

During the last, fateful expedition to an ancient ritual site in the Hundred Pillars, greed once more got the upper hand over his education and better judgement. Short on time and determined to deliver as expected, Kelevra ordered the activation of an unkown arcane mechanism without sufficient inspection, resulting in a massive detonation that instantly killed his entire team; leaving the man devastated and without a right forearm.

Shortly after this tragedy, after several decades as an explorer and adventurer, he retired to the Frostback Mountains to live a quiet life off the land as a hunter & fisherman. Gossip between the few other mountainfolk indicates, the rediscovered ruins of the Temple of the Sacred Ashes is supposed to serve as the site of a great conclave between Mages and Templars - guaranteed to disturb his peace even in the most desolate of places.

I like it. Like you, i prefer it when characters are not exempt of the rules and lore of the world around them and the history of your quizzy is completely believable in this regard

 

I especially liked the 'cutting ties and getting the hell out of dodge (orlais) fast' bit. There's a story there

He didn't.

 

My "signature" skill is Hook & Tackle. I headcanon the apparatus necessary to make that thing even work as gameplay presents it, completely replaces his right arm from the elbow down. The right being his draw hand it works for combat, and only the right side of his face is also covered in scars (while it's not perfect, I did put some thought into this)

 

 

I like it. Like you, i prefer it when characters are not exempt of the rules and lore of the world around them and the history of your quizzy is completely believable in this regard

I honestly haven't thought that through entirely. I have some distant idea about his family making a political decision that upset him, and expected Kel to get involved more. One way or the other, he likes to not be associated with the Trevelyan name, and the preference is mutual.

 

While I enjoy being of "lower birth" for my character more, and would have liked it if we had been given the option to be a lot more uneasy about the constant mentioning of his lordship within the Inquisition; but given how many people liked their Cousland and how many actually liked Hawke, I understand why BioWare won't make the same mistake twice.

I just took from personal favourites such as Indiana Jones, Garrett (Thief), Batman and Snake Plissken; the apparatus was just a random idea to make the skill make sense & increase his scarred-veteran-ness further. I just love protagonists who compensate a complete lack of supernatural powers with training, brains and a crapton of gadgets. (hence H&T, Throwing Blades, Traps etc.)

 

Obviously it's not original, but I had no particular bearer in mind. That Merle guy sounds like someone he wouldn't get along with though, judging from his Wiki article!

Merle is certainly an...interesting guy ...he was coming around though...and then was shot by the Governor.  

 

You should also add bows to that list.    Which it is kind of funny back to my head canon for a bit that Kara knows how to hunt after spending so much time outdoors and with bows...but she did not really know how to use a bow to kill people.  I have an idea for a chapter in a story where Iron Bull pretty much owns Kara because of that point.  Taken, inspiration wise, from a scene in Glory...hold on maybe I can find it online.
